Remember the "they're just waiting for Toby's contract to expire in November?" talk?

Emmerich signed a multi-year contract extension in the summer of 2021, which has him well-positioned for leading the studio at Warner Bros. Discovery, the new entity that will result from AT&T spinning off WarnerMedia and merging it with Discovery in 2022.

(For now, the Discovery guard is largely in charge under CEO David Zaslav. Toby Emmerich, Casey Bloys and Channing Dungey, heads of Warner Bros Pictures, HBO and Warner Bros TV, respectively, have gotten votes of confidence.)

I bring this up just to reiterate that this is why y'all need to watch where you're getting news from. Because I've been seeing all these supposed rumors and "scoops" about how a Zaslav-backed restoration of the Snyderverse was totally happening behind the scenes for months now and that's why Zack Snyder had a Final Crisis comic in his photo or some producer posted something ominous on Vero, and that certainly doesn't seem true in light of all this. Hope can be a powerful thing but grifters love to prey on that for clout.

You also need to be aware that Emmerich and top execs also have agreements with Hollywood rags to run stories to their liking in exchange for "exclusive" stories about new movies etc . So put that into the mix and you really can't believe anything you read.

I mean c'mon "Emmerich has built a strong track record......blah blah blah" yeah right ! If that isn't the epitamie of a "puff piece" then I don't know what is.

In addition to that top execs in these publicly known situations, may also get positive feedback from their bosses before being fired in order for them to be able to get another job somewhere. There's no point publicly cutting them down as not good when you want to get rid of them. No one would hire them.

In addition to this the Discovery team need to keep some of the movie division in place to see how it all runs. So no rush to get rid of them yet. Hence the "For now".... title of that other piece.

So the argument can be shown in both directions.

I guess we'll really see where we stand early 2023, if his contract does go to end of 2022. If not before.

First thing: Zaslav has always been a wild card in this situation. For the pro-Snyderverse community he has offered the hope that we could see continuation of what Snyder had planned, more or less. But none of us truly has any idea how he views things, honestly. He might shake things up, or he might just adopt the good old boy club mentality and support Emmerich.

If Emmerich was a snake by getting his contract extended before the acquisition, and if Zaslav has very different plans, for all we know Zaslav might be keeping Emmerich around to basically humiliate him by having Emmerich dismantle whatever WB was planning and to pave the way for a major change of some sort. We need to wait and see. Hopefully there will be an announcement on Monday.

If he'd been bought out of his contract or had been terminated, I have to imagine that would've actually surfaced in any of the actual discussion about the regime change this week. Again, it could happen, but the only people I've seen still saying that are fan "news" outlets who desperately want him gone, but don't actually have any sort of actual intel.

Sure, sure, wildcard, I get. But that's not what I've witnessed from the movement the past few months. People I'd seen had been acting like it was a given that Zaslav was a huge fan of Zack Snyder's stuff and that coming onboard he would dispose of Emmerich, Hamada, and everyone else who stood in Zack's way. In this very thread we'd had multiple theories that the reason Flash was delayed was because Zaslav had ordered it to be reshot to accommodate the return of the Snyderverse, along with the other supposed hints I'd mentioned ("Zack tweeted a photo of Final Crisis! It's happening!" "I saw a website say Dwayne Johnson is fighting behind the scenes to restore the Snyderverse! Even though he's never brought it up in interviews or social media!")

I don't say any of this to be mean. I don't. But to reiterate a point I'd made previously, often the simple, obvious explanation is the one that's right. Could this all be smoke and mirrors with Zaslav preparing to do all that? Sure. But somehow I don't think so, because the same people I'd seen all over Twitter and Reddit saying this were the same ones who, just a week ago, were assuring everyone that Tobey Emmerich and Walter Hamada were DOA as soon as the merger happened. At a certain point it pays to be skeptical of what sourcers you're getting your news from.

There’s lots of folks assuming x, y, and z. In both directions, frankly. The fact is, none off us knows David Zaslav at all. We have no idea what he’s planning.

The hope I’ve allowed myself to entertain has come from Zack Snyder and Clay Staub’s numerous posts that seem to be encouraging hope! They’re cryptic presumably because Snyder and Staub would risk being sued if they just came out and shared whatever it is they might know, if in fact there have been private conversations, etc. It’s a basic trust that those posts are in good faith, i.e., they’re not doing it to string the fandom along and just to get attention, etc.

But obviously we won’t really know until we get something officially (perhaps via the trades) from WBD.

Robert Meyer Burnett does know the film industry. He weighs in on Toby Emmerich’s contract extension. It’s a very short clip.

It sounds to me like RMB is suggesting that Emmerich went ahead and sought the extension from his buddies above him in the WB hierarchy (board of directors?) in anticipation that WBD wound not give him that extension. It would make it that much more expensive to buy out his contract, etc. And if this is true I’m sure he will be heavily marginalized during the remainder of his time at WBD. Especially with all the Discovery execs taking over.

This is so true what RMB says. Emmerich and Sujihara have taken WB from a great studio to the end of the line where talent no longer wants to work. Point in case Nolan + Snyder + Affleck. Also interesting that this was the first and most important change which Zaszlav announced last year when the merger was announced. He clearly knows how WB used to be.

As many have said Emmerich simply bought himself some more time, and in the best case probably gets a golden parachute payout should Discovery choose to get rid of him early. I hope they make him sit it out and make him a lame duck within the company.

So now it's just a waiting game imo. If you were Zaslav, why would you keep the head of the studio who has been at the helm while it was driven into the ground and laughed at by the industry ? He's had his time, and failed.

Given guys like Syl and his pal Mikey were the ones telling ya'll he would be gone immediately before this news actually broke, I'm gonna say thanks but I'll wait for someone more reputable to weigh in. I've no idea who Meyer is but looking at his IMDB page, I don't see anything that'd indicate he actually has info on what went down.

Again, it's what I've been saying about listening to randos just because they're saying what you want to hear. But I guess we'll see what happens and what, if anything, the merger has meant for DC films in the coming year. But as of right now I remain unconvinced.

There was an interesting article in Forbes today titled “At This Point What Does Restore the Snyderverse Even Mean?”
Good read that I would recommend to anyone weighing in on this thread.
The writer is an admitted Snyder fan who accurately points out that even IF someone at WB somehow wanted to make more ZSJL movies, not only are all of the actors WAY too busy for at least the next decade to commit to completing a ZSJL trilogy…but more importantly, Snyder himself is way too busy…(lengthy multi-film deal with Netflix, etc.) and would more than likely be disinclined to returned to WB anytime soon, even with some new management in place.
I want ZSJL 2 & 3 more than anyone…but like Tim Burton’s Batman Triumphant or Superman Lives starring Nicolas Cage or an awesome Terminator 3 written and directed by James Cameron or George Miller’s Justice League Mortal…it just ISN’T happening…
I’ll just be glad that I can watch my beautiful 4k ZSJL Blu Ray anytime I want to!

Forbes? LOL, you mean Scott Mendelson? He's more of a blogger than an industry insider, and even though he might claim to be pro-Snyderverse, the whole Snyder fan community and Zack himself has trashed him for some things he's said before.

ZSJL2 would be the Knightmare stuff, right? Which actors are not available? Only Gal Gadot could present a problem I think, the way she's getting booked up. But I don't know how big WW is in the Knightmare world. And the way Zack can shoot stuff in his backyard or a hotel room or on Zoom, he should be able to work her in if it's not a huge part. And I'm sure he could find another Amazon to take off the island and use if he had to substitute her.

I don't get in to the endless speculation based on hints, rumors and leaks. But I do believe in Never Say Never. Spider-Man 4 and 5 with Tobey were the big 'movies that got away' for me before. But now even those are potentially back on the table. And a recasting if need be if someone like Ezra is "unavailable" is not a nail in the coffin. MCU recast Hulk and Rhodey and just kept moving. Potter recast Dumbledore and kept moving.

I'm actually less worried about JL2 and JL3 than getting Snyder back to "Kevin Feige" the whole DCEU. They were earning a lot more money when he was there (counting MOS through Aquaman). He understands the canon, doesn't shy away from the weird stuff like Nolan and Reeves, and he knows how to design characters to be both faithful for fans and modernized enough to work for uninitiated audiences. The success of Aquaman compared to Green Lantern just shows what a positive impact he had on the public acceptance of the DC characters in film.

He has a lot more ideas than just JL2 and JL3. In most interviews he does, other ideas come up. He mentioned a Batfleck and Robin "flashback" HBO Max series last year. He mentioned doing a full Dark Knight Returns film adaptation. The Batfleck/Deathstroke movie was of course out there. I think a Man of Steel 2 with Brainiac was discussed. He discussed bringing Carrie Kelley into the universe as a new Robin. Of course he had plans for Martian Manhunter, John Stewart, the Atom. He has an entire dream DCEU in the planning stages that is far more what fans want than the Shazamverse, the Gunnverse or the garbage versions of Huntress and Black Canary introed in BOP. And the Reevesverse is just a dead end. It does nothing to enhance the shared universe of the DCEU and give us great team-up and crossover movies. If DCEU tried to do a Legion of Doom, they'd have to toss in their own Bat villains out of nowhere, and it would just ignite arguments over whether those or Reeves' were better. Developing a Batverse outside the DCEU is a disaster in the making. And with Reeves' movie unable to outgross Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman or Joker, and barely even going to outgross Suicide Squad, the money isn't there to justify breaking apart the shared universe.

/\THIS/\

I loved loved LOVED The Batman!

But I would gladly embrace more Snyder in what would be an updated wiser version of himself.

Anytime someone thinks they have Hollywood figured out Hollywood slaps you silly…oops I meant they surprise the hell out of you!

The fact that Snyder’s name is still mentioned as much now as when he was directing MOS/BvS tells you all you need to know.

Ezra just needs to be thrown to the curb.

Snyder would have the courage to do so even though he was initially a fan of Ezra.

Yeah Scott Mendelson has definitely had a mostly antagonistic relationship with the Snyderverse fandom since release of BvS. I would take a big, big grain of salt with that most recent article. I will give him his due that he is knowledgeable about basics like multipliers and in general how to assess financial success of a movie, though.

Zack Snyder has consistently said… even while making plans for Rebel Moon… that he is eager to complete his JL saga if given the opportunity.

Best I can see continuation of the Snyderverse depends mostly on Ben Affleck. Even Grace Randolph reported that he’s recently had a change of heart, which is interesting to see. Evidently given the acquisition of WB by Discovery. There are reports that WB offered Affleck a HBO Max Batman series but he declined. I guess the old WB regime still saw the value of keeping Affleck as Batman despite what went down with Geoff “hope and optimism is DC Films new mantra“ Johns attaching himself as co-writer to Ben’s solo Batman film. It was shortly after that that Ben started expressing frustration that “I just can’t crack the script,” lol. Despite the fact that Jay Oliva felt it was the best Batman script he had ever read. Johns even noted at the time that Ben had an amazing talent for writing dialogue. But anyway it was during that time that Ben relapsed, and his marriage fell apart. He saw what was done to Zack with JL, and that the handwriting was on the wall for what would happen to his film project, etc., so he had a bitter taste in his mouth and walked away from the character. Now witch new management coming in he may well be reconsidering. And to some extent playing the ‘hard to get’ card in order to increase his bargaining position.

Ezra I think they can keep but if the reports about his behavior are true he needs to get himself straightened out. Whether it’s a psychiatric disorder, or substance abuse, or both, he needs to announce that he’s getting treatment. If it is one, the other, or both, then I think the GA and infotainment industry will support him in recovery.

The others are I think down for it afaik.

They’d probably work first on a Cavill solo Superman film and/or a Ben Affleck Batman project. That would give time for Zack to complete filming and marketing of Rebel Moon.

Weird digs at Reeves aside, that ship has already sailed. If anyone thinks Discovery will be cancelling the Reevesverse stuff to bring back Snyder, I've got a bridge somewhere to sell them.

Who said they would cancel Reeves’ Batman? We’re about to see a Flash movie with Afleck and Keaton both having large roles as Batman in the same film. It’s obvious WB has no problem with different versions of Batman existing at the same time, and audiences are willing to roll with pretty much anything these days. You could easily have The Batman 2 and Zack Snyder’s Knightmare releasing within the same year and nobody would bat an eye.

Apparantly since Zaslav has taken over and Toby can't decide anything himself, WB insiders are calling him Toby Emmerbitch :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Say what you will, but that's not bad !
