He has said on numerous occasions that if you are wanting a certain line, then skip the others. To me, that always implied that the figures were coming quickly and to be exactly sure of what your funds can handle. That was actually surprising and refreshing to hear. But he also said that if you do skip a figure or line and change your mind later, be prepared to pay hefty aftermarket (Ebay) prices, once they sell out.
This is part of why I don’t like Nanjin’s strategy. Like I’m happy to be getting the figures but he’s essentially telling us to pick and choose our favorites but if we miss out we’re going to regret it. Like I’m fairly certain he knows that a lot of us want to collect more than one line.

Yet he’s asking us to be on board for this five year plan, which we’re already nearing the end of year two of and while we’ve received quite a few figures we don’t have one complete crew and arguably we don’t have most of the iconic characters people really want.

I know about the whole not going for the most popular characters right away and killing the line but still.

It also feels like there’s a lot of chatter from him but it takes things quite a while to actually come to fruition. I’ll be surprised if TMP Kirk is actually in hands by the end of October. It essentially would have to go up and ship next week for that to happen, and even then shipping from overseas will likely take longer.

My apologies - not sure what that means . . . can you please add a bit of background/context detail for us?

.
I think Nanjin has previously said that EXO-6 isn’t solely for the purpose of profiting and his ultimate goal is to build a school. I can’t remember exactly who it’s intended for.

Along with @Mike86 I'll be the 2nd person today to ask "Am I missing something" :)

Based on my knowledge of the way franchise contracts work, that "5 year limitation" is likely down to the contract Nanjin has with CBS (or whoever it is these days) :dunno

I would guess it's up for renegotiation after that, so what (besides competition from other producers, and increased cost of that agreement) would stop Nanjin from signing a new contract to continue production of characters he WANTED to produce?

.
The 5 years is solely his own limit based on him not seeing a long term viability for a company dealing solely in 1/6 Star Trek and his desire to move onto building a school for disadvantaged/disabled children.

That fits with how Nanjin hires at Exo-6 as I believe he has said in the past that he has hired people to give them career chances where other companies would ignore them including homeless and people with disabilities.

He’s also said a few times (most recently last night) that CBS/Paramount would want him to continue past the 5 years so it’s not a license issue.

I'm in two minds whether to get The Motion Picture figures as I prefer The Wrath of Khan. But I do like that Spock and Bones version. Plus, they'll be sort after pieces which will go up in value years later.

Aside from Chakotay & Locutus, all the other preorders are hopefully due by end of 22.
So based on the time left 2023, 24 & 25. We could get all the core crews completed, but it would have to be at a rate of 2 figures per month
TOS 7
TNG 7 (+ Locutus)
DS9 9
Voy 6 (incl Chakotay)
Ent 6
TWOK 7
DISCO 2 (Georgiou, Lorca)
SNW 9
KEL 7 (personally I wouldn't miss these, if not made)
Picard 8
Total 69

With three spare spaces

I'm skipping a lot of early figures to save money for later figures that have been implied or outright said to be planned. It would be pretty disappointing if those figures never happen and I could've gotten some of the earlier ones after all.
Or you might be disappointed to have invested in a line that is not completed to your satisfaction. I know a few people who have purchased the Mirror Universe Spock and Sulu who are hoping for Mirror Kirk, Uhura and Marlena amongst others. I wouldn’t bet on all of them being produced.

Personally,
I recall and have always been enamoured with Nanjins original custom WOK a figures from a few years back. But of course could not afford or justify such an expense. QMX then teased prototypes and I was so looking forward to them. Of course QMX Star Trek production went south. So I’ve been looking forward to EXO-6 production. Then Nanjin showed TMP Kirk and Spock. Had never considered them before. But the protos were just so aesthetically pleasing ( regardless of the green-gray controversy). Even though not as iconic as TWOK they are still most desirable.
As a reminder. When Nanjin first spoke of TMP he seemed to indicate that they would be astoundingly affordable ( less than the preorders so far). It will be interesting to see how that turns out.

Well I would think the TMP figures would be less due to them likely not having accessories. Given how much time they’re taking and the hassle it seems to have been to get them made I wonder if they may be a bit more though.

Kirk is ready and waiting Paramount approval (maybe already granted).

Spock’s robe was outsourced to another company as it has some intricate details. The delay for Spock is because of this other company can’t deliver the robes in time.

The lack of other TMP figures doesn’t really bother me….it’s more his strict only 3 more years policy that does.

That’s a lot of figures to get done in 3 years. But cautiously optimistic haha.
And we haven't even touched TNG yet.

Like one excuse after another with something that was supposed to be a two-park taking up room in the factory floor back in May .

And what happens when Paramount doesn’t approve an image /product on something that EXO-6 is suppose to already have a license for ( and a need and/or desire for) a 5 year limitation ?

Does it go back the drawing board ?

Well as Nanjin said before, we shouldn't take every random comment he states as absolute gospel. With a huge, years-long undertaking like this, there's always going to be unexpected delays and changes in plan and releases getting shifted around.

Maybe it would have been best for him to not promise SO much stuff to us early on, but he's a huge Trek fan who gets just as excited about this stuff as we do, so it's understandable he might get a bit carried away at times.

Thanks for all the extra info folks.

Have to say, I'm feeling less and less confident that the characters I wanted will be produced (all are main characters that customers might reasonably assume would get made).

Ah well, if we end up with bits from 1 series there, and another series there, I'll just sell what I've bought at a loss since "parts of a collection" will just bug me.

As was said above, the man has a real passion for the franchise, and his entire team are doing a truly wonderful job as regards sculpts & production quality, so it will be a real shame if hopes are dashed.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see, with the clock slowly ticking down over the next 3 years.

Fingers crossed for everyone (production team AND customers).

.

The only other character from TMP that should be made should be Ilia, I never expected anyone besides those 4 if possible. Too bad we won’t get her now; some time ago I heard from the artist that did her sculpt years ago that Nanjin had been in contact, but it seems that’s come to naught now. Bummer.
Without Decker unit V'ger would've destroyed Earth. So if you make Ilia, you have to make Decker too IMHO.

Gross. Nobody needs a 12" figure in the likeness of an admitted pedophile. And I'm sure Nanjin wouldn't want to pay Stephen Collins for his likeness rights.
