Nanjin did recently say that he is obligated to do X% of production for new Trek.

I’ve seen Picard season 1 and was underwhelmed, the general character demeanours were a turnoff, I wasn’t watching that higher standard story telling that I was accustomed to from vintage Trek. Season 2 opened with more of a typical Trek feel, I liked seeing Q again, but the momentum slowed, I’m only half way through the season though.

I think they recognized their mistakes on Picard with season 3 appearing to be a last hurrah with the original cast. This apparently wasn’t planned from the beginning so I guess we’ll see what happens. I heard most of the new cast isn’t returning either which is a positive in my book.
That's good to know. I didn't know that. I really like what he is doing and would probably buy some figures from a garbage show just to support him.

I just loved Tim Russ' portrayal. Very stoic, but a total badass. I feel nothing for mirror figures, so I'm relieved.
Tim Russ' Tuvok is one of the best Vulcans out there. I love the Mirror Spock so far, and that Mirror Sulu looks amazing. I can't resist picking those up, not to mention the remaining Mirror figures that will no doubt pop up. But yeah I'd much rather have regular TOS bridge crew, maybe a TOS Klingon/Romulan and definitely would rather have some TWOK sooner rather than later... but this is the warp ride we are on I suppose.

All that money and resources and near carte blanche to make almost any kind of Star Trek show and two seasons of generic, dreary science fiction schlock with some Star Trek trappings is the best they could do.

Season 1 had no clear plan. Season 2 felt like a bad game of telephone where someone handed off each episode to a different person. It says everything that they’re willing to jettison most of any plot threads and new characters for Season 3.

Everything is miserable. It all looks cheap. No one has personality, just generational/personal trauma and angst for the sake of drama.

We went through all that and what are we left with as far as adding to the universe? Picard is a robot, Q is dead, Data is super dead, a bunch of other characters are dead, Seven is miserable and got blocked from Starfleet, Riker never made it to admiral, Mars got wrecked, Utopia Planitia is gone, Starfleet has a million Inquiry class ships, the Federation was okay with android slavery, and the Borg is… I don’t know, Agnes? I guess?

What a waste. I can’t wait to see who dies in Season 3.

The only thing that would redeem the show is if Picard Season 1 and 2 were the cause of the Temporal Cold War because someone wanted to erase everything that happened in the show from the timeline.

No. Reconsider.

DSC/SNW/PCD can survive on their own. Just need a little more pampering and protection from my end. Our production need do something more difficult to improve their skills. They never going to improve and learn to to do difficult figures by doing just Classic Trek. They are already good at doing them.

If New Trek fails un sales, I still gained in skills training in production. EXO-6 still win as a whole, just not much financial return.

Save the money for the figures that you feel good "to be with." Wasting money on non valuable items and "Space" is not logical.

Even if the writing in DSC/PCD hasn't always been the strongest, I still like most of the new characters well enough that I'll likely pick up anything that gets made.

Although I'm not really expecting to see many figures from those shows anyway.

Your assessment on Picard couldn't be more accurate.

They killed off Q? Sheer f***ing hubris!

You summed up everything well my friend.

I stopped watching Discovery, and made it through Picard out of sheer obligation, I guess. I am enjoying Strange New Worlds however. I'm enjoying it a lot.

It's early, but I like SNW so far. I wish it was a new show in a new era on a new ship with new characters... But I'll take what I can get.

I don't object to the seasonal arc format of the other shows, I just don't find them to be very good Star Trek stories, on the whole. I also think the entire franchise would benefit from taking a step away from all of the classic characters and the expectations and challenges that come with them.

Lower Decks is still the best new Trek out there, so far.

That was one of the moments in season 1 that had me shaking my head in disgust. Haven't bothered watching the second season. They lost me with the confusing storylines and uncharacteristic characters, if that makes any sense.

But that Locutus looks phenomenal!

I generally agree, although perhaps not as strongly.

My take is that star trek does not translate outside of episodic plot arcs.

Star Trek can be done well in just about any format if the people doing it actually care, respect the universe and lore, and write compelling stories and characters.

The beauty of Star Trek is that it’s so adaptable. It works well as standalone episodes in all its incarnations, as movies, as long arcs in DS9, as a fun animated show in Lower Decks, as a kid’s show in Prodigy. Science fiction, western, time travel, alternate history, political thriller, mystery, noir, light horror; it’s an endless well of of inspiration and opportunity for great stories.

I may have come off strongly, but I’m generally more of the open minded type that is accepting of new things if it’s done well. But when I see such an important property like Star Trek being mishandled by arrogant people who think they know better than everyone else, I get a bit peeved.

Yes, let’s hand Star Trek over to the person who co-wrote Into Darkness and killed Universal’s Dark Universe project before it got off the ground. Great idea, Paramount. How’s the Halo show with the same playbook working out for you?

I am about 100% on board with you when it comes to the new Trek. Kurtzman isn't perfect, but then neither was Berman. People bitched a LOT about Voyager and Enterprise when they were airing. Hell, I had a friend who stopped watching Enterprise as soon as he heard to theme song.
And now people are absolutely thrilled every time there's a reference to either show. Janeway being on Prodigy was one of its biggest selling points. And people on here are constantly waiting with bated breath on when we'll get more ENT and VOY figs.
I'm just saying, in twenty years people's views on Picard and Discovery might be very, very different.
I mean, hell, even the prequel trilogies are being looked back on fondly these days.

VOY and ENT are like a Shakespeare poem sitting on a pedestal carved by da Vinci in the middle of the Sistine Chapel when compared to Picard And Disco. If we look back fondly on them, it will only be because things have somehow gotten even worse. What a nightmare world that would be.

There’ve been questionable decisions made by people who’ve worked on Star Trek in the past, certainly, and I think we are objectively aware of the things that have gone awry in the past.

That said, this is kind of uncharted territory compared to previous showrunners. Kurtzman and his crew have fundamentally flawed ideas about what Star Trek means based on their interviews.

The blueprint was all there in his previous work on Into Darkness, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Transformers (2007). Take superficial elements of an established property, inject awful edginess, use misery for drama, and wreck established lore/history just for the sake of subverting expectations.

The Prequel Trilogy is now looked upon more favorably now for a number of reasons. The Sequel Trilogy’s failures makes the PT look better by comparison for some. Time and nostalgia have been kinder to it; many of its flaws becoming more charming over time. They’re still flaws, but there’s sparks of Lucas’s vision there. And there are some genuinely good moments throughout, at least.

The PT also established a good setting within the universe with a lot of potential for storytelling, which others have built upon like how The Clone Wars added a lot of depth to the characters and time period. Ultimately, the worst the PT did was not living up to expectations and having some bad dialogue and writing. The PT didn’t destroy or take anything away from the universe like the ST did.

Voyager and Enterprise are in a very similar position. They fell short of expectations for a lot of folks. I was okay with both when they came out, though some parts of both shows weren’t strong. Even if you don’t like them, VOY and ENT are both harmless at the end of the day and added to the universe without really taking anything away.

Picard and Discovery are different. They came in and just wrecked the place, killing off characters and destroying established norms without care. They tore down the entire United Federation of Planets in the future because some alien got scared and all the ships blew up. For what? That’s the same as JJ destroying the New Republic in the ST because he wanted to blow up a planet (which was almost Coruscant).

The PT, VOY, and ENT never did anything like that.

So I don’t think PIC and DIS will be looked upon favorably down the road… Unless something worse comes along.

Tell that to DS9 with some of the greatest multi-season plot arcs in the history of television.
You are right, and I didnt fully express myself in that quick post.

Multi-season plot arcs are quite different than one arc that starts and ends each season, with no episode-contained arcs.
