The size is definitely an issue but it won’t stop me from buying it if it goes on sale. Been wanting one for a while and this is as good as it gets for likely years.

I hope for all of the people buying this that Hot Toys has snuck the new Mech Test/Mark III portrait in under that helmet.

Oh dear, I was not aware of any scale issues with this when I pre-ordered. Oh well... I only wanted to get a Mk1 anyway (I missed out on previous releases).

I'm still not entirely convinced there is an issue with it being shorter. Its shown as a shorter suit than most and being built as a practical suit to fit RDJ I'm sure didn't make it any taller.

We'll see what the end comparison is with exactly how short it is I suppose, but as someone who doesn't own a MK1 this will do nicely to cap off my Iron Man collection. I suppose outside of the mk3...

The height of the Mark I Diecast figure is listed at 11.81” - which is the same height listed for the Mech Test Tony figure who’s just wearing the boots, and almost a half-inch shorter than the suit-up Mark V Tony they just released. Unless Tony had a growth spurt from those cheeseburgers he ate after leaving the cave, it doesn’t make a lot of sense.

I'm not saying it makes sense but that's as the film depicts it :dunno

Everyone is having the same discussion in the endgame cap thread right now. Heights are depicted differently from film to film and lots of times shot to shot.

I think it'll be fine if you display it off on its own and up on the diorama base they included. But it's not shorter because of how it was depicted in the films - it's simply because Hot Toys has been going larger and larger with their Iron Men over the years and didn't want to invest the resources to make a larger Mark I when it was far cheaper to just redo some parts in diecast and toss it on a big base.

There's no world or in-film depiction where Tony without a suit should be as tall as or taller than the Mark I.

Even in the hall of armor screen grab earlier in the thread you can see its pretty short compared to the other suits.

He's meant to be nearly the same size as Mk1. Not much height is added when hes in the suit. You can see his shoes through the feet "armor"

While I agree Hot toys has definitely had a problem with making their suits bigger and bigger, I think that's more so the new suits being too big and not this one being too small.

As I said though the height of the character in various suits has been all over the place in film, as well as figure form as you pointed out.

I think the problem stems from IM1 suits being practical so they were made to fit RDJ. All the rest were partial or full CG so they took liberties with the sizes. There's even a BTS clip of an ILM guy talking about how they made the suits taller in IM2 to get more heroic proportions. If HT is just taking the models and converting them for the figures, that size difference will transfer across.

I mean there is some shenangans in the MCU with height consistency. RDJ height varries, the suit adds at times 5 inches of height magically...ect. But in the escape scene the suit is clearly 6.5-7 feet tall minimum when its engaged in action. I mean the guys in the cave are leaning back to try and get a headshot off of it. If you watch the scene, Mark 1 is swiping its arm around and hitting people in the top of the head its so big.

Hot Toys rereleasing this is not about accuracy, its about saving money on not having to design something that fits in with the other figures of the last 4 years.

That's exactly what I mean. This was obviously done to make the armor seem more imposing in these particular shots.

The huge variance of height its shown at doesn't really convince me this figure is definitely out of scale. Just that the consistency of scale has been anything but with both figures and film.

No doubt the re-release is definitely to cash in on people preferring diecast versions. They probably just looked at how the actual prop was scaled in the beginning and made that.

I think this hall of armor shots from the movie can be a good reference of how tall the armors are.

From what we see here, Mark I is indeed relatively shorter than the following armors.
And that movie scene where Mark I stands tall above the bad guys head, is obviously a trick shot to make Mark I presence more heroic, IMHO.

I think the way the helmet on the Mark I is sunk in to the neck in the hall of armor explains a lot of the height difference. I think that unlike the other suits, the Mark I has no endoskeleton so without a person inside - it slouches and compresses. At least that's how I've always perceived it.

In the hall of armors, I think they use a mannequin with the exact measurements of Tony to support Mark I, otherwise it would just slump as it's more like an exoskeleton unlike other armors which is total full body armor.

Here's a screencap from the movie, taken from the cave battle scene, we can see the helmet is slumped/slouched to the body armor, even with Tony's head inside:

It looks just like the positioning on the hall of armor, with the jaw overlapped to the upper body armor, etc.

It can also be seen here, worn by Tony with the slumped helmet.. including the trickshots where they made it as if Mark I is a giant compared to the bad guy.. in reality we can see that the perspective is tilted to make Mark I taller:

Hmm you may be right. I found this pic from the suits at a Marvel Event. The head is about where it should be. Still though, the suit is only an inch or two shorter than his other suits - not nearly a foot shorter like the figures will depict. The Mark I is listed at 11.81" - the new upcoming Mark III is listed at 12.79"!

Yes, I think we are all here victims of the trick camera, where they want us to believe that Mark I is big and menacing.. in reality, it's a scrap metal exoskeleton what-I-can-find to make it work emergency suit. So it makes sense that it's minimalist, including the height.

And as you said, the scale got worse due to HT's habit to make their newest Iron Men larger and larger.. So HT actually made Mark I with the correct scale, but they ruined it by making the modern armor too big/large. (although from the pic on your post, we can see that the amor on the far right (can't remember which Mark that is) is indeed taller than Mark III in the middle..) so maybe the armor does get bigger and bigger, leaving Mark I even look smaller in contrast.

It does look so short there. I guess I will skip it since it looks comical next to the other iron men.

That’s the thing. There are so many factors that go into what is or isn’t the right height.

-There’s what the collectors see in their minds when they picture them
-what we as collectors think it should be based on the movies vs comics vs what it is
-actor heights vs in-movie heights
-height from scene to scene altogether and dependent on if in full gear or civilian clothing
-difference in CGI files

Ppl collecting transformers, both toon and movies, have this same problem b/c nothing is consistent. It’s all about what looks visually best in the frame at that exact moment for the that particular scene to evoke a particular symbol or feeling.
