She had a decent home, clean clothes, beautiful skin, hair, and teeth. Looked to me like she was doing just fine.
When people talk about Luke's suffering, they're talking mostly about getting his hand cut off. But in ANH he gets assaulted by sand people, accosted by aliens at the cantina, almost drowns in the trash compactor, then watches his mentor die, and he also loses his childhood best friend in the final battle.
Then he goes on to get savagely assaulted by a wampa and almost dies in the cold, crash lands his Snowspeeder, gets his ass thoroughly kicked by Darth Vader, losing a hand in the process, as well as having everything he ever believed ripped from him when Vader tells him the truth.
What "hardships" does Rey go through? What crippling defeat does she suffer, but brushes herself off and decides to go on? Oh right...none. Cause she's perfect and never grows or changes or even has a personality.
Your argument about Rey not being the ultimate Mary Sue is a BS argument.
Rey home was a broke down AT-AT. No heat no running water, and was alone with no friends. Luke lived on a farm with his aunt and uncle, and had friends in town.
Luke had great skin, hair, teeth too. Like almost every main character in movie and TV do since movies began, it's Hollywood not reality. This is a BS point to hammer on about.
Rey also saw her mentor (Han) murdered in front of her. She was raised by a dude who ran a company town. He lived off exploiting people, including her. She too is assaulted, but by locals. Instead of a trash compactor she's chased by a Rathtar. Now you got me on not seeing her childhood friend die, however considering she had no childhood friends I think that one is a wash. Force Awakens is mostly a clone of ANH including Rey's journey in that movie. Did she handle herself better then Luke? Well yeah duh she had a harder life then him, she had to learn to protect herself because she was alone.
Did Rey suffer as much physical abuse as Luke? No, not that we saw on screen, but that doesn't mean she didn't have struggles and defeats in the movies. Rey meets a childhood hero and watches him get killed. Meets another childhood hero and gets casually dismissed by him. Gets chased and tortured by a dude, then develops a relationship with him, goes to meet him sure that he will be on her side, only to have him turn her over to his boss, who then slaps her around and shows she's not as powerful as she thinks, then the dude she was she was there for saves her, only to have him later tell her she's not special and is nothing, and dude becomes the leader of a group that's out to kill half the galaxy. She finally gets training from a third childhood hero, and later that person dies too. She later finds her real Dad is the most evil and hated guy in the galaxy and has everything she ever believed ripped from her.
Now all that said do I think the ST movies good? No they were a mess and poorly written, mostly just copies of poor retellings of the OT. However, there is character work on the ST characters that get overlooked and hand waved off because the movies were overall bad. Rey is the prime example of this. She wasn't a Mary Sue, her struggles and defeats were just different the Luke's, despite the stories being similar.
