If BR2049 had naked gynoids, an amazing spinner chase, a strong villain with an army of robots, and a tough, resourceful hero with a take charge attitude... it would have made billions.
Have them gynoids riding mecha T-rexes and I would've already rewatched it 10 times by now instead of the 1

Reminds me of a vintage New Yorker cover.

I really don't get the anxiety and kvetching about his age, or that it's some huge impasse for some, he's a frikin old guy playing an old guy, no $%!#! What's not to get? Either by desire or necessity driven to adventure once again, whose miles and now the years have fianly caught up with him, what's the problem? That's a great thing to explore.
Don't get the complaints. that is the character through and through, why would he stop.
Of all the the things wrong with Crystal Skull his age wasn't one of them, and it's not here either. It's a legit part of the character.
WTF do people want? For frikin Muts to take over? For a recast? I certainly don't.
I loved Mangold's Old Man Xavier and Logan, Loved Hopkins as old Man Zorro (Speilberg/Amblin prod.) who inspired the movie serials before that, and Old Man Jones fits right in.

If the story and direction suck however that's something else. :wink1:

Great post. I would kill to be as fit as Ford at eighty. I will say, I did some quick research and this may be the oldest actor to be the lead in an action film in the modern era. Connery was younger when he stopped and Stallone, Schwarzenegger are 5+ years younger.

I agree, 110 year old Indy in 30 years must happen :yess:

Anyone that's waving the "old age is okay" flag needs to watch Cry Macho. I grew up loving Clint Eastwood, but mother of god, that thing was an embarrassment. He's beating up men in their 20's and 30's, having relations with a woman half his age - it's just cringe inducing.

Even though they're fit for their age, doesn't mean people want to watch old men acting like young men. The Irishman, gees - another embarrassment. No doubt all amazing actors, but old men should act like old men; maybe take up the mentor mantle, not the action hero.

But as I always say - each to their own - if this sort of thing spins your noodle, good luck to you.

(Now, where was that hammer...)

I never finished that movie, though it had more to do with not wanting to see Eastwood, arguably one of the last, if not the last of his generation, look feeble and... old.

With that being said, I respect guys like Eastwood and definitely Ford for still doing it. Who know's how the movie will turn out, but damn. Ford does not look 80 years old. Notwithstanding the fact that they're wealthy and successful in their field with access to the best in trainers and nutritionists, but to still be active and fit at their ages is exceptionally rare in this day and age. So on that level, hat's off to 'em. This movie might surprise us. Time will tell. But to automatically jump to negativity and crapping all over a movie that isn't out yet, feel free. I'm all set with that. I'm not blindly optimistic in the slightest, but my inner child is looking forward to it.

What's so great about it?

You see a character that has more story to tell... I see an aging actor working for a big payday and a studio that wants to monetize its property.

Curious, eager or not, I'm guessing most everyone will be looking at this movie with a wary eye -- he's a little old to be playing Indiana Jones, isn't he?

If Mangold pulls it off and delivers a good adventure movie, and I sincerely hope he does, it will be one of the great achievements in cinema.

Yep Cry Macho was painful to watch. The Marksman with Liam Neeson was almost the exact same movie but so much more respectable.

Indiana Jones is about adventure.

If this was some other kind of franchise, the dynamic would be different.

When Stallone entered the Creed film series, he didn't try to keep fighting as Rocky. There just comes a point where it makes no more sense. Also Harrison Ford is a movie star for a previous generation. While Shia LaBeouf was the wrong choice, the idea of passing the torch isn't a horrible idea.

Look at DeNiro in The Irishman. It's just bizarre and borderline mind boggling that anyone could believe DeNiro could pass for 40-50 years younger even with modern day technology.

But I felt the same with Guy Pearce and Prometheus. Just get an older actor for the later timeline scenes.

Why not pass it on to Leo DiCaprio to rebuild the franchise. Plenty of established star power there. Or Chris Pine, Chris Pratt or any number of young actors with some action movie pedigree.

If you pick a new actor, you open up the story possibilities. You can rebuild the origin story. You've got options

You keep Harrison Ford and you are stuck in a specific timeline and stuck with all kinds of physical limitations and you are stuck with what all the other movies did before.

If it was a different actor, I'd say it's a toss up to replace them. But this is Harrison Ford. Who has mailed it in for the last 15 years. Put it this way, Ford has done himself zero favors in helping himself to get choice and coveted roles.

Mangold:

"It became really important to me to figure out how to make this a movie about a hero at sunset.[...] The issues I brought up about Indy's age were not things I thought were being addressed in the material being developed at the time. There were 'old' jokes, but the material itself wasn't about it. To me, whatever your greatest liability, you should fly straight towards that. If you try to pretend it's not there, you end up getting slings and arrows the whole way."

I loved him in the ST :nana:

Man did the Irishman suck lol

Exactly, to the last. That is the character.

Yep, If they were denying his age pretending he wasn't old, I'd get the complaints.
But they are not. They are putting it front and forward, and addressing that is part of his ongoing character adventure.
You know what the character and movie is, going in. This isn't some subversive betrayal or affront to the character, they are acknowledging his physical change over time, yet remaining true to the character, who is by necessity or desire, still always drawn to Adventure.
That is the character through and through, and likely how he would go out. And the actor (and Director) wants to put out one final story about that.

I'd rather they close this out with Ford having one last adventure , rather than Disney recast or replace him with frikin Muts.
If it's good or bad, again, I'll wait to see some trailers and the actual film to condemn it.

As for the character being young in perpetuity, If they do inevitably reboot / recast Indian Jones like they do with Bond, Batman, Spider-Man, frikin everything. Or worse spun-off as whatever derivative crap formula teen, race and/or gender swapped version you want the uncreative brain trust currently at Disney to pull out of their @$$ and claim "Look it's NEW! and Original!"
No thanks, off hand that doesn't interest me at all, especially with Disney behind it, Yet I also won't just dismiss it on that basis alone, and I would give it a chance based on the trailer, who they cast etc.
Some characters are so well designed, they may transcend their creators and any one actor alone to personify them.

If Indiana Jones does continue beyond them, that is a testament to Lucas, Spielberg and Ford. :wink1:
