Yes of course, it was just a commentary on the state of the industry and how it strays further and further from an art form (and has been doing for decades) into what basically constitutes advertising. As a matter of fact, I've seen many ads that are more artistic than many a Hollywood movie...
 
I truly love it that no one has faith in a movie directed by the man who made Ford Vs Ferrari, Logan, 3:10 to Yuma, Walk The Line, Copland and Girl Interrupted, all great films imo. Even his lesser films, like Knight and Day or Wolverine are decent action films. Just stirring of course lol.

Agree, haven't followed this thread much, or any behind the scenes drama, and don't get the flat out hive-mind click bait tool condemnation of this here. Based on Mangold's 3:10, Logan and FvF (and count another who enjoyed Night & Day), if he's got a good story to tell here, I'm more than willing to give it a fair shot.

I've seen complaints - but Ford is old!!! So? No kidding, he's playing a guy who is constantly pushing himself often to far, always chasing the next Adventure, the next "prize". That is and should be his character to the last, and a story I want to see culminate to a good end.

And Atlantis as a mythological place out of time, seems fair game to explore.
I'll at least wait and see what the trailers have to offer before fully praising or condemning it.:wink1:

As long as Jones isn't some useless deadbeat who commits suicide by his own evil brat (is Muts even in this?:lol) Or hiding away on some island like a pos sniveling coward, betraying everything he was, it can't be worse than that crap (Is Disney SW Story Group and JJ's Empty Box writing even a part of this?) .

Definitely directed some good films, I certainly enjoyed Ford vs Ferrari and 3:10 to Yuma. Also quite liked Copland. Haven't seen any of the other movies you listed.
However, even talented directors will struggle to save a movie that is badly written or has excessive studio interference or the creative input of Kathy Kennedy. If the rumours turn out to true about poor test screenings, multiple endings etc though only rumours, doesn't fill me with confidence.
Besides, I've no interest in watching 80 year old Indy.
I have no ill will toward the movie, wish it every success, but personally I'm not particularly interested. I'll stick with the original 3.

No worries but I won’t know if it’s badly written, interfered with or if Ford can’t cut it at eighty until I’ve seen it.

I love 2 and 3 but even they have their problems.

Very fair. And I would agree that it ought to be given a chance. For some reason I'm just not interested in this. I think it's down to not wanting to see such an elderly Indy, still wearing that outfit. A vague feel of the movie trying to capture glory days long gone.
If I do see it, it will be when its released on Disney +.
Hope it turns out good but I'm just not feeling this one.

Even if Mangold was the sole writer of the project instead of one of FOUR, it still doesn't mean anything when everything he does has to be approved by Disney and Lucasfilm.

This isn't his story. He's a yes-man. He's a glorified errand boy, carrying out the commands of his superiors, who have all got together in a conference room over an expensive catered lunch and written down all the things this movie needs to include on a big whiteboard.

This movie is product. It's content. To quote Dick Jones from OCP...."WHO CARES IF IT WORKED OR NOT??" The only thing that matter is $$$$$$, not telling a story. Not "respecting" the characters or the audience.

The only thing that matters to the executives is appealing to as wide an audience as possible to get as many asses in seats as possible, to ensure more sequels and spin-offs and TV shows, and as an extra bonus, to add a little personal ideological preaching in there just for good measure.

You want to give Mangold the benefit of the doubt based on his past work. Fine. Well I'm basing my prediction on Kennedy's track record with Star Wars.

There was no need for this movie to ever happen, just like there was no need for Crystal Skull. People may not have liked ToD or Last Crusade, but at least there was genuine love put into those movies. Elements of ToD were made with unused concepts from Raiders, so there's still some remnants of the original vision of Raiders in its DNA. The same can't be said about these soulless and sterile products.

I don't pay for Disney products anymore, but I'm sure I'll watch this, or at least skim through it, when it's online just out of curiosity. If it's any good, I'll own up to it and eat my officially licensed Indiana Jones fedora. I don't think that'll happen though.

If I was younger and single I may agree with you on all points and you may have convinced me that this film will be utter garbage :)

But I have an eight year who worships Indy in all his forms even Crystal Skull. He doesn’t know about corporate products, Kathy Kennedy, expensive catered lunches and coffees, whiteboards with post it notes and one hundred people all having their own opinions. He just loves rollicking adventures and he is incredibly smart for his age (which terrifies me) and I utterly respect his views and opinions so we will go and see it and grumpy old me will probably hate it and say well it’s better than the last one but that really wasn’t hard but he will probably love it and not see the cynical side of it and just see the fun of it and the heart of it and somehow through him I will see it too.

Or he could say well that sucked.
 
I hope your kid loves it. I honestly do. I'm not saying that to be snarky or something like Comic Book Guy.

I was six years old when Temple of Doom came out, and I'll never forget how thrilling it was to see it on the big screen, larger than life. The reason that one is still my personal favorite even though I know Raiders is the "better" movie is cause I have such fond memories of my dad taking me to see it.

Even my son acknowledges that Raiders is the only one that truly matters. It completely transcends the genre and the franchise

That in and of itself is testament to just how far down the drain movie making has gone. There is close to zero artistry, and certainly zero vision, to these "beloved" blockbusters.
I'll take George Lucas' or Zack Snyder's idiosyncratic movies over audience-tested, lowest common denominator, crowd pleasers.

This is the way with Hollywood big budget films.
Its an investment and nothing more to the money people. They will do focus groups, multiple endings, script and cast changes if they think it will secure more money in ticket sales.

Sad thing is, it works…. you have to remember the vast majority of movie audiences are happy with T$A , car chases, stuff blowing up, and snappy one liners….those films make bank….and thats what they are after.

The reality, is the great films of the last 10 years have been director driven, and many times smaller films. The blockbusters that have been actually good, have had a strong director/producer/cast, that played hardball with the studio to get what they wanted.

I recently saw an interesting interview about this happening on the set of BR2049….and that why we got a great film….which tanked at the box office beacause you average Joe thought it was “boring” and they had to think to much about it.
