Ever?

Did this for the Dark Discussions podcast a few months ago. Let's see...

Top 5 in order:

1. The Thing
2. Jaws
3. Night of the Living Dead
4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
5. Halloween

The rest:

The Exorcist

Though to be fair I couldn't think of anything more horrifying than being made to watch Breaking Dawn again.

I must say Les that that is a list of movies to respect. However, it seems alot of posters on this board don't seem to realize that movies WERE around before 1960.

Of course we've lost most of the films from before 1930, so we're mostly drawing on 30 years of film prior to 60, and 50 years of film after. Factor in that more recent films are more readily available, and that the 60's saw a radical redirection for the horror genre, and that observation isn't unexpected. In fact I'd say this board has done a better job than many others I've seen, where posters didn't know movies were made before Platinum Dunes.

I really enjoyed the Entity

JAWS is a horror film. The Greatest Horror film EVER:D This film with the exception of The Exorcist scared more people then any other film in History. It is not straight foward Horror. It has elements of action, adventure, comedy and Drama. But deep down it gets us by our most primal fears. It's why it's not only the great horror movie but the Greatest film EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALIEN is a Horror film all the way IMO. It's horror with Sc-Fi elements. ALIENS on the other hand I would call Sci Fi.

I agree that Predator is not a horror film.

Halloween is a great film.

In reverse order:

1. Which Halloween?
2. Agreed on Predator.
3. Double agree on Alien, though I don't know that the film would be as scary now, especially since the Alien itself is so iconic, and its life cycle, a surprise in 1979, is well known now.
4. Jaws was made as a horror film and scared audiences more than all but a handful of movies in history. It caused a serious down turn in beachgoing that summer and it ranks as my favorite film of all time. BUT the fact that it is a bit of a watered down horror (as you say, heavily mixed with adventure and drama), when ranking horror films, I have to slide it down below the Thing, which I find more effective AS a horror film. Does that make sense?
