Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (June 30th, 2023)

It is reassuring. I'm trying to keep my expectations low, because that seems to be the key in liking this.

I'm most excited about the opening -- hope I'm not too excited.

And of course about Toht 2... I mean, Mads.

Opening too dark but not enough to ruin it thank god.

Felt very Spielberg-ish.

The overall movie had a ton more nuance than what I was expecting that was a pleasant surprise.

Characters motivations were fleshed out quite a bit.

All that sounds great! There's a lot of nuance in Raiders that is left far behind in all the other sequels.

Let me describe old Indy:

Seasoned, grizzled, determined, frustrated and angry.

Loved it.

Of the two old Indy’s DOD > KOTCS.

More focused, wittier, angrier, smarter and engaged than his just there KOTCS version.

Yeah I'd say the movie is definitely worth watching for the opening sequence alone. Really well constructed and gives you a flavor of what another 80s Indy movie might have been like if we had gotten it.

Definitely nuances in the themes related to science vs religion, math over supernatural.

Hitler’s obsession and preference for one over the other made for discord within his own ranks.

That was then tied to Indy’s own views over science and magic and how to protect and preserve or destroy and hide for the greater good.

Yeah I'd say the movie is definitely worth watching for the opening sequence alone.

I figure, for the price of admission, at worst I'll get a good long peek back to 'what could have been'.

The one thing I absolutely do not agree with Khev and Buff is that I never got any Polar Express vibes whatsoever!

The compaint right now is that

she knocked him out yet he fought big brutes and was never knocked out.

Wor-Gar’s enjoyment will be impacted by his obsession (addiction?) to read spoilers before seeing the movie.

Knowing spoilers ahead of time for Indy's final outing would have been an epic tragedy.

Watching the planes fly through the storm I was literally

on the edge of my seat with my mind racing through all the possibilities from Nazis to dinosaurs to knights in shining armor to some crazy future society.

Seriously I haven't had a singular moment of such excitement and wonder in a movie theater that I can recall in recent memory and the payoff didn't disappoint.

One thing I'm happy about, is after being defeated in 1989 by Batman, it looks like the rematch this year will go to Indiana Jones over Keaton Bats.

I thought a few moments came close, but it was never enough to take me out of the movie.

The bigger issue I think was his husky old man voice coming out of a supposedly younger Indy. Although I kinda got used to that after awhile too.

Yeah Indy got revenge on Batman for 1989 and Cameron got revenge on Top Gun for 1986.

I wasn't exactly on the edge of my seat, but I agree it was a clever ending and came close to capturing the magic and wonder of that Last Crusade ending with the knight.

And I had actually forgot the entire thing was spoiled years ago by those filming pics.

assuming that there was going to be some time travel twist that showed Holler anticipating getting struck on the train and setting up some contingency for it and was surprised that that never panned out.
