The Batman (June 25, 2021)

To me one of the biggest things that I noticed in the film that made me think that was a great idea. Anyone notice Bruce's home, it's like Dracula lives there. Lol it was gothic, and very much reminded me of how burton used that style for his Gotham. God I love this film there is so many things that they did right with the world, and atmosphere. The intro, and how he narrated the "when that light hits the sky it's not just a call, it's a warning" the way every criminal looked up, then saw a dark area they thought he was in, that was amazing. Lol

first 10-15 mins are my absolute fave of the film. Immense.

Exactly I love the whole film but that first half set the mood nicely and being a big Batman fan that was a dream come true to witness.

Yup I was only going to get the Deluxe figure but now I preordered the batsignal also to go with him. That moment has become my favorite in a Batman movie.

Oh gosh yes I think it’s unanimous that everyone feels that way truly a glorious and powerful moment that everyone will want replicated on their shelves although scale might be the only problem with the HT signal.

You want that money and to be in good movies too, but they don't always align. He might never have gotten this role without the Twilight exposure. He went the auteur route, built his craft in small movies. I never watched Twilight, but I did see some of his smaller films. I knew what he was going to bring and it was even better than I imagined.

Saw this last night with some friends. Some random thoughts:

Spoiler:

- People in this movie can survive anything from being repeatedly pummeled in the face by an armored vigilante to being two feet away from a fiery explosion (Alfred should be dead and Bruce's face should be roasted). And if you're shot, well, you'd better hope the script needs you to stay alive.

- Jim Gordon is written and played as the most cliche'd New York detective imaginable. Every other scene he's in: "Jesus... what kind of sick freak does this?" I wasn't expecting him to be deep, but something more than a caricature would've been nice.

- Riddler is great, but I'll echo other boardies' thoughts that we really ought to have explored other Batman villains on the big screen by now. Judging by that ending scene at Arkham, we're still not out of the woods with the usual ones.

- Why is Colin Farrell in this movie? I assume for marquee value, since he's caked in prosthetics and doesn't even look like himself. I never felt like I was watching Colin in this movie, but that's less of a compliment and more of a "they might as well have hired someone else" deal. I liked the purpose he serves here, though. He's a classic Batman villain, but relegated to a very "real" role that doesn't take anything away from the main baddie.

- The new Batman "theme" isn't interesting enough to warrant being played constantly throughout (and for almost the entire first 20 mins). Same goes for Ave Maria.

- The cape feels out of place with this take on Batman. A younger, slimmer Bruce in a more modern city who's cobbled together his gear and keeps track of his performance in a journal? Doesn't seem like he'd choose a cape.

- Still don't like the cowl. Wish it was as well-developed as the torso armor (which I quite dig the look of).

- I'm glad this Batman doesn't change his voice. The modulator would've been too impersonal and the growl, well, even Bale hardly gets away with it.

- The white privilege line really is silly even in context. Catwoman angrily calls out Batman (clearly white) for probably growing up rich, says that line, then proceeds to kiss him. It's like it was thrown in the film for its own sake, but none of the characters acknowledge it (nor does the plot require them to).

- The kiss feels sudden as well. Where'd the romance come from?

- Car chase was my favorite part and, thinking back on it, the shots are so close-up that it doesn't track the way most car chases do. Seems like it's more about evoking an intense feeling than a real sense of where the cars are in relation to the environment, yet it still works.

- Robert Pattinson's hair stylist really went for their best Trent Reznor recreation on this.

- Depsite my fatigue with superheroes, this didn't feel anything like an MCU film nor any other DC film. Not an entirely original experience (it's still a superhero flick), but still somewhat fresh.

- Impressive pacing for a three-hour movie. In retrospect, the story doesn't feel all that sprawling, yet the filmmakers were able to stretch it to a massive runtime AND make it go by quickly. Perplexing.

- All in all, it's one of the good Batman movies. Maybe even top three for me. Don't know how much that's worth since it's been done well before (what reboot are we on at this point?), but it was enjoyable. I'd be more actively enthusiastic if my qualms with the musical score and the suit didn't exist.

I didn't. It all felt right for Year 2. Spring loaded grapple guns on his forearms was pretty clever. I did like the eye cam, although that exceeded the tech of everything else he had. His Man of Steel armor sure wasn't underwhelming lol.

True but I don’t think timelines matter anymore..This Batman is considered DCEU which means he’s a Batman from another universe if we have to think about it . Just like a Jim Carrrey Riddler still exists another universe or there is another earth with no Batman ..just a Batwoman and this Gotham has the Riddler as a psychopath killer

So this Batman is very primitive in tech

I wouldn't say that, seems pretty even to me. Maybe they just have creative problems with how the story escalates and resolves?

Not necessarily..it drags way too long and gets very winded, some of it could’ve got chopped..but the atmosphere seems to drag, If these last two acts were the so called reshoots then you can clearly tell …still good, but kind of could’ve been shortened and it wouldn’t effect the story

Not necessarily..it drags way too long and gets very winded, some of it could’ve got chopped..but the atmosphere seems to drag, If these last two acts were the so called reshoots then you can clearly tell …still good, but kind of could’ve been shortened and it wouldn’t effect the story

Valid. Movies have been playing fast and loose with the physics of explosions for many decades, but this was definitely beyond the pale and the Bulletproof Bat was too much, but as I've said elsewhere -- I forgive it thanks to good will earned elsewhere. But I do see it.

- The cape feels out of place with this take on Batman. A younger, slimmer Bruce in a more modern city who's cobbled together his gear and keeps track of his performance in a journal? Doesn't seem like he'd choose a cape.

I don't know that it's 'cobbled together' -- just early and unrefined, but it's bulletproof, saved him from lethal electrocution and filled with emergency safety features. Batman *is* a cape. Can't have a Bat with no Cape.

I've been in enough dysfunctional relationships (when I was young and foolish) not to question that. Two damaged people in an intense situation; granted Bats is in a mask but he's powerful and athletic and she's a smoke show -- nothing about that chemistry didn't make sense to me in context.
