What?s dumbfounding to me is that this same reaction didn?t happen with Leto Joker.

It's Heath Ledger's fault. This cult rose up around his performance such that never existed before, not even with Nicholson. We see a branch of it in the action figure domain where there is a level of obsession over his likeness and costume accuracy that supersedes all other characters. How many different custom sculpts have there been at this stage? Any given Hot Toys thread can't go one page without someone posting a new one, just drowning out anyone who might be interested in the stock head

Ledger really started something. Since his performance the character has been assigned an 'importance' that wasn't there before, the Joker was just Batman's villain to the wider audience. Now he gets his own 'serious' movie all to himself that has to be played by a top method actor, one who won't be mere caricature.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing as far as the movies - it's kind of annoying with regard the toys because there have been legends of cinema and iconic characters before that can't seem to get perfect sculpts and too few seem to care for that to change, then Ledger comes along and everyone's standards suddenly jump into the stratosphere for this one actor. *looks at his flawed Arnie Terminator sculpts* I'm not bitter

But yeah, there is a certain nuttery around the Joker character now and I guess the media is a bit paranoid about it.


edit - to be clear I'm not equating people who want perfect Heath Ledger sculpts with people who might go on shooting rampages dressed as the Joker, otherwise I'd be a candidate for donning Gargoyle sunglasses and arming up with a SPAS 12 and an AR18

Um, the reality is, if the media would stop reporting things like this and giving these ********s any attention by reading their manifestos and plastering their pictures and names all over, chances are situations like this wouldn’t even happen. People starved for attention desperately seek it, and the media gives them exactly what they want. Don’t report it, then the chances of it go down expedntially.
Take for instance. When you watch a baseball game on tv and a fan goes and runs on the field. They won’t show it! I’ve heard announcers say that they condone that type of behavior so they refuse to televise it. But if somebody starts shooting everybody, the media shows pictures of the person, their name, age, etc and even read their manifestos! And they do it for days on end!
Sad thing is if anybody goes to the movies and some ******** comes around to shoot em, people have no way of defending themselves! And you can thank the media for that! So in fact they’re not doin you any favors of telling you not to go to see the joker. They are just kicking hornets nests.

This just reminds me that this world is full of idiots. I remember growing up in the 80's and society was back-lashing against metal/rock music. How it was the "devil's music" with secret messages if played backwards. Hell, Benatar's Hell is for Children was all Satan just look at the title. Even as a 10 year old listening to the lyrics it was clear as day it was about child abuse. How can an adult not see that?! Stupid herd mentality.

I was expecting this take on the Joker but I didn't think it would have taken this long to make it. Obviously if it wasn't for Heath's tragic end, I would have bet my life that they would have forced him to make a stand alone movie. Regardless, today's world is so very different from the world in 2008 so I this level of backlash was really a given.

Yeah, it's ridiculous.

Anyone else absolutely dumbfounded by this hysteria surrounding this movie; as in, "It's going to cause shootings, and killings, and copycat killers, won't someone PLEASE think of the children!!"

I can't remember a movie ever being freaked out about this.....ever. Not before its release. Calling in the national guard at screenings cause a guy in make up is a psycho and probably kills some people on screen??

What the hell is this country coming to??

I don't blame if cinemas take a bit more precautions than normal. That isn't what deserves criticism but the events that led to stuff like this happening.
