Now this is just a quick edit, so it remains to be seen what my actual customization can achieve, but I played around with editing the eyes and the eyes + eyelids to envision the difference. I copied and enlarged the SS eyes for the edits on the right, so it should all be achievable through paint.
Toning down the shiny white sclera, increasing iris size, decreasing pupil size, and lightening the eyelids makes a huge difference IMO.
Ah alright, I thought you might have seen repaints I was unaware of. In this hobby I've learned time and time again that paint can create strong visual illusions, so I still stand by that the HT can be better than the Sideshow. And given the importance of eyes to us humans, it's crucial that they look right.
And for what it's worth, your comment prompted me to make the mock-up above (and cross-referencing screenshots), which taught me that the red/pink eyelids are crucial for achieving the right look. They enhance the realism and make the eyes appear larger than they actually are. So I've added that to my list of to-dos.

Thank you! Definitely made many mistakes, but I'm really happy with how it's going. I just ordered another blank head so I can have him looking off to the side.
@Dixmois I think you nailed the makeup on skin oil perfectly! This looks so real--incredible job starting from scratch like that.

Thank you! I bought the Vallejo Basic Colour Set from Amazon and just used some brushes that I already had to lay down the skin, but got a small hoard of fine brushes for the tattoos and the eyes. All I thinned the paint with was water, and I'd do a little bit of work, and found it was best to let it dry and then spray it with some matte Krylon spray paint before doing more. I also used the chalk pastels I've had for ages, the black and the brown which I shaved down to powder, for shadows because it was easier than trying to use paint. I used a satin Rust-oleum clear to top coat it, and to do the eyes I bought a bottle of DecoArt DuraClear gloss varnish which I did 3 layers of. The body was the worst to paint. I didn't sand the joints first, but should have. I did have to trim back the flesh of the joints on the shoulders, the elbows, and the torso because of paint rub. Once I did take a Dremel to the elbow joints (the paint didn't want to stick at all) I used a red sharpie on them, and it works well enough for me. All in all, it wasn't as bad to do as I thought it was going to be. Worst part was getting all the crap together and actually sitting down to do it.

I wish I would have gone for this Maul at the time. I have the one from Solo, which is cool in its own right, but this version is more iconic and would have been a better fit to pair with my Qui-Gon.

From ebay. I bought from a seller named nuoyafa-86. Price is cheap, needed a small amount of clean up, but nothing crazy. Really happy with it, enough that I bought a second head from them to paint at some point down the line.
