Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

This is one of my all time favorite films. This was the movie that got me into Universal Horror. I love that a couple of you are making customs, please post pics when you're done!

Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

Well Jim and Erin, It's really nice to get some traffic on this thread. Thanks for popping in!

Jim, you can have Bud and Lou pieces, that is, as soon as Mr Barlow completes the sculpts and puts them up for sale. Here is a shot of the sculpts which are being made.

Erin, I also was introduced to the Universal Monsters due to this wonderful film. I remains in my opinion the best Horror/Comedy motion picture I have seen.

Hey jom !

Thanks bud.

It would be great to get these heads done.

What are you using for bodies ?

Oh man and clothes !!!!!! :gah:

I agree! It's not completely ridiculous but still has enough humor and charm to be called a comedy. Scared me as a kid to be quite honest. I used to be afraid of the Wolf Man. It's funny how things turn out.

Jim, I'm not a 100% on which bodies I will be using. These will really be my first custom figures so I am not really that familiar with the choices I have available to me. Lou was 5'5" tall which would translate to roughly 11" or slightly under. Bud was 5'8" so for him I am thinking the short sideshow buck which were used for Luke Skywalker figures.

Of course, whatever I use for Lou will have to be fattened up quite a bit and maybe shortened by cutting down the legs and arms.

If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear what they are.

As for the costumes, I think I will take a stab at making them myself. I'm not really that great with a needle and thread, especially in this scale, but I figure with enough time for trial and error and a lot of patience I might be able to pull it off. If you look at the pic below you can see that their uniforms are two different shades, Bud's is a bit darker than Lou's. I think for the delivery hats the Brando "Wild One" figure has a good one that comes with it if I can track two down. If not, I'll also have to take a stab at making them myself.

Again, if you have any suggestions I'm all ears.

Yeah, Erin, When I was a kid the part that scared me most was when Lou went into Talbot's room with the suitcase and we, the audience, know he is in deep trouble while he is oblivious to it. When a character knows as much as the audience does, it is not half as compelling as when the audience knows more than the character knows.

Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

YES. Plus Talbot's growling was so unnerving to me. It actually kind of still is when I watch it today, because it taps into that fear I originally experienced as a child. I also feared the scene in which Lou is reading Dracula's description and the candle moves, or even when the coffin is just opening a little. This absolutely proves that gore is no substitute for monsters or creepy scenes.

Hey Moe... Hey Larry...

Sorry, I had to get that Three Stooges reference out of the way...

I really love that resin kit, I've seen it many times before, but not this particular shot. I'm glad you have one. The sculpts are very good especially Bud but Lou just isn't quite right. I think it is the expression on his face.

You said you can have the costumes made hand tailored and I would be interested in how much that would cost. It sure would save me much time and trouble once I get the heads and bodies. So any info on that would be appreciated!

As for the heads, Mr. Barlow, on this site, is the guy to contact. He has been very busy for the past month with Halloween. He says he is involved with the effects end of the entertainment business. Here is a link to his website:

Maybe if you drop him a line about the sculpts and your interest in them, it may speed the production process.

One question for you...

How am I doing? How is my stuff looking? I really want to do justice to this display. I really love this film and I really love this comedy duo. It always makes me smile when I watch it

Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

Your Sign is Dead on love it...Love everything your doing...This film I still watch till this day, and it is a funny story because My grandfather turned me onto this when we use to watch prejector film on white screen when I was age 10 and laughed my AO! I once in awhile pop in the DVD because sometimes I have trouble sleepin, and this film puts me in coma late at night...Weird as it may sound, it relaxes me. But I am glad your a fan like me.

As for the Kit sculpts, they are ok...There could be better, and I am surprised Sideshow did not have the rights to relased this duo since they are universal and they have the rights. They done Glen Strange which is my favorite frankenstein, Wolfman, dracula, but no A&C.

Now for name Moe...I named my English bulldog that and I am also a fan of the stooges which I have a tattoo...And besides for past 16 years I called everyone moe and became a worldwide trend.lol
So there ya have it.
Keep up the great work...I stumbled upon the horror forum because I usually go to Customs, general, and sale and trade. But I love classic horror and new horror.

Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

Hey Moe... Thanks for giving my stuff the once over. It's always good to have a set of eyes other than your own to look over things. Especially when those eyes belong to someone who has seen this film as many countless times as you have. I guess I am far from alone in my love for this classic.

My guess as to why Sideshow never made these figures is that there might have been trouble obtaining likeness rights from the estates of Abbott and Costello which is different from having the rights to the Universal Monsters. That is one possibility. The other thing is that I don't know how successful their other comedy figures like Get Smart, Monty Python, and Hogans Heros were.

I once wrote to Sideshow and asked about them maybe making a line of classic comedians like Martin and Lewis, Chaplin, The Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, The Marx Brothers, W C Fields etc. They said they had no plans like that at that point in time. I still think it is a great idea because these guys still have enormous fan bases. I just don't know if their fan bases are into buying figures.

Thanks again, Moe, for looking in!

Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

I hear ya... I Also collect those big head statues called ESCO and have everyone you mention. I love to also get a great set of honeymooners.

Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

I remember those ESCO statues, I always thought they were cool. They would be great for a bar or something.

I have completed the easels for the Dracula and Frankenstein placards. Here are a few shots:

Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

And here are some shots of Frankie with the easel for scale

Hey Jim,

We need to get in contact with Russ Lukish (His screen name on this site is Mr. Barlow). Maybe write him an E-mail or a PM and express your interest in his Abbott and Costello sculpts. Here is a link to his website:

Yeah, the more people who express an interest the better. He has some sculpts done, apparently, should be easy to cast them up if he's finalized them.

Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

Yeah, Sean... The sculpts look almost ready.

Costello looks just about done but Abbott looks to be still just a little rough. However, I would take them as is, they look to be good enough for me.

Re: Abbott and Costello meet . . .

For those interested in the Abbott and Costello sculpts...

I contacted Mr. Barlow (Russ) this week and he promptly responded. He is very busy working on Men In Black III so he is unable to work on the sculpts at the present time. He did assure me that they will be coming but has no time frame for their completion. The good news is that they will be made eventually!

We all know real life work and life trumps this little hobby. We will all have to be patient.
