The nominations are out. A few surprises: The Reader getting more attention then Revolutionary Road, RDJ best supporting actor for Tropic Thunder, Clint Eastwood with no nominations, "The Boss" not nominated for best song, Melissa Leo nominated best actress, same with Richard Jenkins for actor.

This is not a "The Dark Knight got screwed" thread so, please, no constant complaining about Bale, Freeman, Gyllenhaal, Ecthart, Cain, Oldman, Nolan, Zimmer/Newton Howard, The Dark Knight and whoever else is overlooked not getting nominated :peace

The biggest surprise for me was the sudden love for The Reader. It's been dismissed by critics, guilds, and awards completely. Now all of a sudden today it's the toast of the town. Certainly not deserving of a best picture and it's absurd Daldry got a director nod for it. Then I saw that it was a Weinstein film and it all made sense. That guy wh0res with the best of them come Oscar time.

I love Richard Jenkins getting some love for The Visitor. Very deserving performance.

Eddie Marsen should be in instead of Robert Downey Jr.

The costume design nominations are really weird as well.

Finally the 2 best foreign films didn't make it this year because of the ancient voting system the acedemy uses for this category.

edit: Interesting side note. There have only been 3 films in history that were nominated by all of the guilds yet didn't get an Oscar nomination. The Dark Knight became the 4th today.

A few surprises in there and glad to see Ledger and Downey Jr. get a nod, I am also kinda relieved that Dark Knight did not get all sorts of other nominations, it just wasn't that deserving and there were so many other great performances and movies last year.

I'm thrilled In Bruges got an original screenplay nomination. It's the best movie no one saw last year.

Still havent seen it

:lecture True to dat.

Check your PM.

Eastwood and Nolan got screwed.

:lecture Yes he did :D

I completely agree with you. I was surprised by both nominations. I was half expecting to see Kate Winslet nominated in both lead and supporting (for Revolutionary Road and the Reader respectively) as she was the Golden Globes. Kind of surprised Revolutionary Road received no recognition beyond costumes. I would have at least expected an adapted screenplay nod.

I am a bit surprised about Eastwood, Nolan and the Wrestler not receiving more recognition. Rourke pretty much made the Wrestler, so I'm not surprised he received the only nod, but thought it might get a screenplay nomination. I think Nolan could have received a nod for directing, but at least TDK is in there for cinematography.

Yeah the Nolan omission is shocking. Especially since he was one of the 5 selected by the Directors guild themselves. They usually line up 5 for 5 come Oscar time.

My idea of winners below, in green....

and yes, I highlighted 3 actors in supporting roles, because they are all deserving.

So you'd give Wall*E best original screenplay but Kung Fu Panda best animated feature?

I don't get the Hoffman nod for supporting actor either by the acadmey. He's clearly a lead role and should in no way be considered for supporting actor.

Yes, because Kung-Fu Panda isn't nominated for best OG screenplay, or else i'd give it that too.

To me, Kung-Fu Panda was way better than WALL-E. But out of the OG screenplay nominations, I say give it to WALL-E.

My picks in bold. It was a toss up for original screenplay for me between In Bruges and Wall*E. I think in the end it'll go to Wall*E though.
