Re: OFFICIAL JAMES BOND THREAD

Why is this even a discussion....Fleming NEVER intended 007 to be black , why mess with the formula that HE created :thud:

A black Bond is not and never will be the same character , its that simple.

Truth is that Fleming disliked Connery after seeing "Dr No" but warmed up to him eventually. He prolly would think that some Bonds like Moonraker wasnt the Bond he created (but would shut up cuz it would be financially stupid to trash talk his income , hed get a good piece of the pie I bet)

The first part I totally agree on!!

As for Connery it was the IDEA of him he was opposed to. He did not want them to cast him as Bond because he thought he was too burly and Scottish and rough to play Bond. But as soon as he saw the film he completely changed his mind and loved him so much he wrote Scottish - Swiss ancestry into the character's back story.

Re: OFFICIAL JAMES BOND THREAD

He prolly had warmed up to him more when FRWL came along ;)

He also was charmed by Andress and wrote her into a book (OHMSS I think).....but what man wasn't charmed by her back then lol ?

Re: OFFICIAL JAMES BOND THREAD

Moonraker was awesome

I liked Moonraker also...My favorite Roger Moore Bond film was Octopussy...

I'll bet you guys were young when you saw those.

Not a dig on you guys, I was young when I saw Man with the Golden Gun so consequently I like that one, but it really isn't a good Bond. When I was really young I thought Goldfinger was so boring, then as I got older I came to realize just how outstanding that film is.

Moonraker is just too jokey, too silly, too implausible, made Jaws a bufoon, had a terribly soft villain, a lot of forced humor, and a score that could put you to sleep. The opening scene tells the whole story: started off incredible, ended as a ridiculous joke.

This was the main problem for me--- Jaws was fantastic in The Spy Who Loved Me, and although it has its cheesy moments (as most of the Moore Bond films do) it was and is still my favourite... Moonraker had potential, especially the bone-chilling moment of Jaws in the Brazil carnivale with his removal of the giant head to reveal his ominous form... but he's turned into a "good guy" due to his popularity and one of the really great henchmen was completely neutered.

Moonraker was the beginning of the end--- but it was Octopussy when Moore really started to show his age and A View To A Kill (although I love it for so many silly reasons) was ghastly for him as he was far too old to be Bond (see Connery in the same year, '83, as Octopussy when he did Never Say Never Again... Connery was getting too old when he came back for Diamonds Are Forever in '71)...

Great fun to watch, but each Bond has a shelf live. Brosnan reached his which I'm glad they handed it off-- Craig's got maybe a six to seven year window and then they'll have to find another one.

Not that young...I wish that was my first Bond...But I said for a Roger Moore film I liked it...LALD and MWTGG were really dark bond films when you compare to Connery ....My favorite Bond film of all believe it or not is On Her Majesty's Secret Service...The whole Bond thing in love threw me for a loop but I liked it...When she drove off in the beginning and Lazenby says to the camera "This never happened to the other fella"....I cracked up....The story was great and it was the only theme song without any vocals...Bond being emotional was great...I loved Casino Royale(Craig not Niven...LOL) and License to Kill....I loved all the Connery Bonds but his last 2 DAF and NSNA were his worst...JMHO

I agree with everything you said except the Man with the golden gun, I think that's pretty solid bond film

Re: OFFICIAL JAMES BOND THREAD

I enjoy Moonraker for what it is. It isn't the best, but parts of it are still decent.

I disagree with that. The score was great, especially during the space scenes. Barry's scores were always the best.

Agree to disagree. Have you heard all of Barry's scores for Bond? I have them all and listened to them relentlessly -- avid soundtrack collector here since I was 9 years old. You can't compare Moonraker to FRWL or Goldfinger or even YOLT. Even compare how slow the 007 theme became (Not the Bond theme, the 007 theme) during the boat chase, then listen to FRWL's version or Thunderball's version or DAF's version. Barry slowed down his tempo considerably in later years like all great composers. It just didn't have the same energy as his earlier work. I like high energy for action pics. That may be where we differ in our preference.

Re: OFFICIAL JAMES BOND THREAD

Yes I have them all. Barry's style changed beetween Connery's and Moore's era. In the Connery movies his music was more charged and even harsh. He used more brass in them. Then when Moore movies started coming out he already moved to writing sweeping melodies for strings which sort of became his trademark. Like you I prefer his earlier work on Bond - Goldfinger and OHMSS are my favourites, but I enjoy his later style and wouldn't say Moonraker was a score that puts you to sleep.

Re: OFFICIAL JAMES BOND THREAD

Don't think I've ever known anyone who has the complete Bond soundtrack collection! Good man! :clap

And yes, OHMSS is an excellent score, one of the best, but I think my favorite, although it does change, is Goldfinger -- the original record is fairly limited, I wish I had the full score for that film.

Re: OFFICIAL JAMES BOND THREAD

Do you have the 2003 expanded cd? Pretty much all of Barry's scores where expanded, with the exception of Moore's ones.

I TOTALLY AGREE! OHMSS and GF!

Re: OFFICIAL JAMES BOND THREAD

No, I didn't even know. :slap

Thanks for the link, I'll have to get this for myself (Xmas gift :))

If you have all the expanded ones, which are the best? Goldfinger, YOLT, and OHMSS I'm guessing?

Yes, the ones you mentioned are the best. I'd recommend The Living Daylights as well.
