I think the final production version looks fine (on the right).

I still think it looks off. They got the face shape wrong as well, and the paint apps are looking soft.

The key thing is that will be a good thing for battle-damaged 85, since the paint apps on that need to be well done.

How long will this version be delayed now I wonder

There is no way HT is going to mess this up. Who knows, this maybe get delayed another year or two...can you imagine ....2023 :slap

HT usually does batches, with secondary batches coming out weeks after the first that can have differences. Depending on what they do, this might be more a 3-6 month delay, but nobody really knows.

Hard to say. I mean they will also use the same sculpt for the Quantumsuit version. They could simply do a massive run of the Mk50 sculpt or whatever one they use and paint them accordingly.

Plus the BD version was not shown on that coming soon picture.

They'll probably just slot in something else while they get more moulding of the Mk50 or whatever sculpt made. Maybe that won't effect the BD timing at all.

I'd be fine with that for the regular version but the BD doesn't look right with a helmet since it's torn off "in canon," so it's just a helmet placed in the middle of a torn apart collar, where the head sculpt should be.

Looks fine me also. Not the best but so far from the worst.

Yeah I dont really see what all the fuss is about, go back and look at the RDJ heads from 2009 to 2014. The most valid argument is the change from the prototype, that should have been announced 6 months ago. I dont think this looks that bad though.

Why use the mark 50 sculpt? Tony is visibly older looking when he wore the 85.

Because he actually looks younger with this Mk85 sculpt, aside from looking far worse.

The Mk 50 looks better and older, therefore better fitting the Mk85 timeline.

Screenshot from Justin's review of the Mk85. He said he prefers the previous Mk50 sculpt which is apparently what we're going to get as the replacement of the Mk85 sculpt. I dunno, I still prefer the new Mk85 sculpt.

I can see what they were going for, and if it would have looked like the proto on the left it would be fine. The final on the right however, is comically bad. If ppl are happy with it, that's fine in their case but as someone who pays these prices for the accuracy of the headsculpts I wouldn't touch that figure. Again, my opinion (I am pickier being a 3D Artist myself).

I am really nervous about this figure.

The regular 85 gold color was changed from a dark gold shade to a standard IM bright yellow.

This figure might look very bright an shiny, even with some battle damage.

Objectively, these are clearly different representations of the same character. It comes down to what each person prefers. To me, the new sculpt is not as good and not as close of a likeness. I appreciate the aged and more weathered look they were going for, but would prefer the Mark L HS that is closer to RDJ. I would be happy with the Mark L sculpt with more of the 85 paint with the gray hair. I doubt we’ll get an entirely new sculpt. That doesn’t make business sense and would add a huge delay. I suspect we’ll see a repainted Mark L HS. While not everyone loved the Mark L HS, it did not receive this kind of backlash. I personally thought it was a good likeness.

My wife at the end of the day 'tolerates' my collection, but I ask her opinion on figures since she isn't a fanboy like me, and can give an unbiased opinion. She is also a fine artist and a graphic designer, and her attention to painting even miniatures is amazing.

That being said, aside from a few angles, she felt the new head sculpt really didn't look like RDJ, and was a downgrade from what came with the 50. She watched a few videos and made some good arguments about jaw and elements of the face. They tried to make him look older/thinner, but they changed the bone structure too much to where the likeness started disappearing.

She also noted that sometimes people wait for something so long, they will convince themselves that it is good even if deep down they know its disappointing. Just human nature. Then she said do I really need another IM....lol.

That's why the new sculpt needs to look older than the mark 50 sculpt.

Yeah that's what I said. It doesn't. It looks younger to me.

Anyway it doesn't matter. They're changing it and I personally think that's a good decision. The people who were disappointed were clearly in the majority.

If you're spending $400+ on a figure for the final Iron Man armour then it better not be a big departure from the prototype image you pre-ordered against.
