I read and collect comics sporadically, there's just way too many to buy and read. Not to mention the current prices for a single book. :thud:

From Marvel I'm reading Dark Ages, Star Wars, SW The High Republic, SW Han Solo & Chewbacca, Captain Carter, Captain America & X-Men. From DC I'm reading DC Vs Vampires, Green Lantern, Dark Knights of Steel, and Trial of the Amazons.

What are you reading? Any suggestions?

I've been reading Coda lately. It's a pretty fun, zany, fantasy series. Definitely worth checking out. I used to have a weekly pull list at my LCS, but had to give that up. I somehow have never read Sandman, but I've got the full collection on my dresser, ready to read.

A couple years ago a buddy of mine who lives in Japan had to get rid of his comics because his mom is moving back to the UK, so he gave me all of his old Grendel comics that we used to read back in high school. It was fun reliving that whole series. So much crazy and awesome.

After finishing Saga, which was a wild ride, I went back to the trusty Bat with Joker War, which has failed to keep my very interested.

Three Jokers was pretty fun.

I don't read any new American comics and haven't for about five years. I do buy Marvel Omnibuses, mostly Spider-Man, but also have Punisher Max and Captain America (the Brubaker run). I do have a collection of Batman, Superman, Shazam etc TPBs, but haven't bought any in a while.
I do actively read manga, and I am working my through the Berserk Deluxe editions (half-way through vol 10) and the newly re-released Fist of the North Start (vol 3). On the Shonen Jump app, I am reading actively One Punch Man, Spy X Family, Dr Stone (which just finished), Dragon Ball Super and Hunter X Hunter (when a new volume comes out every 3-4 years).

I read/re-read already completed works (including older mangas). Right now, I'm currently reading through the Absolute Editions of Neil Gaiman's, "The Sandman" again. The Sandman is perhaps my favorite comic series, as the literature is an existentialist masterpiece that's brimmed with themes of morality and the consequences that follow from one's actions. The panels of the Absolute Editions also look awesome in larger format compared to the TPBs that I've owned for years.

I also read novels. I'm rather late to this, but I've been getting into a lot of Stephen King for the past couple of years. I plan on starting Bag of Bones sometime next week.

Aside from the odd mini here and there, at this moment, I'm pulling:
  • Darth Vader
  • X-Men
  • Immortal X-Men (when it starts)
Mostly for completionism reasons. I try to keep up with the entire X-Line, and I check every week for appearances of my few favourites, but that's it. I haven't read Batman since I dropped King's run, I stopped keeping track of Green Lantern after Morrison left, and so on. I look at the solicits every month for some new indies, but after Decorum ended, nothing caught my eye. I do buy the odd Hellboy one-shot too.

If anything, I'm trying to buy the Omnibuses I'm after. As of right now, I'm sitting on an incomplete Absolute Sandman set and it's making me really anxious. But the Fantastic Four and Doctor Strange collections are coming along nicely. X-Men is too big, so I'm taking it slow.

As I've dropped tv shows (I still want to finish one long-running and concluded series, and I do still follow about 5 shows, depending on when they air), apart from a few 20-minute anime and the odd movie night, I'm reading more in general. I want to do a chronological X-Men readathon at some point, from the 60s until Secret Wars, but I have to schedule it properly. I ordered Wolfe's New Sun Hardbacks the other week, so I'll start reading them in about a month. I'm pretty pumped.

TL;DR I'm just interested to see where the X-Men are going. Whatever the faults of the current narrative, at least they're doing something and Krakoa is a fun setting; it reminds me of Pandora. I'm looking forward to the Hellfire Gala of this year, as it could be more fun than last time's.

Whoa ... I paused when they did a while back, forgot they restarted and didn't realize they're done. Thanks for the reminder!

I sampled some Marvel and DC a few years ago after being out for decades; nothing really held my attention although it was fun to catch up with Daredevil and Black Widow. Did read a bunch of Image titles:

  • Black Science
  • Deadly Class
  • Death Or Glory
  • Descender
  • East Of West
  • Injection
  • Invincible
  • Low
  • Rumble
  • Saga
  • Secret Weapons
  • Tokyo Ghost
  • Trees
One thing I've noticed with a lot of contemporary books -- especially with Image titles -- is that they often start strong then kind of lose their way. Like they need a better editor.

As for Marvel I did enjoy the low key quirkiness of 'Hawkeye' (Fraction + Aja) ...

I've gotta pick up the Black Widow series, a friend of mine says it's a good read.

Want to snag the new Ghost Rider and DC's Endless Winter HC this weekend from my LCS (Not very local when it's an hour and a half away :lol ).

It's pretty slow pacing wise, but I really like the art.

It's worth reading in the sense that you're getting exactly what you'd expect. Decent cape spy-fi with some drama.

Slow pacing is fine when you're dealing with complete runs, but when it's on a single-issue-per month basis, it gets irritating. That's really why comics have fallen off compared to other forms of entertainment. Too slow and too pricey for the amount of amusement they offer. Not to mention the never-ending cyclical stories. I saw a panel of what DC's up to, and I felt supremely sad. At this point I think they should just reboot every 10-20 years if they want to keep the same characters in publication. What they're doing now is just depressing. Marvel's farring better, but still they're facing similar hurdles.

True. I haven't read BW from the beginning so I'll be reading around 15 (?) issues in a row? :lol

I totally agree. That's why a primarily buy collected editions, hardcover, and trades. It's just too expensive.

What I don't like is that there are so many titles out there with storylines that crossover into different books, a person will go broke in one week to get them all.

I liked it better when there was just the one original and best, IMO, X-Men book printed; Uncanny X-Men.

No Extreme X-Men, Young X-Men, All-New X-Men, Extraordinary X-Men, Immortal X-Men, New X-Men, Ultimate X-Men, Super Fantastical X-Men, etc.

Bag of Bones is really good read. Hope you enjoy. It's one that I have revisited. If you are in to audio books, King narrates that one.

The problem is that once they're sold out, you're out of luck unless you're into paying an HT's worth for a picture-book, or they're reprinted. I'm sitting here with my Absolute Sandman Vol 1 whereas all other Volumes have been sold out for the last two months in every bookstore I've ever used, so I'm feeling that sting.

That's really unavoidable at this point. The cast became far too huge. X-Men is its own imprint, more or less. Having a Main Book, a Teen Book, an Edge Book and so on isn't the problem. The issue arises when they're interchangeable, the stories are trite and pacing is glacial.

Me, I'm just angry the X-Office is full of Wolverine stans and they're going to try pushing him and Jean again. I hate that ship with the force of a billion exploding suns, and from the 00s to now I've come to really, truly loathe Wolverine. I'm not ashamed to admit it that were this an AU where I was the head of Disney/Marvel, I'd write an event where Logan is humiliated and tortured for 6 issues straight until he dies so thoroughly that he's written out of the universe. It's petty, but I just can't stand him.

If I miss out then I miss out. It sucks but I'm not going to pay a King's ransom for a comic or a trade.

Agreed, I liked it better when the cast of X-Men consisted of a small number of characters but that went away in the 90s. Stupid 90s. :gah:

While that made for a good love triangle between Jean, Scott, and Logan for a short period; I thought that the relationship between Logan and Mariko was better and more interesting.

Marvel reprints their Omnis every few years, but those DC Absolutes are killing me.

I liked the 90s... Honestly, with the book's premise it makes sense to expand. It simply couldn't keep going like that. What bothers me is that they doubled down on the allegory when it never made much sense, and have basically ruined the lore. Claremont ruined the IP as much as he raised it to new heights. But really, it was Morrison who really drove it to the ground. Well, Claremont was right along for the ride too.

Me, I have an X-Men revamp in my head that I once developed into two different ideas. It's got a great hook, but it's most definitely not reaching its potential. Hickman brought me back in, and the hacks writing the books never let him finish his saga, so now we're stuck with a meandering plot that goes nowhere while they're having fun writing their canon slashficks.

Bah...

I've always hated it. I hate love triangles, soap opera love drama in general, but this takes the cake. I loathe it and I loathe Wolverine too. Unless Jackman comes back and I buy a dolly out of nostalgia, Wolverine's not coming anywhere near my display. Clown Kang with his Clownish Headsculpt has better chances...

Personally I always enjoy it when he comes across Doom and the latter calls him a midget.
