Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

The specs and pics will be interesting. Hopefully they'll tease a TPM Obi Wan and Qui Gon in them too.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

It's releases like this that will kill so many of SSC's 1/6 figs going forward. People jump on the SSC version, only to see HT do the same character a year or so later. You can see that thinking is already hurting figs like the Snowtrooper Commander - a very solid figure that nonetheless could (and possibly will) be topped when HT presuambly releases their proto seen a couple of years ago.

The SSC Maul was really well done, but this one seems - at least in proto - to be another notch better though. The sculpt detail, robes, the paint, all seem a bit better. And then there's the price - Sideshow's figures should aim for a sub-HT level, not at or above, especially for figures that are often second best. People don't like paying more for something that's second best.

Not sure if this has been covered, but I wonder if this will come with the hooded robe if it's DX.

If it comes with a grinning or angry teeth HS.. it's FOTY but which year?

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

It definitely does. Here is a photo someone on this forum took of his figure. I see nothing in the photos of the HT that improves on the SSC version. Even the sculpted tattoos are much less pronounced on the SSC. And that’s disappointing as I need an excuse, other than the accessories, to get the HT version. Maybe I’ll get it and bash the two. Maybe sell the HT figure and keep the cloak and accessories for my SSC. We’ll see if it gets improved.

That’s my photo and I agree. SS Sculpt is pretty damn amazing.

Yeah this pretty much kills off any reason to buy sideshow 1/6 anymore as clearly there is no gentleman's agreement to not double up on figures. Sideshow Maul looks like one of their best figures and still it will be easily toppled. Can't wait to see a HT Jabba next SDCC!

And DX Maul will have a robe, you have the TurdFurgusonsHat guarantee!

I agree, the price is the biggest issue. They shouldn't be charging the same or more for an inferior product. And going toe to toe with HT will just put SS out of the 1/6 business. They should stick to side characters or the Mythos line, stuff HT won't ever touch. I never considered buying the SS Maul because I knew this day would eventually come.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

I'm in the minority I guess but I feel the SS Maul looks more menacing, granted i own him but admittedly I am also someone who upgrades over the slightest improvement and so far I'm not seeing it. I could care less about the speeder bike, if I see a hooded robe that may change my mind.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

Against my better judgement I purchased the SSC Maul on the back of the praise the headsculpt garnered here. I then sold it 6 weeks later and thank god I did.

The likeness was amazing but it has a lifeless expression. That combined with the price, absolutely PITIFUL amount of accessories and the **** raggedy anne floppy body ( that I got on my mine anyway ) really left me scratching my head as to why it was so popular.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

I'm sorry to hear that, mine is able to get into all kinds of extreme poses......although I will admit I don't know how long he can hold the poses before becoming all loosely goosey...which I think wouldn't be too long.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

That face looks great!
The wrinkles in the brow, slightly scrunched nose and angry stare makes this one of the most lifelike sculpts I’ve seen.
No ones knocking SS but this is just on another level.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

The whole DX thing is great but I’m not too happy about those engraved tattoo details. Expressive sneer looks awesome. I’m very interested in how much they’ll put him up for. The Emperor w/throne is $313, a character that might not sell as well as Maul, and if saber-wielding figures are now $260-$270, then factor in his speeder... $$$?

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

There just has to be a single Maul... just like Tarkin. I mean, Maul's too big a seller to limit in a pack with a Speeder.

HT can sell Maul for $250... and still sell the super-pack Maul for $369.99.

Many people here will buy both. Maybe two of each.

I would like to know if this is a true DX or a deluxe emperor type situation. Also if they want to sell multiple mauls to folks that robe better drape properly. An alternate sculpt wouldn't hurt either but I really dig the one shown.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

Could be all...

DX: speeder, ball, cloak, bracelet, several lightsabers, 2 heads - $369.99

Deluxe: speeder + cloaked Maul - $319.99

Regular: no cloak Maul - $259.99

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

Soooo glad I didn’t buy the SS version.
