Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

HT has also sculpted the tats, very interesting.

I don’t own any of the SSC versions, but do their HS capture anything like this ..simply beautiful

There is definitely something going on with tunic tails, articulation perhaps

Looks fantastic. This is the only PT figure I'll be picking up... aside from Jar-Jar. (seriously.)

Looks like wires in his costume, same as Sideshow.

As for the overall figure, I just don't see anything leaps beyond the Sideshow figure, yet.

Boots are the one thing standing out, they look a bit more realistic on HT.

It definitely does. Here is a photo someone on this forum took of his figure. I see nothing in the photos of the HT that improves on the SSC version. Even the sculpted tattoos are much less pronounced on the SSC. And that’s disappointing as I need an excuse, other than the accessories, to get the HT version. Maybe I’ll get it and bash the two. Maybe sell the HT figure and keep the cloak and accessories for my SSC. We’ll see if it gets improved.

This is awesome and I’m still getting it but disappointed HT went with sculpted tats, I expected more from them.

I didn't like the two piece gloves.

I disagree, even with the crappy display pic of the HT one , the sculpt expression is spot on to the film, there are more sculpted areas in the expression, especially around the brows . This is fine and thanks for posting but the paint seems a little bland and the mouth looks a tad weird and the head seems a bit thin..but maybe that’s just my view :dunno

Here’s a closeup

Even at a angle, HT has more sculpted details

Yeah I’ve always said the SSC Maul’s Head seemed too thin and undersized. Save for the sculpted tats, I think HT’s Maul is better. People weren’t too keen on the Emperor prototype when it was first revealed, but HT knocked it out of the Park. I’m certain HT can make this the best Maul ever released in 1/6.

I hope so. There’s not much else I want this year at SDCC, so would be nice if this one turned out to be the ultimate Maul.

Based on your comments, it sounds like we're discussing different POVs. What slikkerias and I are getting at is that the production of the HT figure does not look any improved over the Sideshow, costume quality looks very similar, headsculpt quality similar.

What you're driving at is the choice of sculpt expression, and there I would agree Sideshow and HT are quite different, if stripped of paint, Sideshow would look fairly neutral, where HT clearly looks more squinted and angry. If that's what you're after, then HT is definitely better.

I was just expecting HT to look like a 1:1 of Ray Park compared to Sideshow's figure, but it looks very much like a figure and lacks the lifelike qualities of most HT figures.

Again, I'm making these judgements off con shots and a single pose, so that opinion could change, it could be an early prototype and far from finished and will differ by the time we saw it.

Let's not forget how bad the Emperor looked at cons and before the final product was actually revealed, I was actually looking for cheap eBay deals on Sideshow Emperor before we saw the actual product pics.

No I get what he was referring too, but he stated that he didn’t see any improvement at all between the two nd IMO , I still disagree I think the details on this sculpt look more defined than the SSC version, not saying there is anything wrong with the SSC , but there is a difference between the two

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

So far quality wise they’re about the same. More bits are gonna come with the HT Maul, and a cloak I’m sure. Both expressions display great. Looks like we’re going to have two awesome Mauls to choose from or display both.

I’d like to se some more and better straight on shots of that sculpt though.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

^ Agreed, both awesome Maul's both with flaws, collectors with options. Sideshow with spare HT parts may be the route for many with this likely being a pricey DX, you could probably upgrade Sideshow within $300 or so, where this as a DX will likely be close to $400-$500 if I had to guess.

Looking at the close up, the eyes appear sculpted, doesn't look like eye gap where the PERS type system would be.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

Hmm so far, based on the limited views we have, I feel like the HT head doesnt match the intensity of the SSC.. But that opinion could change as we see better views of this figure.

Agree. But we only have really bad photos, so we’ll see...

Re: Hot Toys - MMS - The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul and Sith Speeder

The tats around his eyes are definitely thicker than the SSC and if you look closely there is a nice shade of red highlights accented in the black lines of the tats giving it a more realistic feel whereas the SSC sculpt is just a painted flat black on the tattoos

I always thought there was a restrained intensity in the expression myself. I think it’s gonna be a blast seeing/taking side by side pics of these.
