Just caught the final episode of Icons Unearthed. Main takeaways:
  • Lucas procrastinated on the AOTC script, well into preproduction, and Jonathan Hales ended up writing it himself. Lucas gave him the beginning and the end and he made up the rest.
  • When Anthony Daniels read it he threw it across the room!
  • It was Hales who insisted on less Jar Jar.
  • The droid factory sequence was an afterthought when they decided there wasn't enough action.

Also, I never knew David Lynch almost directed ROTJ, or that Lucas considered the ROTS final duel so pivotal he brought in Spielberg as a virtual second unit director.

So that means we can’t blame George anymore for “I hate sand” and “I wish I could just wish away my feelings”? :monkey2

In Icons: Unearthed Hales was scathing of Ewan's performance in AOTC, saying he phoned it in and could barely suppress a smirk.

I actually thought he smirked more in TPM.

Weird if he singled out Ewan. Probably everyone gave career-worst performances in those films.

I liked Watto. He was interesting and he was more in line with the interesting side characters in the original trilogy.

ROTS gave us younger Mon Mothma. Genevieve O'Reilly would not have been been put into Andor without ROTS. So there's that as a small blessing.

I've always felt that Ahmed Best should have been double cast. As a human Jedi once it was clear Jar Jar Binks was being phased out due to fan backlash. While I really don't like Star Trek Discovery, one of the actresses who couldn't handle being in the makeup anymore as one of the alien characters on the bridge, they just recast her into a human role so she could keep her job, I thought that was actually a pretty decent thing to do.

The critical and fan backlash against Best ( not his fault ) looked pretty rough. I mean this was the chance of a lifetime and it turned into a nightmare for this guy.

That scene with Dooku is brilliant. I love how it shows the duplicitous nature of the Sith, always edging for an advantage, always teasing with half-truths to turn people to their views.

"[It's] beyond my pay grade. I say the words, do the thing. I do love the version of, you can be anyone you want to be, but I also love the version where you can rectify wrongs and can’t help what you’re born into." - Daisy Ridley

That second sentence is pretty much all I ever want to hear from actors these days, lol.

Aotc may be bad but it’ll never be TLJ bad. Also ROTs still remains the greatest Star Wars film ever. Discuss!
