Re: The Amazing Spider-Man
I just got back from seeing it. Enjoyable, but I definitely had a few issues with it.

My hopes for the sequel:
Overall, I enjoyed it, but I had a lot of issues that were inexcusable to me, especially because they were things that the Raimi films got right. It almost seems like they went out of the way to distance themselves from the previous movies, to the point that it hurt the flow of this one. I think that as it is, it works as a good palette cleanser for potentially better Spider-Man movies, but at this time Raimi's Spider-Man universe is still MY Spider-Man universe.

Things I liked:
Spoiler:
- Andrew Garfield is perfectly fine as Peter Parker, though maybe a little too cocky out-of-the-costume.
- The chemistry between Peter & Gwen, much better than the Peter/MJ chemistry of the Raimi movies.
- All of the actors involved, particularly Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, and Denis Leary.
- Home-made web shooters!!!
- The cinematography was great, and the viewer really got more of a feel to swinging around NYC.
- Great Stan Lee cameo, maybe the best one yet! I wish that scene had gone on a little longer though...
- The suit worked fine for me, even with no attempt to explain how he made it.
Things I didn't like:
Spoiler:
- Forgettable music score
- The entire mystery subplot with Peter's parents and Oscorp, just unnecessary.
- No J. Jonah Jameson??? C'mon Sony, that was inexcusable! If anything, a small scene with him "naming" Spider-Man was all that was needed, get JK Simmons back.
- No Harry Osborn? I can understand not wanting to have Norman in the first movie, but would it have really hurt the plot to have some reference to Harry?
- Apparently in this movie, nobody grieves for poor old Uncle Ben and they just get on with their lives like nothing happened? No funeral and zero ramifications of his death.
- Lizard design/voice didn't work for me at all, but I did like that they worked his regeneration abilities into the movie.
- The cheesy scene with the cranes moving into position. To top it off, a helicopter flies overhead and puts a spotlight directly on Spider-man, all Spidey needed to do was attach a webline to the helicopter and he could have been flown to Oscorp tower? I get that they wanted to go for the train scene in Spider-Man 2, with the civilians helping Spidey, but it didn't work for me at all in this movie.
- The last line about "Those are the best kind of promises to break." Completely out of character for Peter, and downplayed the entire emotional impact of George Stacy's death. Part 2 should have continued his struggle with distancing himself from Gwen out of respect for her dad.
My hopes for the sequel:
Spoiler:
I really hope they use part 2 to further develop the relationship with Gwen, and hold true to her destiny in the final act of part 3, as it could really be an epic scene in film as it was in the comics all those years ago. Goblin needs to come about in part 2, but not become a major player until part 3. I'm hoping the main villain for 2 is another Spidey villain that hasn't appeared in a movie yet, but honestly don't have a clue who they could use other than Green Goblin. I really hope they don't go the route that the ASM videogame took and introduce characters like Rhino as a human/rhino hybrid developed by Oscorp using Connors testing...
