Re: The Man of Steel

Bond theme never changed, just updated with the times.

:lecture

I may feel differently when I see it but right now I'm thinking no John Williams theme = a fail.

Bond without that music isn't Bond*, I fear likewise with Superman.

*yeah I know Casino Royale only used it right at the end but still.

Re: The Man of Steel

Why would it be in the film? This is a new series...it needs new music.

That's like an Indiana Jones movie without the Indy Theme. The Superman March is one of the most beautiful and iconic scores in the world. I'm hoping it's somewhere in the film, if not just in the opening credits.

Like JWilliams heavily influenced and stole from Holst and Stravinsky and others for Star Wars :)
I cant remember if his Superman or Indiana Jones music was very similar to any classical music?

I liked Ottman's score a lot from Superman Returns. Not just the Williams pieces, but the entire score i thought was really nice.

Arguments can be made that all scores are influenced by classical scores of the past :lol

Re: The Man of Steel

Oh I know, just the Star Wars music is famous for people talking & debating about the Holst and Stravinsky influences. I personally don't have a problem with it as the Star Wars music is really beautiful. Same with Superman and Indiana. Im not holding it against JWilliams at all. I like Williams music a lot :)

I'll give you that. As long as the score is amazing, regardless of composer, I can live with it. Seems like scores nowadays can be amazing scores, like The Dark Knight, but lack that theme that keeps you humming it days later

Re: The Man of Steel

If it doesn't fit the film, then they shouldn't try and shoehorn it in. Just to make fan's happy? They could go with something similar.

Reminds me of the people wanting the Elfman themes in Nolan's Batman films. The youtube fan videos show how much of a horrible idea that is! :lol

Re: The Man of Steel

The Williams theme is tied to the Reeve/Donner movies. But even Singer, who was trying to recapture that vibe, didn't use it much. I love it and it is "Superman" for me, but Snyder would be insane to use it at all.

That could well be. But as yet we don't know what kind of tone this film will have. If the Williams theme wouldn't suit it, fair enough. Although I would question the wisdom of taking any dramatic change of tone with Superman. We'll see.

Edit- actually I should clarify I really don't know much about this film apart from whose in it and whose who, so maybe we do know the kind of tone they'll be going for.

Re: The Man of Steel

LOVE TDK score!!! ive worn that CD out to death:) I have the limited edition version that comes in that slip case & book with extra remix CD. just a great great score. should of won the Oscar, but because of a mix up, it got disqualified. And love the Begins and Inception scores. I can listen to them all day:) Inception would of won the Oscar, but Trent and Atticus deserved it.

Yeah I have that LE version in the slipcase. That was a good buy. Its a great coffee table book. They definitely should have won the Oscar that year despite the technicalities that prevented them from being nominated. Also agree on the Social Network score. Trent and Atticus definitely deserved it. That's another score I have on constant rotation.

Anyhow, as classic as the original Superman score is, I am open to something new. I don't feel this is the same as say...a different Star Wars or Indy score. The reason I say this is because both SW and Indy originated on the screen. Despite all the other mediums they may pop up in, the films are "THE cannon". The music that was tied to those original films is apart of that cannon. Therefore if more SW or Indy movies are made I would expect the same original score (or something very, very similar) unless they intend to reboot the universe.

"Man of Steel" is a reboot of the Superman film universe. Its a different way of looking at the same concept. Therefore changing the score (while not necessary) is acceptable if it will fit the final film.

Re: The Man of Steel

^ And it's not like they're completely changing the design.

You can still deffinitely see the "Superman" in the suit..

Re: The Man of Steel

I'm pretty sure Tyler Bates will be scoring and not Zimmer. At least that's the plan right now, but there's still a lot of time for that to change or for it to be a dual effort, ala BATMAN BEGINS.

Please don't, just please dont....please. My heart trembled a little bit from seeing that. I had not idea they had a fully realized photography of NICHOLAS CAGE putting on a TIM BURTON INSPRIED SUPERMAN suit......

Re: The Man of Steel

I didn't like the suit when I saw the final designs and costume test shots... But it's actually grown on me since and I think folks will be much more tolerant when they see it in motion and on screen. The cape is amazing.

BTW, Nolan also had a lot of input on this look, too.

Still... This is :lol

It's weird and rubber. And I have seen it in motion too. The Cape is waay too heavy. Zod's design on the other hand is interesting. Very Sci-Fi, very Halo. But this does not feel like Superman. And half the takes can't be used at the moment because of the fake folds in the rubber body suit. Cavill is heavily padded. Thank god they have enough time to paint out/digitally replace parts of the suit.
