Spoiler:By themselves? I thought they were average, but then I thought they actually stood out quite a lot whenever Ultron took over one or had them carry out his schemes. Crazy as this sounds, I also thought that they held a stronger presence in the final act compared to Ultimate Ultron, especially considering how much we saw him talking through them. That bit when he was making his speeches as he body-swapped between different Sentries felt like they were ripped straight of the comics which made me so happy.
Mind you, this was from someone who wasn't really expecting much from the Sentries yet I found myself liking them. I mean for me, the Sentries felt less like foot soldiers and more like vacant host bodies for Ultron while his bigger forms (Ultron Prime and Ultimate Ultron) distracted the heroes from his actual schemes. Sure they weren't interesting by themselves (the blue ones), but whenever they glowed red, they might as well have served as another "form" for Ultron himself.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seemed like Ultron never referred to them as a form of "other" and kept referring to them as if they represent his collective self; which made them feel more like multiple copies of himself than necessarily being an independent army like the Chitauri. That's what made the Sentries stand out for me, less as "foot soldiers" and more as "multiple versions of the bad guy". It's what convinced me to hunt down the various Sentry Prime figures since I actually felt Ultron's presence more through them in the final act as if they collectively represented him ("All of you against all of me."). Admittedly, because of this I had even less interest in getting the normal blue ones and only decided to get single versions of the red Sentry Prime, so maybe that's a bad thing for HT considering that I only want the red ones.
That's just me of course, and I could be projecting too much on them and how their role played out in the film but that's how I viewed them. I mean, let's not forget the fact that it was various Sentry Primes that stole the vibranium, crashed the city as Wanda was distracted by the "dying" Ultimate Ultron, and how it served as Ultron's last body in his final moments.
Spoiler:Ultron sums it up nicely after Thor's "Is that all you've got?" line, when he says "I've got... ME!"
Also after The Vision disconnects their collective network, they still act as hosts for Ultron. This made me think that each drone holds a local copy of the Ultron personality that takes over when needed, but most of the time after the disconnect the now individual, unco-ordinated drones just follow their last received instruction from the network.
