I can see why people like the Final Cut. It boils down to a matter of what speaks to one personally at the end of the day!

Robot Dreams - 8/10

Charming, dialogue-free 2D animated film that deals with loneliness, companionship, loss and love with a dog and a robot. Funny and moving. Lots of little 80’s references as well as beautiful moments from the 2 main characters - not to mention the myriad of background characters inhabiting New York. Care and love were obviously poured into this wonderful antidote to the usual churned out, hyperactive animated fare. Take the kids. If you don’t have kids, treat yourself.

Freeway: 6.5/10

This one is a bit tough to score because it is filled with contradictions. The acting is generally very good though extremely over the top. The story is basic but insane, and clearly not meant to exist in the real world. Witherspoon's character is unrepentant and often unlikable but you develop tremendous sympathy for her at the same time. The filmmaking is pretty bad in terms of the quality of the image, but it is effective and evocative at times. It's essentially 70s exploitation film made in the 90s. Worth watching and memorable but not something I would see again.

Shaun of the Dead 9/10

Still funny. The chemistry of Pegg and Frost is just the best. Great cast all round. Setups and payoffs aplenty. Decent zombie gore.
My15 yo son loved it.

Rise of the planet of the apes: 7/10
Dawn of the planet of the apes: 7/10

Never saw either until a couple of days ago. Both of these were really well done in some ways. CG is phenomenal and you quickly forget that the apes are computer constructs. Drama is very well done, as is the acting, and the action scenes are also great. But there are a number of logical inconsistencies that are included to move the films along. Similarly, some of the characters become 1 dimensional for storytelling purposes. That takes me out a little even though I understand the motivation for it. Good films.

The Naked Gun 8/10
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell Of Fear 7/10
The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult 6/10

Bad timing I guess, but my kids and I binged all three Naked Gun movies. They hold up reasonably well I think overall the first one is the best but the best jokes are in the second one. The third is ok but starting to look tired with all the same jokes rolled out again.
These films are really well cast and every one is just so game to be stupid. Who would have thought someone like George Kennedy could do such deadpan joking although admittedly it is really Leslie Nielsen who has the real comic skills. A shame he ran it into the ground later in his career with truly awful comedies.
The kids loved them and pretty much agree with my ranking assessment. Their highlight was Nordburg building his gun in the second one.

Panic Room 7/10
Is this film ever going to get released in a decent physical media copy? I’m not sure it’s even on bluray? A really fine thriller, not one of Fincher’s best and very straight forward but all of the acting is perfect, even Leto and the constant building of tension is expertly done. The only thing I can do without is all of the stupid look at me I can make a camera swoop through the handle of a kettle because I have CG technology now!

Just watched the latest Ghostbusters. It was worse than I even thought possible. Despite the fact the original characters are actually integrated in the story this time, the script and direction is way too weak to make anything of it. No heart, no humor, zero scares.

Late Night with the Devil: 7.5/10

Really good movie. Great acting, engaging story that effectively builds suspense, and the 70s period aspect was very well done.

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare - 6/10

Never quite as fun or crazy as it wants to be, and the action rarely gets the blood pumping, but the breezy tone and cool soundtrack still make it a decently entertaining watch. And it's almost worth the price of admission to see Cavill in that crazy beard, or hear Ritchson attempt a Danish accent and fail so completely.

Ultimately I have to agree with the critics though that it feels like a waste of a good story. And for such a crucial mission of WWII it feels awfully slight and like nothing is much at stake. So I can only hope someone else comes along and does much better justice to it (and these soldiers) someday.

Just finished The Shawshank Redemption 10/10 the definition of a perfect movie. We’ve all seen it and most more times than we can remember. Love it.

Civil War 9/10..... Somewhere between Ukraine,Gaza and The Walking Dead without the Zombies.

The scary thing is it could happen.

Watched it yesterday and I'd rate it about the same. A little slow paced at times and they definitely could've done more with the backstage tension and audience reactions. Also would've loved to see how people were impacted at home in front of their TV:s. The scene where the girl's head splits open killing everyone in the room gets a 10/10.

The Searchers: 8/10

This was on my to watch list for many years and it didn't disappoint. Considered to be one of the great westerns and great Ford films, and that's hard to argue. It's a western epic, very dark and times, very funny at times, with characters who are complicated and compelling. The way Wayne mocks sacred native American culture shooting the dead man's eyes out is shocking, and his revenge fueled rampages go over the line, but his character isn't portrayed as wholly sympathetic. I thought this was great.

Better than the first.

The last movie I saw was The Last Movie starring Dennis Hopper. It sucked donkey testes. For a while there as I watched it I thought I would never want to watch another movie again.

Took the kids (13 & 15) to a double screening at a cinema tonight. I had been holding off until they were old enough as well as make it a cinema experience.
They loved both of them!
I wasn’t old enough to see Alien on its original release but saw Aliens in the cinema when I was 15. It had remained my favourite of the two for many years because of that, but now…Alien is just so simple and elegant. Scott created a beautiful but horrific environment and mood. The crowd reactions were great - the chestburster is still so visceral, even if the scurrying of the table is a tad hokey now.

Aliens is just fun. The concept turned up to 11. While it’s a big, balls out action spectacle, the quieter moments of Ripley and Newt really give the movie some heart. The last half hour is just pure adrenaline.

Love it, fantastic. My 10 year old desperately wants to see them, I’m still deciding if he is old enough. The only horror film he has seen is Poltergeist which he really liked.

Agree. When I watched it recently it surprised me, that scene is the only really shocking moment in the film. Everything else is fairly subtle. The whole moment though just makes me think of Spaceballs now lol.
