How do you do that with doors that have set hinge spots? I know on the TOMBOs, you can sort of slide the hinge up and down to where you want it, but like the SINDVIK for instance, the spot/position where the hinges are can't be changed.

You are right. I was thinking about Tombos and not the new doors which have fixed holes. Just another reason why the Tombos were so good. Maybe we should all band together and demand they bring back Tombos :p

I thought they were bringing back the TOMBOs soon, under a different name? Just curious, when you shift the hinge on the TOMBO to a higher position than where they mark on the door, is it still stable when opening/closing? Or do you have to also move the 2nd hinge to compensate?

Ikea said they will NOT release the doors in the United states

As long as the hinges aren't too close together, it should be ok. For my besta, I moved the upper hinge on my middle Tombo to raise the upper shelf. I needed around 26" for my Batman PF. You can fit each character of the Trinity in the middle shelves while minimizing the gaps between the upper and lower Tombos.

As for the new Tombos, I'd wait for April or May to see whether Ikea will import the doors over here. They could be using Germany as a test market to see if they sell relatively well enough to consider porting over. Just a thought.

Cool. Do you have a picture of your setup by any chance? I'm curious as to how it looks.

I've since moved my PFs out in the open and put my movie based figures in my besta. I've also mixed both 1/4 and 1/6 scales. But here is an old pic. I might get more bestas if the new Tombos are ported over. The problem is that the new bestas are of a lighter shade of white. So the bestas won't match.

I like that display, that's a pretty cool idea! Do you have any more like that? I got some of the new doors with the new white and the difference is very minimal, I can hardly tell, I think you'd be fine mixing the old with the new without any problem.

Do you still have the doors w/ the hinges offset? If not, it'd still be cool at looking at another BESTA display, given all the DETOLF ones we get, haha. Do you have a thread in Show Your Shelves?

I think I put the proper photo now. :lol

If the difference is minimal then I'll probably get at least one more unit. Ideally the new Tombos would be perfect. If not then I'm thinking of using the Tombos on the 2 upper cubes and using solid doors for the bottom cubes for storage.

Nice, nice! :clap It doesn't look like you need to offset the hinges in the updated pic. I have sort of the same positioning for my Bats and Supes PFs as you do, middle unit, bottom shelf lowered one notch.

You can definitely do that. On the bottom most units, the bordered doors would hide the gap if anything but when you're looking at it from a downward angle like in your pic, you don't even see the gap, which is great. I think the white is hardly noticeable to be honest, my units are all of the old version but my LED lights aren't all the same exact warmth even though they were all the same brand and model, and so there are very small variations in the yellow light. That's how I would almost describe the two whites, just a very small variation but not even as noticeable as my lights would be. Even the black-brown color is close enough that it doesn't make a big difference.

From what I remember, I shifted the hinges higher from the mark on the Tombo frame. By offsetting do you mean putting the hinges closer together or further apart?

Yeah, I just mean putting them in a different position from where the instructions said they should go. In your photo, it looks like only the two middle door hinges are offset, or maybe just the top one of both, they look to be one notch lower. The top and bottom ones look like they are in the standard position.

Yeah, it sucks that Ikea decided to change the temp of their lights. They were clearing out the Inreda LED bars a few months back. I should have stocked up on them when I had the chance.

You should be ok shifting them as long as they aren't too close together. You can probably move the top hinge closer to the centre of the frame and vice versa with the bottom one as long as one of them is close to the edge. How are you planning to set your bestas up?

Similar to yours actually. I didn't offset any of the hinges yet because I had my setup just like yours where they didn't need to be. I was considering putting Bats and Supes in the top most units which would require the offset since the shelve it sits on needs to be dropped pretty low to clear the 26" height, but if I were to hide that huge gap, I'd need a SINDVIK there with the border but those hinges are set in position so I wouldn't be able to do that. That large gap might look pretty bad so I might stick to having my PFs in the middle row. I mix them with 1/6 as well. I had to change it again because the Arkham Joker PF I'm gonna be getting is also pretty tall (he's going with the Ledger Jokers), so I might end up moving a border door to the bottom unit to hide the gap, not that it necessarily needs one because like yours, looking at it downward you don't see the gap as much, but I'm not sure yet until I get it in hand. With Bats and Supes, I have a unit in front of them so it blocks off the gap completely, haha. I've been trying to figure out how to group and display everything so it doesn't look too scattered.

Sweet set up! Yeah I've experimented with putting the larger PFs on the top shelf but I didn't like the gap between doors. The middle shelves are the most versatile with the gaps looking pretty decent if you raise or lower the top and bottom shelves. Your best bet would be custom doors. Ikea used to sell the 2 cube solid doors which could be modified. They also used to sell the 2 and 3 cube Tombos I think as well. If those doors were for for sale now they'd probably sell really well judging by the threads here.

Thanks! I'm trying to get rid of a lot of stuff so there's not as much clutter. Sometimes less is more, and I like that about your display, each piece gets its focus and can shine without others in the way. I do remember those old doors, it's a shame they got rid of them. I guess us collectors are the only ones who really needed that design to show off our collections, shame it was not enough for IKEA to continue the line. It'd probably cost more to customize so I've been trying to work with what they provide and it's been alright so far. It would nice if they were a success and were brought back here so there's at least that option, especially for people who couldn't get their hands on them before.

No Fiskviken for the U.K. I asked today.

Even the guy there was at a loss as to why they discontinued the Tombo. Said they were very popular and he's asked about them all the time.
They didn't sell well in other countries apparently.
