Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

I don't give a ____. :lol

Xenomorph means The Alien from the Alien series. No matter how you slice it. It's what it's called. :lol

Nobody is disputing that, but it's not a term that is exclusive to those particular creatures. That was our point...

So what's the problem? :huh:lol

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Well, it kinda is. Look up Xenomorph, and show me how many non Alien related things you find. :D

Re: Prometheus - Spoiler thread!

Atmosphere conditions could cause advanced corrosion? I know this is a very different set of circumstances here but just picture it, Venus is a similar size planet to us and not too far away however due to Venus's atmosphere a VW Beetle will melt and corrode in 7(ish) minutes

I know a different circumstance, but point is that a close planet of similar size has very different conditions so LV-426 could be extremely different.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

The word Xenomorph is not in the dictionary. Any meaning of the word is purely fiction so it's pretty much open to anything; although a quick google search links it almost solely to 'Alien'.

I'm pretty sure it is, though. It's a term Gorman or someone else put together to describe what Ripley described in her report. An alien creature that goes through different...morphs.
A Xeno...morph.

A xenomorph (also: allotriomorph) is a mineral that did not develop its otherwise typical external crystal form because of late crystallization between earlier formed crystals. Xenomorphs are typical of matrix minerals in rapidly crystallizing volcanic lavas and shallow igneous intrusions. It is also typical of the interstitial or cementing minerals formed during the diagenesis of sedimentary rocks. The opposite is an idiomorph in which the external form is controlled only by the internal crystal structure.

For what it's worth...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_(creature_in_Alien_franchise)

This creature has no specific name, and has been referred to most often onscreen, and in the credits of each film, simply as the Alien. It was called an alien, and an organism, in the first film. It has also been referred to as a creature,[1] a serpent,[9] a beast,[2] a dragon,[2] a monster,[1] or simply, a thing.[10] The term xenomorph (lit. "alien form"—from Greek xeno- or "strange" and -morph, shape) was used by the character Lieutenant Gorman in Aliens[1] and by Ellen Ripley in a deleted scene from Alien 3.[2] This term has been adopted by fans[11] and used in merchandising[12] as a convenient name. The species' binomial names are given in Latin as either Internecivus raptus (meant as "murderous thief") in the Alien Quadrilogy DVD or Lingua foeda acheronsis (meant as "foul tongue from Acheron")[13] in some comic books.[14] The main Alien from Alien vs. Predator is listed in the credits as "Grid", after a grid-like wound received during the film.[9]

Read my previous post, Earth biology term for unknown shape or entity

Pretty sure Pre (i'm only a young Bio student to be fair) It's one of those OTT really "science" terms they coined back in the day to sound really cutting edge and new :lol

I'm pretty sure the actual word Xenomorph was made up for Aliens..

A strange form; An allotriomorph; A monster or monstrous creature; Name invented for the extraterrestrial creatures in the film Aliens

I just found this by Googling "xeno definition":

(Xenos (genus)) Xenos is a genus of wasps belonging to the Stylopidae family. The word derives from the Greek word for strange. A species of the genus is Xenos vesparum, first described by Pietro Rossi in 1793 The females are permanent entomophagous endoparasites of Polistes paper wasps

(Xenos (Greek)) Xenos (ξένος, xénos, plural xenoi) is a word used in the Greek language from Homer onwards that has a wide gradient of meaning, signifying such divergent concepts as “enemy stranger” as well as “ritual friend

(xenos) Stranger, foreigner

is a prefix based on the Greek word "Xenos", meaning stranger. In biology, it is often used to designate species-difference. Xeno Factors refers the phenomenon of cross-species benefit from polyphenols such as resveratrol. See Xenohormesis

combining form meaning "strange" or "foreign."
