Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Dear god..you're just ignoring the truth now.

Everyone's explained this to you a thousand times.

The word "Xenomorph" doesn't exist. It was never used in any Alien-related film.

Can you leave now?
And the proof?

Uh... here's the quote off IMDB:

Hudson: Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt?
Gorman: All we know is that there's still no contact with the colony, and that a xenomorph may be involved.
Frost: Excuse me sir, a-a what?
Gorman: A xenomorph.
Hicks: It's a bughunt.

If that's not enough proof, watch the movie. It's there.

Someone who gets as hot-headed over Alien and Predator as you should know this already. Boggles my mind how you don't remember that scene. Most people who call themselves by fanmade Predator names tend to have seen the movies enough times to be able to recite the dialogue in their sleep.
Not trying to be mean or anything, but it's kind of true. :peace

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Since this is a Sideshow board I will ask this. Why do none of their products they offer have Xenomorph as the title? Hmmmm.... :lol

I think that guy is asking where the proof is that they're not supposed to be called xenomorphs. He was being sarcastic when he said no one said it in the movies. It was an attempt to get rid of Badmoon.

Won't happen. BadMoon is 100% correct on this. They have no name. Period. :lecture

Maybe they don't. They're aliens from a fictional movie and there was never really a reason to give them a proper name. Maybe the Weyland Yutani scientists have a name for them or something, but we're never given a proper name for them. However, if you take the name xenomorph and break it down, Xeno means alien and morph can be translated to form; alien form. I don't think it really matters what fans call them. It's no big deal.

If that's the case, it still doesn't make much sense. The post wasn't very well-formulated.

And who knows? Gorman probably used that term because of its literal meaning. He might as well have said extraterrestrial, alien, etc. Saying either of those would've come off as a bit BS-ish, especially following Hudson's question about the possibility of a simple bug hunt. Nothing says 'wild goose chase' like blatantly announcing you'll be hunting for a yeti or chupacabra. Not a smart military decision for a new lieutenant whose reputation is already shot with the squad.

It could've gone another way too, though. Burke and the company knew there was something fishy going on with that ship. Did anyone really believe those corporate guys when they said Ripley's creature was never recorded once in over 300 surveyed worlds? Really, while there were clearly Facehuggers in the colony lab?
It's the company, guys. Nothing they say should be taken seriously. They were completely aware. Maybe they decided what to call the creatures and used that particular term since 'alien form' or 'foreign form' doesn't necessarily imply hostility, thus it would be easier on paper to get the job done.
"We don't know what's out there" is a lot less of a liability issue than "We know there are killer monsters on the loose and are sending you in anyway".

It is a big deal. If Gorman makes a statement that they are dealing with Xenomorphs and then leads his team into an ass kicking that says something. It either says the Marines suck ass and were weak ass. Or that he was wrong. Remember the Marines in this movie (Aliens) were the best of the best. They were ready for anything. If a "Xenomorph" existed as Gorman stated they would have been ready for them. Marines prepare for fights. They practice over and over and over until they can't practice and prep anymore. They do it at night then at day then again and again.

Turns out they had to attempt to deal with with a creature they never encountered. This voids Gorman's naming of "Xenomorph".

Hmmmm... Some of the Sideshow products actually use the term "Big Chap." See my avatar is even evidence of this fact. So, is that what we should refer to them as?

I'm going to keep calling the Aliens aliens, space beasts, big chaps, Kane's sons, furystorm's favorite scary monster movie creature ever, and even xenomorphs if I so choose.

Xenomorph is technically a real word, though. He also used the word "may" when referring to the involvement of said thing. He could have said "an unknown object may be involved" and it would mean the same exact thing. These Marines were the toughest in the galaxy for sure, but the idea that they trained for everything... that's pure speculation. All the film implied is that if anyone can handle something, the Marines are the most likely to do so. That doesn't necessarily mean they'll prevail (and let's face it, they did stack up a pretty decent body count during the film).
If you have the toughest computer virus in the world, ideally you'll want the best program to deal with it. You stand the biggest chance, but it's still just a chance.

Sigh... semantics.

Alf and the Alien both fall under the meaning of the word xenomorph. Xenomorph basically means alien. The words are synonyms, so I don't understand why it matters if people want to call them aliens or xenomorphs or whatever. The meaning of the word does not change due to the fact that these aliens are deadlier than ET or the guy from Mac and Me.

I'm also not saying that xenomorph is what their true name is. We're never told that. They could be called Slopomobolees for all we know. I'm just saying that xenomorph and alien are interchangeable and it really isn't something worth arguing over due to that fact.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

I hope Hot Toys one day gives us the Queen Slopomobolee.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Blade..read the last 20 pages or so.

Badmoon insists that Gorman was talking about an entirely different creature when he says "Xenomorph"...which makes like, no sense due to several things..the definition of "Xenomorph", etc..

Wouldn't Cameron or someone come out and say that Gorman wasn't talking about the Aliens since the word "Xenomorph" has been used on tons of merchandise?

Yeah, Boba Ben, what you told him has been stated over and over..

Doesn't seem to click... :panic:

Well, take a look at NECA's current Predator line. "Yautja" never appeared in any of the films, yet FOX slapped it on the back of the cards.

*scratches head* Who knows if anything Alien- or Predator-related is legitimate anymore... It could all be some clueless marketer's ploy at keeping an otherwise-nonspecific word alive to better advertise the product in question.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Good point, but there are several other things that would lead you to believe Gorman was talking specifically about Giger's creations, or just referring to aliens in general.

Plus, although not cannon, in the AvP books, Predators ARE known as Yautja. It was stated that that is what they're called.
So no one could say that they were referring to an entirely different creature when they said "Yautja"...it's what they called the Predators.

I was always partial to "the Hish", myself.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Did you guys forget how UNQUALIFIED Gorman was as their leader? He called it a Xenomorph because...well, that's what he came up with. He used it as a generic term.

No one in that crew knew what that meant. When Hudson said Bug Hunt he probably meant something along the lines of "Bull____ mission."

There. Christ....

What about Tremors? Graboids. Grab- they grab you....Oids- I don't know.

The species name isn't called Graboids, it's just a name that stuck.

And Hish, Yautja, aint real. None of that goofy bull____ exists. Xenomorph gets more credit because it's in the movie.

Or...they do it on purpose so the fans debate hard into the night on a toy forum about what's right or wrong.:lol
