Doof warrior makes perfect sense as the signal relayer for Joe's orders, just like they used flags and bugles before radios. Plus, he was really ****ing cool. :D I couldn't help but think Devin Townsend survived the apocalypse and joined Joe's army. :lol

That and Joe has military background, I took Doof simply as his martial/march/war music, which incidentally was used to relay orders.

A war horn if you will, with all the Nordic stuff they had going on.
 
Yes. The phrase "drums of war" has its ancient origins. Doof was simply a flag with his own autonomous flourish.
