..or if they were at least, you know, funny.

I think that's really at the heart of why I'm so bothered by the humor in TOD, LC and KOTCS. It's that their attempts in humor are simply not that funny. The "jokes" are simply too infantile and silly. The jokes in Raiders had real wit and bite, and were so well placed that they served their purpose--they relieved the tension. It also showed that less is more. Because the jokes were so infrequent (at least compared to the others), they were very welcome and almost came out of nowhere.

Does anyone remember how magnificent the scene where Indy shoots the swordsman truly was way back in 1981, when it was so unexpected? People who watch the movie nowadays who have never seen Raiders before, probably have seen that scene in other contexts, so when the scene comes up in the movie, the moment is spoiled. But when the movie first came out, and there was no internet and not forums or chat rooms or youtube or anything that could tell you about it, that scene completely surprised the hell out of you. It got an enormous laugh like the one or two big jokes in the Avengers.

Very well stated! :goodpost: your point about the swordsman is 100% dead on. It's so "honest" that it still works even after multiple viewings.

If I recall, and correct me if I'm wrong, Harrison was sick with dysentery and he was supposed to have this drawn-out fight scene with the swordsman with his whip. He suggested that he just shoot the guy, and it turned out to be one of the classic scenes in the film. As you say, sometimes less is more.

I didn't have any issues with Raiders, except for after the idol intro scene, there were quite a few scenes that looked off to me.

Also, I have probably seen Raiders more than any other film, but I can honestly say that I never noticed the idol having realistic eyes before now, apparently the idol's eyes were supposed to move to follow Indy, but that was cut from the movie.

It really caught me off guard, as I couldn't believe I had never noticed that before now!

I'm still waiting for someone to make an official replica of that one. :tap

Ya I think that is the story they've been telling us anyways. But I believe there is an alternet scene that was shot with him actually fighting the swordsman with his whip. It's on YouTube somewhere and I haven't checked yet but I believe it's part of the deleted scenes feature with this new blu ray set?

Either way they did choose "wisely".

Not sure, but dysentary would probably not make me feel up to this whip fight.

It'd be better if you could hear Harrison say "Ah, f__ it. Can't I just shoot him, buddy?"

In the new Raiders doc there's a part where Harrison is talking out Indy's logic for not just shooting all the men rushing him in the Cairo fight. The reason given was because they kind of bum rush him and don't give him a chance to draw his gun, so I'm sure he was happy that he got to shoot the swordsman since it made rational sense in that situation.

The fact that the scene was shot does kind of conflict with the dysentery story though.

I think they were just rehearsing the shot, and that footage wasn't intended to be in the final film. After doing some of the rehearsal with dysentery, that's when HF said, "why not just shoot the sucker?"

Yea I mean he barely has time to drop the groceries and duck let alone draw his gun, plus Marion and everyone else is right there crowded around. When he shoots the swordsman the crowd has all parted out of the way and hes got a clean shot plus he's in a hurry to find Marion. It makes sense enough.

I read most of the cast and crew aside from Steven had dysentery, Steve brought his owned canned foods though. :lol

Sadly we all know how trying to do a complex scene went for Sallah while suffering from dysentery.

looked like a long day on set with a lot of heat so... dysentery wouldnt be to pleasant.

conspiracy theory #1:

i do get the sickly feeling that HF was pushing to shoot the guy from the get go but GL wanted the whip-out. maybe "dysentery" is a story HF & SS elaborated on to get GL to agree? from here it took on a life of its own and there was no turning back! DUN DUN DUN!!

Started watching LC last night but I have a very difficult time getting through the first 45 min or so... Basically up until Sr gets involved it plays so slap stick that its almost embarrassing to watch. Especially since I just watched RAIDERS the night before. How about in just the opening sequence alone we get WAY to much info.

He discovers everything... His scare, whip for the first time, fear of snakes, his leather jacket and fedora, there is even a kid for him to fight so its not weird if its an adult who is tryin to stab him. Am I missing anything? Then off to the boat. A cripple who has no problem walking because this boat is not rocking one iota. And a second later there is a constant tittle wave coming over the side?! Fast forward to when he is looking for the kinghts tomb and decides to light a torch. In a pool full of GAS! He also hides under an empty tomb to escape the fire?! The whole place would light up like a xmas tree!! This is just the tips of the ice berg... After witnessing the arks powers and a guys heart being pulled from his body would he really question the existence of the "cup"? I can go on and on with this! Lazy lazy lazy story telling. ToD does have its share of problems as well but at least we get the same IJ that we got from RAIDERS.

I might be the only one here but man do I have a problem with this depiction of Indiana Jones. If it wasn't for SC witty banter back and forth with his son this movie would completely blow! Worst than KCS. But then again every movie that came after RAIDERS drops significantly IMPO. Every other tittle should have Indiana Jones and the... Because it will guide you in the right direction. Watch the one with out! RotLA. That movie is SO SO SO BLOODY awesome!

Something simple that has always annoyed me about Crusade; Indy wearing a tie with his jacket and hat??? He looks like a nerd...

RAIDERS is an unquestionable masterpiece of film making and pure entertainment.

Same!!! To me Raiders is the "perfect" film, and I've seen it hundreds of times over the last 31 years. But noticing those eyes for the first time was a spin-out!

Great to see some deleted footage!

I don't think it contradicts the sickness story though.
It might take a full day worth of filming (or 2!) to get a scene like that perfect. So they filmed a few minutes worth ....or a few hours worth .....and THEN they were like, 'screw this, we're all sick, lets go home'

(and the story goes it wasn't just Ford but much of the US cast and crew as well)

John Rhys-Davies said:
But at that particular time, I recall – this is sort of disgraceful – we had the worst case of dysentery I ever had. I’ve never been so ill in my life, and I had tunnel vision. I couldn’t really do much at all, and I remember Steven saying, “John could you get just down a bit lower to give them a better eyeline?” And as I got down to give him a better outline, I filled my djellaba [an Arab tunic] in front of 200 people – and I didn’t care [laughs].

Got a 37" LG 1080p HDTV, blu ray player, and picked up the Indy collection as well as Ghostbusters, Clockwork Orange, Goodfellas, Iron Man 1 and 2, and The Shining. Gonna watch Raiders later tonight after we remount the TV. Our first attempt we put it up about 6" too high on the wall. :lol
