Sounds like CW is interested in a Smallville type origin show for Wonder Woman.

The CW’s Wonder Woman prequel project is taking another step toward becoming a possible series.

Studio Warner Bros. has hired a casting director for the project and is preparing to send out a casting notice for the starring role. As previously announced, the project is titled Amazon and it “looks at the teenage years of the heroine who will become Wonder Woman.”

Casting at this early stage is an usual move. Normally this doesn’t happen until after a project has received at least a pilot order — and Amazon, to be clear, does not. But a project like this so hinges on the lead role, perhaps the network and studio want to see some potential actors before deciding whether to pull the trigger (or they’re so confident it will receive a pilot order, they want to get a jump start on casting vs. competing pilot season projects).

Given the success of Arrow this fall, The CW must be tempted to add another DC Comics character to the lineup as a potential companion series. Just remember, however, we’ve been down this road before. Previously, NBC developed a Wonder Woman series last year starring Adrianne Palicki, but despite some photos that made us TV bloggers very happy, the project never made it past the pilot stage.

Wonder Woman is an odd choice considering the last series never saw the light of day, but I like the way CW is handling Arrow, so maybe they can do this some justice.

Apparently it was an attempt to control rumours. This was posted by writer on his twitter account.

Merciful Minerva! So much for using code names to avoid internet speculation.

The premise is interesting if the writing can match and we get good casting.

They are saying she will be called Iris. This is not WW.

Um....wrong?

A recent casting call for The CW's new Wonder Woman series lit the internet aflame when it seemingly named the Amazon superhero Iris and not Diana, the name she's been using for the last 70 or so years. But rest assured, angry masses, this will not stand- because it's just a big misunderstanding.

According to Deadline, this is the top-secret casting call for the lead in the new Wonder Woman drama. And as you can see the main character's name in this casting call is named Iris. But it was merely a ruse (or at least that's what The CW wants you to think), as Wonder Woman script writer Allan Heinberg took to twitter proclaiming, "Merciful Minerva! So much for using code names to avoid internet speculation. ;)" Which we're assuming means, relax, she's still Diana.

She comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She's delighted and just as often horrified by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It's all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling to her. Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she's completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what's on her mind at all times. She's bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you're lying to her. And she doesn't have time or patience for politics or tact because she's too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer. There are too many sights to see and things to learn and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.

The CW is also looking for a lady who is at least 5'8″ or taller to play the part, which could put her eye-to-eye with her superhero competition on The CW's Arrow. Do we like this version more than NBC's Lady Tony Stark Wonder Woman pitch? Sounds like a classic fish-out-of-water story, which is always fun, and might be a lot more fun with a woman.

Here is the story regarding the use of the name.

Deadline tonight had what could be a big scoop – a casting breakdown for the WB/CW Wonder Woman TV project, Amazon. Casting directors are looking for tall actresses (5’8″ or higher). But that’s not the weird part. The breakdown calls for a character named “Iris.” We are hoping this is code for “Diana Prince,” and that the studio and the network just put in “Iris” as a placeholder.

Otherwise, a Wonder Woman named Iris sounds about as interesting as a Catwoman named “Patience Phillips.”

Please note that the studio and the network are checking out potential leads but that no formal order for an Amazon pilot has happened yet.

Here’s the “Iris” casting breakdown. Replace “Iris” with “Diana” and it’ll go down better:

“She comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted *and just as often horrified * by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It’s all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling * to her. Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she’s completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what’s on her mind at all times. She’s bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you’re lying to her. And she doesn’t have time or patience for politics or tact because she’s too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer. There are too many sights to see * and things to learn * and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic * and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.”

Aside from the “Iris” bit, the description sounds like an interesting take, at least… Thoughts? Leave them in the comments section below or come talk about it on our forum!
