I recently watched Evil Dead Rise and also agree with your assessments. I thought it was good and enjoyable, but not great and fairly forgettable despite the outrageous handful of scenes and events. Certainly nothing close to the Campbell stuff. Still haven't seen the reboot, but need to.

Kick-Ass: 7/10

Haven't watched this one in forever, but found myself really enjoying it. Was oddly refreshing to watch in comparison to contemporary comic movies that often feel stale and unfulfilling. It's a roll of the dice whenever Nic Cage is in a movie, but he knocked it out of the park with this role.

Barbie: 7.5/10

This one really surprised me at how much I enjoyed it. So much of it was pure fun and funny. The wit and skill of Gerwig and her now husband are hard to deny. That opening scene is so damn good. Acting was really well done, particularly by Gosling, but Cera was terrific, and Robbie held the film together well. I thought I was going to hate McKinnen going in, as I find her grating in most things, but I thought her character and acting were also terrific.

Godzilla King of the Monsters - 4/10

Finally gave this one a watch after really enjoying the first two movies in the monsterverse... and yeah it's just as bad as the critics said. Lots of one-dimensional characters, yet another villain who wants to "destroy the planet to save it," and far too much time spent trying to create another complex movie universe.

And yes I know you can't have a Godzilla movie without cities get destroyed, but the mass, worldwide destruction in this movie and leveling of one city after another (and the unspoken deaths of millions of people) actually became a bit disturbing and off-putting to me at some point. Which made it hard to enjoy the monster battles as much as I'm sure I was meant to.

The Brain: 6/10

Not great art, but surprising engaging movie all things considered. Completely ridiculous plot but the chase scenes kept me interested. Overacting and the brain itself were incredible. Awesome and awful at the same time.

Zombie: 4/10

Pretty boring and unengaging for the most part. But it gets points because the zombies are pretty great for the time, and this movie had a lot of innovations and influences. Lots from the first resident evil can be traced back to this

Witchboard: 7/10

I thought this was quite good and enjoyable. Acting was really good for the most part, story was pretty interesting for what it was, cinematography was also good.

Prometheus - 5/10

Decided to give this one another try, and it still doesn't work for me any better. Turning the Engineers into the progenitors of human life on Earth and mythical godlike beings feels like a massive stretch, and the movie is so slick and high-tech that it barely even feels like a part of the Alien universe. Plus the fact it's populated with the most idiotic group of scientists I've ever seen in a movie. Lol

Fassbender's android and the automated surgery scene are the only thing that make it worth watching.

The Iron Claw - 7 out of 10 - solid drama. Depressing as hell :lol

This Boys Life - 7 out of 10 - De Niro is wonderful in this one. Such a goofy fine fellow.

Also this past week I’ve decided to end the year with a bang

Raiders of the Lost Ark - 10 out of 10
JAWS - 10 out of 10
Star Wars - 10 out of 10

Dead Poets Society 10/10
Masterful filmmaking and an incredible performance from Robin Williams (damn, I still miss him so much) The whole cast is spot on. It hit a lot harder now I'm 52 than it did on first viewing when I was a teenager. Carpe Diem!

The Boy and the Heron 8/10
You just have to let this one wash over you. It's dense and beautiful, strange and deep. Very moving. Very unpredictable. A meditation on life and death.

The Dead Zone - 8/10 Great film made even greater by Scream factory 4k disc. This film has aged really well. I was never a fan as a kid but have watched it 2x over the past 2 years and it’s becoming one of my favs.

Because I purchased the 1/6 Scale Cage and Travolta, I watched Face/Off 3 times this week in between the Epsteiene list reveals and the Reddit blow ups over who wasn't on it. I couldn't stop watching and re-watching.

I try to find holes in my argument modern movies are garbage and it's due to CGI and poor acting. The xplosions are real, the lines are great. Both travolta and Cage make you forget reality and you believe this can happen.

Both Cage and Trovolta are true actors. Cage obviously stole the show....with his line delivery and so did Travolta with "What a prediCament."

Just wowzers. Such a SIMPLE concept, made a great movie with just masculinity on overdrive. Modern movies are too wrapped up in ESG, Politics, China to be great.

I'm Castor troy.....just great. It made me happy watching this each time this week and re-enforces my ideas///

CGI sucks so badly. Action movies are not action movies today, just CGI garbage pretending to be action movies.

Total Recall 1990

I have not seen this in almost 20 yrs.

This is a movie Hollyweird fogot how to make. A simple idea, a man might be a double agent, but his memory is erased as he searches for clues on Mars. Yet why does he remember Mars when he has never been?

It actually reminded me of Inception.

It's a 10 put of 10. Fun, fast pace, no wasted scenes...great acting, 3 tits, Sharon Stone in her hot Prime....no weird Hollyweird ESG tarded trash in it. Great sci-fi action movie.

When Evil Lurks.
Easily the best horror movie of 2023, don't eat while watching this movie, I can stomach anything but three key scenes were visceral and brutal. It doesn't hold back at all. It's an Argentinian movie so don't let that hold you back from watching this movie.

10/10
