Yeah, it could be damage control. Seems sincere to me (Skrein's statement), but what do I know :lol?

Yeah, but did he know that the character was Asian-American? Not sure if he knew of the character, or even of the comic beforehand. Maybe he realized after accepting the role.

Yeah, that could be the case. No way of knowing of course, We're all just speculative little ants. :lol

Can you imagine taking the role and then waking up the next morning to that **** storm? :lol

Maybe they can put the poor guy in another role. That'd be cool.

Here's what I don't get, Hollywood is sucking on China's ass for the overseas market yet they cast a white woman for The Ancient One in Doctor Strange, Scarjo for Major in GITS and cast a white guy for an asian character.

I am dumbfounded that the executives are this stupid.

They didn't want an Asian for the Ancient One because that'd seem racist to stupid people who don't read comix and think that Mandarin is a racist character.

Japanese like western culture a lot and want to look like caucasians. They weren't against Scarjo in any way.

Ben Daimio is Japanese American so, like with GITS, Chinese wouldn't care either way.

Hollywood just has two settings, white and black. Thats it.
You never see them getting indian actors or latino either, not that much. Most movies dont hire besides the two groups.
80% white, 15 percent black, and the token latino/indian/asian here and there

The ancient one thing has to with with the rift between China and Tibet. Since the Ancient One is Channeling the whole tibetan monk ideal, they had to change it up so they didn't piss off China and lose that market. China only allows 34 movies a year to be imported from other countries. So it's a bit of a battle.

Yes it is.

Del Toro's approach to HB was cheesy and juvenile. What we're getting now is HB for mature audiences under a filmmaker who actually excels in the horror genre.

I mean, I ****ing love Del Toro's Hellboys and Perlman was born for that role, but those movies aren't great adaptations. The characters in the films border on parodies of the original, and while the designs bring Mignola's art to life well enough, the atmosphere is all wrong (the first movie sure delivered on the pulp but not so much on the gothic). A shame he never got to finish his trilogy, but to be honest I'm looking forward to an adaptation that might embrace a bit more of the grim and less of the silly.

Also, put Hellboy in ****ing shorts and give him hooves.

The Major's android body (Shell) in the Anime GITS movie from 1995 had no discernible ethnicity. It can be argued that the shell body is intended to be either Japanese, Caucasian, or both. Also Motoko Kusanagi is not her actual name but an alias, we don't know her real name. The Major has had different origin stories so she is meant to be ambiguous. The Japanese rights holders of GITS and the director of the 1995 anime movie had no problem whatsoever with Johanssen being cast as the character. Lastly, in the 2017 GITS movie the Major's biological mother is Japanese, meaning the fact that her shell looks caucasian in the movie is the whole point, her shell's physical appearance doesn't define the character in any shape or form. There is no controversy here.

yet it flopped horribly because of it.

No real controversy that is, it was all BS from people that don't understand GITS and probably would've never watched it in the first place.
And it's a shame too because I liked the movie.

the studio itself acknowledged that it flopped because of that controversy,

Well if they make that naruto movie they definitely can get away with white washing since naruto is made to look white. I always thought most anime characters looked white. You can tell when a character is Japanese in an anime.
