People shouldn't judge these as sequels, but as individual films. The way I see it, what Nolan did was the antithesis of what Sergio Leone did with his "Dollars" trilogy. Whereas, Leone told three different stories with different characters, but still retained the same overall tone in each film, Nolan has crafted a trilogy that, while it retains the core characters and interconnecting story elements, delivers vastly different thematic undertones in each subsequent installment.

To even compare them is asinine, and, what bugs me the most is when people say that they didn't like it because "it wasn't what they were expecting." What were you expecting, exactly? Open your mind and appreciate it for what it is.

Well said..If you go into a film expecting things dissapointment comes quite easily

TDKR seems to have been pretty intentionally crafted as a sequel. It is directly picking up on plot threads from the previous two films. I wouldn't recommend that someone go and see TDKR without having seen the other two first.

i did enjoy TDKR but i didnt have same feeling i had at the cinema as BB and TDK, i dont know why i am going again thursday so hopefully will comprehensively make up my mind. After TDK and the untimely passing of Heath Ledger I am still surprised Nolan came back to do another as he quite openly said his plans for a 3rd had been ruined as he couldnt use the joker as a villain....

so now's all said and done... who like me feels like this was a great batman trilogy but ultimately had an "elseworlds" feel to it? i guess that was always nolan's intention from the start with his "re-realization" mindset. the realism and the modern setting added to that. think that's why i liked BB the best. the suit, the city and the cinematography seemed to retain some of the fantasy element. i think nolan created a masterpiece, but i hope whoever is rebooting doesn't just try to replicate what he did. i hope they bring back a lot more of that fantastical, dark, gothic, comic book feel.

TDK and BB are made so hey can be viewed standalone or combined

TDKR is not really - it depends heavily on the other two

Yeah ... I can see viewing BB and TDK as standalone movies.

TDKR cannot be. It draws too heavily on the other two. It starts where TDK left off. If you don't know Harvey Dent's story, you're not going to understand where you are. And, it calls-back very heavily to the events of BB ... to such an extent that I suggested my parents go watch Begins again before seeing TDKR. Even the tagline -- "The Legend Ends" -- implies that the legend pre-exists this story.

TDK can be viewed as a standalone. TDKR is purely a sequel ... it is the end of the story.

It definitely felt like a one-shot to me and I'm glad. I think in comics the best of the best Batman stories all fall outside continuity.

That's news to me

Don't believe he ever said that.

i read somewhere his plan had been to make a third arkham based and the joker leads an uprising and a prison break, but it was in the aftermath of his death and i think he was coming to terms with what had happened. By all accounts it was Goyer that got him hungry to do a third by describing the Italian Cafe scene and i think it snowballed from there

Doubtful though. I think Void's right. Given the man literally obliterated all mention of Joker from TDKR because he's still hurt by Ledger's death, I don't think he'd ever state the third movie was "ruined" because of Heath's passing.

i think that's a lot truer now. personally, the continuity had a brilliant run back in the 90s. up until i read the loeb/sale trilogy, knightfall and knightsend were my favourite comics bar none. must have read them each a dozen times. now i find it hard to follow what's going on, it seems so convoluted and unnecessary.

sorry very poor choice of words :) we will say the idea wasnt relevant then as his main protagonist wasnt available !!

I dont think you can doubt that if he was still here then Ledger wouldve heavily featured in TDKR, Nolan had built such a huge respect and admiration for him and his character that he wouldve wanted to showcase it even more !!

According to the article below, there was a general feeling that Ledger would be invited back for a third. There was no storyline for a Joker sequel because there was no storyline for any sequel to TDK.

The "Joker in the sequel story" rumors came from an original outline by Goyer for two movies after BB ... the first being a Joker movie, and the second being Dent's prosecution of Joker, acid/face, and a Two Face rampage. Those were obviously collapsed into TDK.

Not sure how legit the reporting is, though ...

I tend to think the movie would've been similar to what we got in TDKR ... just with a Joker component to the jailbreak and ensuing mayhem.

I wonder what his initial ideas for the third one was before Ledgers death if there were any.

Edit : Nevermind. I just saw the post above.

Yupp that is more or less along the lines of what i've read from a number of sources.

Honestly if Ledger was alive I would imagine he may have taken Crane's place in the kangaroo court scene, and those scenes may have been expanded a little

Wasn't it also mentioned that Joker's origins would be explored in the third film, pre-Ledger's death?

Never from anywhere I would consider a legitimate source :lol

I think Nolan made pretty clear he wanted Joker to always have a mystery about his past, so I guess he bookended that with mystery about his future :lol

I never heard that. They seemed to intentionally play up the "multiple choice" backstories in TDK, so I kinda doubt it. I think that would've undermined TDK some, so I hope that wasn't the plan.

Saw this once and liked it; I am done though. No need for a second viewing...until blu ray

Same.

Something just occurred to me. If Bruce had that terrible bum leg, on top of some bad injuries..how did he make the jump? Guess bread and water have some kinda supernatural healing powers.
