I actually agree with everything you just said.Don't shoot me guys, but overall I liked it too! I don't know, maybe having such low expectations going in helped? Granted, it didn't need half the the flashes back to scenes from the original films and the action could have been betterbut nevertheless I liked the conceit of the "new" matrix design as well asSpoiler:
Also, I loved Jessica Henwick's performance and NPH was outstanding as well. I also liked how Priyanka Chopra's character tied back to the original trilogy. It probably was obvious to others but I haven't watched those films in ages so I was pleasantly surprised.
And I did like the overall story and felt that it had real brilliance in parts in how it continued (and even *corrected* certain elements of) the previous story.
I remember when Revolutions ended feeling jipped that we didn't actually get a real ending at all. And that the entire trilogy instead seemed to be a setup just to get you to buy a subscription to the Matrix MMORPG. So a part of me really loves that this film embraced that notion (that prior epic events were turned into the video game that I'm sure that the failed MMORPG hoped it would be) but then blew all that up to get back on track and continue the story "properly."
I have no problems with Neo and Trinity being "the Two" instead of just him being the One. This does sync with the previous films IMO because he was never at the height of his powers without her belief or motivation. So this movie leaning into their symbiotic relationship even more didn't bother me. Neo, remember the Dyad, lol.
I too really liked Bugs though I was glad that she wasn't the main hero.
New Smith I just didn't care for at all partly because his destruction did seem pretty final in Revolutions plus the new guy just couldn't hold a candle to Weaving. I kept hoping that he would morph and actual Hugo Weaving would "emerge" and was kind of ticked that that never happened. I mean they brought the real freaking Merivingian and Niobe back, where was Weaving.
Oh and I did also really like how they incorporated the little girl from Revolutions into this. That was another "huh??" aspect of the previous film having the entire trilogy close out with that random girl playing in the park with the Oracle, lol. So I liked that this film followed through on the promise of her character's significance.

DEFINITELY rewatch the entire trilogy then. This movie expects you to be familiar with all three prior films. It does shows a *lot* of flashbacks to try and remind people of what came before but you'll still be better off having them fresh in your mind.
I had pretty much become a "only the first film counts" type of guy over the years but when I revisited the entire trilogy last week I found myself surprised at how well the latter two held up.

Yeah, maybe I need to rewatch it but I didn't get how Smith could be in the new Matrix. A new Smith-like virus yes, but not one that had memories of the old Neo. As for Weaving, I thought it was a scheduling conflict. They wanted him & he wanted to be in it, but Lana W. didn't want to wait for his play to end its run.

Sweet, will do. The first is still one of my all-time favorites; so many great scenes, but one I REALLY love is the beginning with Trinity fighting the agents/cops and she rolls down the stairs and has to verbally order herself to get up and break the tunnel vision...that's such a realistic moment heh

I would be more forgiving of the new direction had the action been better.

Hmm, that I can accept. Maybe the Analyst knew he needed to incorporate a new "Smith-like" antagonist to occupy Neo's mind and that "Smith" had the same awareness of the events of the previous films just like everyone else due to the video game with the added layer of thinking that he too lived the game like Neo and Trinity when he actually *didn't.* And that when nuSmith became awakened he saw it as further proof that he was who he thought he was...but he actually wasn't. I think I like that.
All three of the previous films had these epic moments to look forward to every time you rewatched them, even if you didn't care for Parts II and III. The rescue of Morpheus, the freeway chase, attack on Zion, final battle in the rain between Neo and Smith. Sadly this film didn't deliver such a moment.

The whole concept of the Matrix just doesn’t hold up.
Robots would be able to harness electricity even with a nuclear winter scenario of 24/7 cloud cover they fly as it is.
No need to keep humans pacified just kill them and be done with it unless they want them to suffer as slaves on purpose or they find our minds to be interesting enough to be kept around as a reminder of their creators.
Elon Musk will build the first Sentinel lol

A couple comparisons to Star Wars, because well, what else am I gonna do, lol.
Watching this film really reminded me of what a bummer it was that George didn't make the ST in the 90's instead of the PT. Keanu and Moss aged *incredibly* well and totally held their own as the main protagonists again. If only we could have had that for SW as well.
And then another thing I noticed was how the tone of the story was reversed between the SW OT/ST and Matrix OT/ST. With the SW OT everyone is celebrating and assumedly about to live happily ever after at the end with the ST coming and giving the main heroes tragic ends while the Matrix OT gave Neo and Trinity tragic ends only to have this film resurrect them so that they could live happily ever after. So be careful what you wish for ST haters, lol.
