Honestly, after KOTCS it's a situation now where if it's bad it should have been Spielberg and if it's good then it's a wash/they made the right decision.
I'd rather go down with the captain, but as long as Ford is there I'll be along for the ride.

It does feel to me like Spielberg has been leaning in an overly sappy and sentimental direction with his last 10 or so movies, so maybe Mangold could bring back that slightly edgier Raiders tone we've all been wanting to see again.

MIJGA! I thought Ready Player One was alright but had to look up what else Spielberg directed since Crystal Skull. I'd actually seen a few others (Bridge of Spies, Lincoln, The Post) but they didn't make much of an impression, his maturing has for the most part shown.

Hopefully I am wrong, but it feels like really bad news to me in so far as it dramatically increases the likelihood that this wont actually get off the ground now.
I don't mind a change of director...... but it will likely lead to a postponement of production and perhaps Spielberg's name, more than anyone else involved, was pushing it along.

That was a thought too. That it just signals production issues/problems and more delays. Hopefully they get past that. Sometimes when they bring on a new director they have to rework the script, start from scratch. Hopefully not looking at a 2025 release.
Ford wants -- and needs -- his $20 million payday so he'll fight to push it through. Plus Disney is too reliant on rehash and remakes NOT to make this. Delay perhaps but unfortunately this will get made.
I'd love to see them end the series on a better note than Indy 4, so I'm still feeling cautiously optimistic about the idea. And honestly it shouldn't really take much to improve on the last movie. If they can just resist the urge to add in any aliens, CG monkeys, or Shia Labeoufs, it'll already be a thousand times better.

That could work, like they did with star wars maybe even do flashbacks of one of his adventures. Lol
I guarantee his opening sequence will be in the past and he'll be de-aged. Classic Indy.
Whatever McGuffin he was looking for in the past will likely resurface in the 60's (or whatever era the movie takes place in) and bring old-man Indy back out of retirement and into a new adventure.
I know this is probably sacrilege to most here, but I'd love to see his outfit upgraded a bit for this movie. As iconic as it may be, it's getting really hard to buy him still running around as an old man in the exact same 1930s adventurer outfit.
Obviously he would keep the fedora and the basic color scheme would stay the same, but they could at least bring the materials more up to date and give him some newer boots or a different kind of bag.
Plus it would just be cool to have an Old Indy figure in our collection with a slightly different kind of look.

I foresee Old Indy passing the fedora to a young spunky female grad student of his. She gets caught up in his adventure and saves him using the whip.
He places the fedora on her head and tells her to keep it and the whip, as he is ready to retire. "Its not the years, kid. Its the mileage" line will play one last time...

I like that idea. I say keep the hat and leather jacket, change everything else. Good idea.

Kinda want them to keep the same look except the color scheme is a bit different the pants can be a more dark grey with a olive green tint. Saw this concept of what Chris Pratt would look like as Indy and I think it would look good for a new design (except for that weird shoulder holster/strap thing) boots can stay the same but maybe a darker brown then his original ones.
Those skinny leg pants are so today.
