Here in Belgium, or at least the area I live in, it's common to greet friends and family with three kisses on the corner of the lips, it's a variation on the cheek to cheek greeting, shake hands, then the kisses, first left corner, then right, then left, then a hug or a tap on the shoulder. It's a sign you respect and care for the person.

Greeting kisses is something that really varies from area to area. I went just out of the province and there they just kissed cheeks twice instead of your three-corner-lip stuff.
