Well yeah, of course the Dark Knight Collection made a mockery of Toy Biz's pathetic attempts. But those didn't come out til 1990, well after the hype of the movie was gone. In 89, all we had was the crappy Toy Biz version with that stupid belt and stubby arms.
I too, loved Kenner's offerings cause they were very close to the Super Powers Batman repainted black we were promised on the Toy Biz packaging. But...I was always disappointed by those as well, cause they were a weird hybrid of comic book and movie. Keaton and Nicholson's faces on old Super Powers bodies.
Kids aren't dumb, and to this day I don't know WHY the hell toy companies think kids are happy with non-accurate toys that don't reflect the movie or cartoon. Cause they know it's all we get so we'll just shut up and take it?
NONE of the Dark Knight Collection figures had the accurate symbol from the movie. And only two actually were sculpted with ALL the costumes details. One was Bruce Wayne with grossly oversized Batman head and hands. And the other was Shadow Wing, a figure that reused the old Silverhawks gimmick and only really looked good posed with his arms out and looked stupid with his arms down and his caped clipped to his wrists. And also...wrong symbol.
Batman Returns came out and only ONE figure bothered to have the new suit properly sculpted, and it was a deluxe figure painted head to toe in an ugly GOLD color with the chest armor being a separate piece attached to a ridiculous backpack. FAIL.
And Batman Forever came out. NOT A SINGLE FIGURE of Batman in his Panther suit as he appeared in the movie. Not ONE.
And I don't think there were any accurate Batman and Robin figures either, but by that point I stopped caring.
So it's no wonder this figure has us whipped into a frenzy....it's making up for two decades of laziness and neglect on the toy company's part...bravo to Neca for FINALLY giving us all what we dreamed about back in 89!!
