I can't find an exact time, but the actor portraying the new companion will be announced at a press conference "tomorrow morning". This news just broke a couple of hours ago, and it is evening in the UK, so I guess that means we'll hear something 12-ish hours from this posting?

I had absolutely no idea this was happening until a few minutes ago on here, cue the divided opinions and comparisons!

The press conference happened, and it was announced we would only be getting 5 new regular episodes this year and one Christmas special. The Christmas special will introduce a new companion played by Jenna-Louise Coleman:

Not happy about only getting half a season this year. Also, the BBC tweeted this this morning (putting it in spoiler tags just in case):
Steven "Amy & Rory will leave in a final encounter with the Weeping Angels in ep 5. Not everyone gets out alive and I mean it this time"

Nothing about the 50th anniversary was announced today.

Like everything else to come out of the Moffat era, the announcement is painfully underwhelming.

I don't mind it. I am glad to hear we get another Weeping Angels story, but I hope he keeps more low key like Blink and less of te blockbuster about it. (I know, not much of a chance).

I think the new companion looks good. About time we had a brunette. :D

Wow, we dusted off this thread? Glad it's back :D

As for the girl, i'm hoping she won't just be another human girl from Earth with an attitude. Hopefully she'll be an alien. And I hope she doesn't fall in love with the Doctor...already been done far too many times...

A pretty, young girl, bold choice. I hope she has the hots for the Doctor.

They're bringing back the Angels? I thought the last time was once too often.

Way to give the girl a chance...

Uhh, well I don't think she's a very good actor...and I was hoping that they'd try something different in picking the new companion. Of course she might end up being alright, but I still think it was a poor decision, and they could have done better.

I will admit i was hoping for a male companion, but i think the BBC want to keep the older males interested :rotfl

Seriously, IMO Down with Moffatt, Bring back RTD! Now those, were the good old days. IMO the only thing that was actually of any quality during the SM (or S&M lol!) era has to be "the doctor's wife" which was a Neil Gaiman Script originally written for David Tennant!!!

Can't wait for a new doctor and a multi-doctor special. I just always thought Matt Smith was too daft to be a doctor...not to mention IMO a bit fugly...

Nope, Moffat asked Gaiman to write for series 5 but the budget couldn't allow it to be filmed that series so it was pushed back a year to series 6. As stated by Moffat on the blu ray extras and Gaiman on his mini-introduction. So no, it was never intended for Tennant.

Too daft? Rather daft than too human with emotional issues and a broken heart for a toothy 'teen'. I'm in totally with Moffat, RTD was pretty bad at best but il give him credit there are a fair few one off episodes I enjoy going back too, and despite the fact I think Ten was too human for a 900 year old alien, I still enjoyed him in the role, but Smith blows him out of the water.

That was one reason why I like Smith better then Tennant. I LOVE Tennant in the role, but Smith just seems more "alien" then Tennant. Not only in looks, he just had an odd sized head :lol, but the way he acts and delivers his lines makes him seem Non-Earthian.

All's fair and opinions will be opinions, just that. No emnity my friends:1-1:

Saw this on Wiki which was referenced, which is why I thought the episode was originally carded for Ten :-

"Gaiman began writing the episode before Matt Smith was even cast as the Eleventh Doctor; Gaiman envisaged David Tennant's performance in the first draft..."

According to The Writer's Tale, Matt Smith was cast before the end of the fourth series of DW.

IMO though, I thought being human was in essence what doctor who needed to really connect with this new audience (being newly re-launched) for day to day life to make it believable. In a way, what RTD was to actually pave the way for the SM timeline. I mean, basically, if you didnt go through the RTD process, It'd just be fobbed off like Primeval...

Plus being human provided the doctor with so much raw full-on emotion. A man who had been through so much and lived over 900 years must have baggage and an emotional life. I thought Chris and David really breathed life into The Doctor and that's what made it such generally a big hit and not just for cult fan boys but then again that's just IMO
