So, none natively, but not even through the Media Server version of WMP11 which should be able to play divx/xvid files???

According to this link, you can use a combo of TVersity and FFD to stream divx/xvid files to yor PS3:

https://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3media&thread.id=48202

I don't know, I can't even get the media streaming to work right since there is an issue with Linksys wireless routers. It works for a little bit then it keeps dropping the network connection for the PS3, 360 and my computer every few minutes when the media streaming option is enabled so I just keep it disabled. I prefer the 360 for media streaming anyway.

so would you say that a ps3 is a safe investment if you want a blue ray and you dont mind rotting your mind with video games?

Yes, it is a great Blu Ray player. That is about all mine is being used for right now and I love it. Plus Sony has been pretty good about releasing new firmware versions.

I would probably go out on a limb that if anyone was contemplating buying a Blu-Ray player, that the PS3 would be an optimal way to go. Here's my biases why:

1) It's a Sony -- any updates would be optimized to run on their tried-and-true biggest Blu-Ray player installed base.
2) it doubles up as a (gasp) gaming machine -- yep, bet you folks didn't know that!
3) After all the other models and brands out there have died and been reinvented, Sony knows that their PS3 would have to outlive all of them.

The only thing going against the PS3 is if you feel that forking out $$$ for one is justifiable strictly for the Blu-Ray aspect of it.

I have a Linksys router, and I have never had a dropped network connection.

I think it was only with certain models. There were a lot of people having issues when the firmware came out that included the media sharing. I could never get it to work properly even after doing the same fixes some others used.

I went with hd-dvd first because it had more titles I was interested in. When Casino Royale came out, I went with a ps3 and blu ray. I prefer hd-dvd when given a choice.

Anybody out there who has a hd-ready TV and has watched hd programing, take the plunge and pick a format. The picture is really amazing and enhances movies. Even older movies look pretty darn swank. Even if you pick a losing format, you'll still be able to enjoy your disc and have a nice dvd player.

I think it also depends on how many movies you watch. If you are more of a casual viewer, it might be worth it to just wait. If you're watching movies often, you should do yourself a favour and jump in

Yes. Even if you weren't a gamer it's still one of, if not the, cheapest blu-ray players. The PS3 got a lot of bad press for no reason IMO. It's been a solid machine since launch, and they fixed a lot of the little bugs (backwards compatibility) with numerous firmware updates.

On a side note, if you're at all interested in backwards compatibility, you should act fast. Word is Sony is or already has pulled out the hardware that handles the emulation in favor of software, ala Xbox360.

I forget if it was mentioned earlier in this thread, but if you're considering getting a PS3, wait about a week and a half, since there is gonna be a price drop in effect Sunday the 15th at the latest. Well, you can probably buy it now, and go back into the store to get that money back with one of those return... policy... things.

Do you have any links on this? This is the first I've heard of it.

I just bought a new Sony Bravia 46inch 1080p tv, I was considering buying the LG dual player that plays both Blue Ray and HD DVD's. Since there seems to be a lot of good knowledgeable people posting here on the subject anyone know if the LG dual player is a good player/option? Thanks in advance.

I have never played with the LG unit, but several people who have have reported that it is a fairly good player, though not necessarily spectacular. The major downsides to the player are its high price (for $1199, you could buy a PS3 for Blu-ray, a Toshiba HD-A2 for HD DVD, and get quite a few movies), and the fact that it doesn't fully support some of HD DVD's interactive features.

Also, it would be a bitter pill to swallow if you were to spend the money now, only to have a new combo model come out in a couple of months that offers more features, better performance, and complete support of the respective formats, all for a lower price. LG is working on a "second generation" model, which is supposed to be released in either the late summer or early fall. Samsung is also working on a new combo player, which is due out (I believe) in August.

Ah cool thank you, so I guess I will play the waiting game on the dual format player. I know I could buy a PS3 and another HD player but I like to have a clean simple set up so a player that plays DVD's, Blue Ray and HD DVD all in one is great solution. But your right the price is high and I am sure once other companies start coming out with dual players the price will drop. Thanks again.

I don't know, I've been reading thedigitalbits for quite a few years now and I think they've remained very neutral on the whole HiDef subject. That is until recently when Harry made that rather uninformed post over at ain't it cool news about how everyone should pick up an HDDVD player and proceeded to give some incorrect info about why everyone should buy one. How could Harry not know that Blu-Ray players are reverse compatible just as HD players are? Did he not research both formats?

I wouldn't choose anything until this format war ends, but then again I hate to get burned on stuff like that. Oh I can't wait to get into hi-def DVD's, but there's no way I'm going to screw myself.

Time to sell my XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on Player. Blu-ray has won! :lol

Japanese porn industry chooses Blu-ray
By Jose Vilches, TechSpot.com

In the war over next-gen video disc formats, both Blu-ray and HD DVD frequently announce “major victories” over their rival, causing both retailers and consumers to be hesitant to get behind one format for fear that the other will make their choice obsolete. This time, it appears that Japanese adult film makers have turned decisively to Blu-ray Disc, giving the Sony-backed format a boost in its bid to replace DVDs as the disc of choice for home movies.

According to reports, Sony has begun offering technical assistance to adult film studios in Japan, something that's been lacking in the US, where HD DVD has already won over adult film industry through its lower costs and ease-of-use. In the past, Sony and its major partner Disney had rejected the US adult film industry's proposal for adult content on their media because they felt there was an image to uphold.

When porn appeared on VHS back in the 1980s, it turned out to be the nail in Beta’s coffin – Sony’s competing videocassette format. But, even though the move represents an important step for Blu-ray disc, thinking that whatever disc format the porn industry backs will be the winner might be a little farfetched. Back in the 1980s there was no Internet porn industry, these days downloading porn from the privacy of users’ homes is disturbingly easy.

Stay away from the LG player.

Not worth the money. It's an ok player but you would be much better off buyng a PS3 and HDA2 IMO.

Cheaper too and lots of free movies right now.

I have Blue-ray only becuase I got a PS3.
I might buy a HD player down the road, though.

I still prefer regular DVD, I have some blu-ray movies but I still feel High Def DVD's are a little overated.

So you have BD but you feel HD DVDs are overrated?

My guess is you have a small display?

HD really shines on large displays. HUGE difference between HD and DVDs IMO.
