Darth Malgus - Sideshow Exclusive 1/6th Action Figure Review

Let’s talk some Sith. Darth Vader is the man, we all know this. Darth Maul takes the runner up spot with his cool tattoos, double bladed lightsaber and wicked horns. After those two there’s a pretty steep drop in terms of visual appeal. Sure, the Emperor is one evil SOB, but he’s little more than an old shriveled dude with a hood and a cane. Dooku? Evil? Check. Visually interesting? No, not really.

When Sideshow announced the 1/6th scale Darth Malgus action figure it gave fans an opportunity to add one truly bad *** looking, and much desired, Sith Lord to their collection. Having had this figure in my possession for a few days now I’m very excited to tell everyone how he turned out, so let’s get to it!

Initial Reaction:

For those of us who have been on the Sideshow Star Wars 1/6th bandwagon for quite some time the packaging becomes little more than a foregone conclusion. Little has changed in the last five or six years…. Till now. Darth Malgus features a box with gorgeous wrap around artwork. Though this isn’t quite the huge leap into Hot Toys packaging territory that Sideshow took with their box for the Deluxe Darth Vader release it is a far cry from the simple grey/black packaging we’ve become far to accustomed to. A very nice touch right off the bat.

Once in hand it becomes pretty obvious that this release just oozes quality. Materials, paint and sculpting all seem as good as I’ve ever seen from Sideshow. Everyone complains about rising prices in our hobby, and I’m no different, but it is very obvious that the extra money we’re shelling out is equating to a better overall product, and Malgus is a prime example of that.

What I dig:

So, what is it about this figure that makes it worth picking up? The answer is simple. Malgus has big time presence! Though the exclusive non-BD head is a great addition to the set I find he looks the most evil and sinister with the scarred face and breathing mask, that’s where the look of the character crosses into Darth Vader/Darth Maul territory visually.

There are some figures that you buy, futz and put on the shelf, only to never touch again. Sideshow’s Darth Malgus is just about impossible to put down. Yes, it’s that kind of figure.

What I don’t dig:

Sideshow made the body armor down to the crotch all one piece. This takes away all movement at the waist. Some collectors have already started performing simple modifications to work around this design. I’ve yet to feel the need to do this myself as I just don’t see it as being necessary.

So, on to the one real issue I have, the hood… The combination of material and wire frame makes the hood very difficult to position right. When on Malgus’ head the hood tends to stick up a bit, making it look quite unnatural. A simple work around is to tuck the ends of the hood into Malgus’ shoulder armor.

Final Verdict:

One of Sideshow’s finest 1/6th releases and a great addition to any 1/6th collection, Darth Malgus is a must have for fans of the dark side of the force. Often times it's releases like this that are overlooked. Sideshow's Deluxe Darth Vader has taken most of the spot light in 2014, leaving Malgus as an afterthought to most collectors. While this video game villain might not have the popularity of Vader, Malgus is every bit as good a release.

Malgus makes for a pretty impressive display piece. Here is is along side a fellow baddie.

Malgus has a good inch of height over an average character.

Malgus, ANH Vader swapped to a KP body and the brand new Deluxe Vader, from L to R.

Awesome review, Flosi. I was thinking about using a coupon to pick this guy up at some point too.

Exactly.

Great review mate. I have had Malgus for a couple of months now and I still love him. I'm just waiting on my Vader to arrive and then I can display my SITH together, (Emperor, Vader, Sidious/Palpatine, Maul and Malgus). :yess:

Just picked up Vader yesturday, he's sooooooooooooooo Cool in hand, now after seeing this, I want this, ugh :gah:

You know, this review was kinda hard to put together. The figure itself is really, really good. Outside of the hood it's just about perfect. It looks just like Malgus does in the game, so there's nothing missed as far as the look is concerned.

Anyway, I just found it funny how difficult it can be to review a really perfect release like this. If you guys are on the fence I can tell you that you will be happy once it's in hand.

This figure is awesome. Absolutely one of their best if not thee best. It's a testimate to SSCs improved prowess in engineering (the f-cking breather locks in in the back of the neck armor! How f-cking cool is that?!?!) and detailing in the cut & sew department. Not quite HTs quality but it's DAYUM close! Just the attention to detail like the hinged forearm armor flaps and the ball jointed shoulder armor stems are items you'd expect from HTs but here it is on a fantastic SSCs release.

My only gripes are the knees still seem a tad bit too soft and the uni-body armor. The knees are just a little rubbery feeling and of course the uni armor prevents any mid section movement. I would've liked to see this handles differently but it probably would give the whole figure a less than stable feeling with those armor pieces moving about.

Overall, a great figure by SSCs. I hope we see more of this in the future...perhaps another go at Darth Maul with their new eye and painting techniques.

Great review Flosi! I'm sure your gonna push a lot of guys right onto SSCs order page with those pics!

Great stuff, Lee! And yes, I forgot all about the use of soft plastics on the forearm armor. I love the way the thigh pads stick to the jumpsuit with velcro too! Just subtle touches that make the whole figure great!

Nice review, Flosi. :) Keep it up, man. I enjoy them.

As a big time SWTOR player and FAN...I had to get this one...and it has set off a fleury of purchases for me...my wife is starting to give me the ol' stink eye...but this guy totally makes it all worth while. A MUST if you're a TORhead!!

Want it! Maybe this summer I can. Got the new Vader very happy with it. I think Darth Talon would be a cool figure. I want to see a Exar Kun and a Ulic Quel Droma too.

Got this today, don't regret it!

One of the more unique looking EU characters, and one of the major visual draws of Biowares "The Old Republic" bought to life amazingly in this scale.

Few minor mods (a new base for sure) and he'll be taking up a large spot on my display shelf!

Doc

Flosi, your review is dead on. This is one incredible figure.
The hood is its only glaring annoyance but with enough futzing and a tuck here and there and it is workable.
SS is really starting to step it up, at least in the Star Wars department. Both Malgus and the new Vader are incredible pieces. Hope this trend continues.

I hope to raise some cash to get this fella. Honestly, I like it more than the ROTJ Vader I picked up recently. Nice review, Flosi. You just made me more desperate to get this figure now!
