Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

But to be fair, a lot of people didn't even know nor care about Blade Runner. It was all just this weird hard to grasp idea if you hadn't seen the original.

The BR sequel got made simply because it's a known intellectual property/brand (if somewhat obscure,) and that's what people vote for time and again at the box office. And even major people like Ridley Scott (who was supposed to direct it) are susceptible to the reality that for the most part, people simply want three more Alien movies from him, not anything new (and therefore risky to market.)

I'm a big BR fan (and liked the sequel,) but I saw no need whatsoever to make a sequel - I don't think anyone was clamoring for a BR sequel. That is part of the reason it didn't do well; the other part is that BR is slow and cerebral, just as BR 2049 appropriately was - and slow and cerebral is never going to translate as must-see for a wider audience on a Friday night.

BR 2049 should have been made for under $50m with a young/new auteur, not be a bloated $170m+ production that created unrealsitic expectations.

When you make a Star Wars movie you are a caretaker of the franchise, and it is your duty to do it justice. I get the sense that Rian Johnson isn't a big fan of Star Wars. And to be in charge of something this big to culture without being a fan of what it is and what it stands for is like elected being Pope without being Catholic. Just so sad.

While I like Brick and Looper, those movies were possibly an indication that he wasn't a great match for a SW film. Looper is very gritty sci-fi, and technically SW isn't really sci-fi at all, but more a mythic fantasy.

But then I'm not much of a JJ fan - he's one of the new class of creatives that make entire careers out of brand interpretation - reinterpreting established brands for the current moment - as opposed to, for the most part, creating anything original and new. Though it's what makes him a perfect match for our times, and for the SW brand.

I still can't believe the fanboys are ignoring the fact that if Rey is really a nobody, then ALL the Bull SHEEEEET that she did in TFA is ridiculous, because everyone defending Rey said, wait until the next movie, they'll explain that she had training when she was a child....she's the chosen one, she's related to Luke or some other Jedi, but no, as of right now, she's a walking, talking, plot device for the OTHER plot device (Snoke) to go after, for unknown reasons, because he's dead.

Its just a shame that all these criteria listed above are required, but the studios will settle for "Makes $1.5 Billion at box office", quality be damned. Which it would have done regardless.

Rian has said he's been a big SW fan since he was a kid. But practically every director in Hollywood can say that. Heck, Quentin Tarantino may be making a Star Trek movie. I agree the director should be a caretaker. But these guys are often more worried about putting their own "vision" out there than anything else. That's why I like when true fanboys like Abrams and Gunn get to take on these projects. Maybe Rian is a real fan or maybe he's a casual fan 2nd and a director 1st, in which case his priority is building up his reel. I wonder if he is reading any of the comments of disappointed fans and taking them to heart, or if he is just saying it's got a high RT score so everyone else is wrong. I recall back when Bryan Singer was directing the 1st X-Men and in an interview he said he read a few comics as research. From that point on I couldn't stand him. He wasn't a fan of the comics, ridiculed the "colorful spandex", laughed about the source material and decided he knew better than 40 years of storytelling. But 15 years later after every other project he directed had failed, X-Men was all he had.

This thread needs balance.
You alone can bring light into this darkness.

What do you expect me to do turn on a lightsaber and destroy the entire First Order myself? ;)

I don't think I could bring balance to this thread if I tried. Just wait till karamazov gets here. I heard he caught the Thursday night preview and is STILL at the theater's customer service desk writing out his complaints, lol.

Speaking of hologram when R2 whipped out Leia from 77 I had a lump in my throat.

DUUDE don't even get me started. I did NOT see that coming. :monkey2

Snoke was going after Rey because she knew where Luke was. Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are saying. :dunno

Snoke was going after Rey because only a Skywalker can kill a Skywalker and Kylo's became unreliable. Luke ends up killing himself so Snoke was spot on.

Rey and Ren are brother and sister.

Don't you try and bait me after I said I wasn't going to defend or debate about this movie. :nono ;)

Yes I loved it ALL and I stand by it. Okay maybe the broom kid was iffy but that's all you're getting from me, lol.

There were only two things that bugged me:

1) broom kid (though he bugged me less on repeat viewings)
2) the way Luke said “sacred texts” when he was talking to Yoda.

That’s it. :bliss’s

Even the milking scene???????????

Come on bro...not the milking scene......NOT THE MILKING SCENE!!!

Crap, had high hopes, just got back

Had some cool moments , but wasn't that good :(

I wanted it leave us waiting anxiously for IX, instead I'm indifferent.

Khev did you think Luke had his RO Vader moment?

Daddy at least made the effort to go and confront the rebels and kill them....sure he failed to get the key thing, but he was at least there.

Lazy Luke sat his fat ass on a rock, acted all brave and badass and died from high cholesterol as a result of 15 years of drinking high fat slug milk.

Being able to survive in space vacuum was an ability Luke actually uses in one of the Thrawn books.

For so much crying about how Disney erased the EU, no one seem to have caught that nod in TLJ to EU during the Leia scene.
