Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Getting back to using models and practical effects is indeed more promising news.

Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy Talks Star Wars: Episode VII | Superhero Hype

"The story and characters are all we're talking about right now," said Kennedy. "We have an amazing team at ILM, who can create fantastic effects, but if we don't have a great story and characters, the effects mean nothing. I do think making huge popular culture – and I've had the good fortune to be a part of a lot it – is really hard to do and get right. And if you don't spend the time you need on developing characters, and finding stories, complicated stories, the audience gets tired because they think they're seeing the same thing again and again."

She added that "Episode VII" will combine real locations and special effects. "It's a conversation we're having all the time in the development of 'Episode VII.' Looking at all the Star Wars movies and getting a feel for what even some of the early films did, combining real locations and special effects – that's something we're looking very seriously at. So we're going to find some very cool locations that we're going to use in support of 'Episode VII.' And I think we're probably going to end up using every single tool in the toolbox to create the look of these movies."

Davis asked Kennedy what was in that toolbox, to which she responded: "It's using model makers; it's using real droids; it's taking advantage of artwork that you actually can touch and feel. And we want to do that in combination with CG effects. We figure that's what will make it real."

Pulling all the right strings so far!

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

great news, real locations and models like the falcon. I dont want to see the crappy CGI fest of the PT. maybe puppets like the Empire Yoda too, make it real like the OT looked like. :)

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I'm still hearing Scotland for at least one location shoot. Gonna have my ear to the grindstone of this, because we're gonna cover the shooting locations in as close to as real-time as possible.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

The Phantom Menace for an example actually used many models, props and real stage environments. I think it had the perfect mix of CGI and models. The second two were a bit overdone but it wasn't bad in my opinion. It's just that some of the CGI looks outdated and could use an update. But it's not like we're talking ESB Yoda puppet stuff here. :lol

Sounds like a perfect opportunity for some of us to don these and crash a shoot!

Sorry gibby, couldn't resist!

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

They did all that in the PT

Indeed the did. In fact, they built tons of models and miniatures for the PT (particularly TPM & AOTC). The problem is they were done for the sole purpose of being digitally rendered, so the end result was still a CG-fest.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

BTW, the reason no real EP7 news came out Celebration Europe this weekend, is because it's coming out at D23 in a couple weeks.

That was done some times but the vast majority of miniatures were filmed directly. They only scanned them in when they needed to do shots that weren't physically possible with a miniature.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

True, but the environments were so digitized that the practical work was barely recognizable as being organic at all. I hope they avoid that.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I find it hilarious the way they're essentially admitting how crappy Lucas's approach on the Prequels was....without actually saying it directly.

:lol:lol:lol

Hey...wait!
