I just cancelled my exclusive pre-order as well. I was always on the fence about it since I'd love a definitive Spidey statue and the pose for this one is definitely perfect. However the sculpt simply doesn't look enough like any version of Spidey I grew up with. The head resembles the hideous Toy Biz Manga Spidey action figure with its massive eyes and spherical cranium. And he just looks too emaciated, extremely skinny with more ribs showing than I thought people had. It looks like he's on the Lara Flynn Boyle diet. The musculature of the arms and legs also looks painful in spots. The fingers also look too long and spindly, but that's a minor point I guess. The whole thing just looks a little too inhuman to me. It doesn't look as godawful as the disgusting art below, but it's a little too close to it.

I realize this begs the question of what artwork should the definitive Spider-Man statue be based on. Certainly a really good McFarlane interpretation would be interesting to see. The Toy Biz McFarlane-based figure worked really well. Granted this statue is definitely a post-McFarlane design, incorporating his large eyes and spidery fingers, but McFarlane's interpretation had bulkier, rounder musculature and a more elongated, less squat head. It also had a lot more webline detail (5 lines between the eyes, not just 3) which is probably the feature that sells the McFarlane design more than anything else, not to mention the underarm webs. Here's a good basic shot of McFarlane Spidey:

The McFarlane Spidey perhaps loses some of the humanity of the classic character, but it gives more than enough visual razzle dazzle to make up for that. This statue seems to be offering a Silver Age level of detail to the costume coupled with the cartoonish stylistic excesses of modern comic art...more or less the worst of both worlds.
