I loved HFR in 3D. I must be one of the few who did. :lol

You're not alone...I loved seeing this in IMAX HFR 3D. The only problem I had was during the spider scene. Things were moving so fast that parts of it looked blurred to me for some reason.

But Smaug looked absolutely incredible!

i thought the spider scene was brilliant and creepy and dark, smaug looked amazing.

I could not have enjoyed this film more.. the other 8 movie goers we went with absolutely loved it as well! This was my second time!

I only watch movies in good ol' fashioned 2D but it looked amazing regardless. Apart from those small slivers of footage of 1st person perspective in the barrels scene that looked like they were filmed on a mobile phone, I found that a little jarring and a very strange choice by PJ.

Nolan is boss, I love the way he shoots his films, and I think more directors should follow suit.

:exactly: :lecture

There are a lot of shots that would have looked amazing.

:exactly:

The extreme clarity of the imax 70mm format will always be a better experience than any hfr 3D gimmick nonsense.

:exactly::lecture:exactly:

Wasn't there talk of converting LotR to 3D some time back?

:horror

What an ironic statement considering that HFR has more clarity than IMAX.

but in a bad way

Yeah but it turns everything into a cheapo daytime soap :lol

Old Nolan got it right with TDK scenes shot in imax.

he is right Khev

I'm not saying it's more artistic but the problem with HFR certainly isn't its lack of clarity. :D

What fascinated me about DOS in HFR was that 60-70% of the movie looked like you were just on set watching real people recite lines in some glorified LARP pageant and then you just get blindsided when some equally present fantasy creature wanders on set as if it's just as real as the actors. I was constantly, "heh look at Martin Freeman walking around OH **** THAT'S A REAL ****ING DRAGON!" :panic: :lol The one scene where Smaug comes up to the camera and fills the screen with his teeth was unsettling to say the least.

Weird, but I couldn't help but think it was insanely cool nevertheless. Azog jumping out of invisibility and knocking Gandalf to the ground was *off the charts* wicked in HFR 3D.

Fair enough, I get what you're saying.

But Irvy is still on the right path.

It was worth seeing it once just so I could make up my own mind.

Saw it yesterday. Was better than the first but not by much.

A few things that stood out to me:

Smaug was awesome. His design, his voice, his movements, his fire-breathing, all brilliant. Loved the way he slithered through the gold, climbed and glided around the structures in Erebor, etc.

The best thing about the film though was Legolas. What a ****ing badass. /swoon

I was expecting to be disappointed with him after all the crybabies complained about "cartoon-like action sequences", but to my surprise, none of it was cartoonish. He acted just like I imagine an elf would in a battle. Very strong yet graceful, incredibly quick-thinking, adaptive, light as a feather, etc. Seeing him hold his own in melee combat against Bolg, and even start to win the fight was beyond epic. I actually liked Legolas more in this movie than in all of LotR.

Legolas FTW!

Just saw this last in HFR 3D (against my better judgement).
So just to get it out of the way, I hate HFR! It makes everything look cheap! I just couldn't get into the movie, all the time I was thinking "why does this look so bad?". All the camera movements, all the set ups for the scenes just looked terrible. The cinematic effect is completely lost. People complain about the SW PT looking like a vudeo game should be having a feast with Azog and his orcs...

Anyway, on to the movie.

I think more and more PJ's limitations as a director are shining through. All the little things that bother me about his LOTR films are glaring here, just as they were in King Kong and An Unexpected Journey. His penchant for melodrama, the filler material, it's all there, without the benefit of a majestic story.

I enjoy his movies a lot, and I think this one's better than Journey, but without the benefit of a grand story like LOTR, he's clearly a limited director.

Agree & almost agree, Tauriel was just as good.:clap

I've never understood the criticism of King Kong. I love it.

Some people have to realize that Legolas is an Elf not human.

I didn't like Legolas in this at all. He felt out of place and shouldn't belong. Other than Gandalf, the Fellowship pretty much consists of a new generation of fresh faces from different races. Throwing Legolas into the Hobbit just didn't feel right in my opinion. Not to mention he looked older and fatter than he did in LOTR. The little winks to the audience also felt forced as well like, "that's my boi Gimli" and Legolas' expression.

The one character that really surprised me was Tauriel. Last year I thought including a "made up" Elf character was lame, but she actually turned out really well. I liked her way more than Legolas and I can see the potential of this "Dwarf/Elf" relationship with Kili. I can see it having an almost Shakespearean tragedy feel to it in the next one, adding to the tone that the battle is going to inevitably have.

What did you think of Lake-Town?
Yup, really liked Lake Town as well. I loved the realistic, grittiness of it. It'll be interesting to see some aerial views of the town in the third film from Smaug.

Bard was a great character.

I didn't take the film too seriously due to my disappointment of AUJ, so I didn't care much about Legolas "not belonging" in The Hobbit. Regardless, he was incredibly badass and kept my eyes glued to the screen.

Of course he's going to look older, but I was actually surprised at how young he still looks. I don't think he was "fatter" at all, but it looks like Orlando's jaw has become more defined over the years.

I am dying for some Legolas and Smaug collectibles now. :drool

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug fell 44 percent to $16.3 million. To date, the second Lord of the Rings prequel has earned $229.6 million, and remains on pace for a total between $260 and $270 million.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug led the foreign box office for the fourth-straight weekend with $58 million. It has now earned $527 million overseas; add in its domestic total, and its worldwide figure reached $756.6 million.

The big question now is whether or not The Hobbit can reach $1 billion worldwide. In late February, the movie expands in to China and Japan—the first Hobbit movie earned around $70 million from those two markets.

Considering China's rapid expansion, it's reasonable to expect at least a slight increase. If Desolation of Smaug can get to $900 million worldwide by the end of January, $1 billion should be achievable.

That's the same ****** from Bo Mojo that told me it wouldn't make more than 230 million domestic and 1 wasn't happening. I told him I'd remind him when it crosses 1 billion and he said he would admit he was wrong. He told me he takes great pride in being right. So needless to say if it does I'll be reminding him of his pride. :lol

All our theaters around here are closed and probably will be the next 3 days. It's a mess right now and will only get worse.
