Goldeneye is coming to HD consoles and we’re one of the first websites on the internet to see it in action. But what’s it all about and is it the game you have been waiting for?

Check out our preview below for the answers.

First person shooters are aplenty on this generation of consoles. From Call of Duty to Medal of Honor, FPS games have been around for a long time. Many consider the original Goldeneye 007 to be one of the best. Last year Activision brought back the Goldeneye name to current gen console and released Goldeneye 007 on the Wii and DS. Despite the game being a success it was not the classic Goldeneye that people remember, with current Bond Daniel Craig taking over from Pierce Brosnan. Despite this it was a Goldeneye game for the current age and it worked. Activision is now bringing last year’s Wii game to the 360 and PS3 in the form of Goldeneye 007 Reloaded.

This title reworks what last year’s Wii game did with HD graphics and adds content in the form of a new game mode, leaderboards, custom maps and an engaging multiplayer. The game also makes use of the current hardware, giving a more cinematic feel to the game. Goldeneye remains a linear experience with the title having different levels for the player to work through and the game retaining the polished storyline and dialogue.

Playing Goldeneye for the first time, it seems that the developers have chosen to keep all player interactions with allies in first person, so you only ever see Daniel Craig briefly before the camera pans into his point of view. This works very well for the feel of the game and keeps you engaged whether it be talking to 006 or M. This works especially well for the cinematic action scenes. In the level we were shown, a fighter jet lashed past creating a distinctive mood with a fistful of sound and vibration before the eye pleasing explosions started, another perk of being on better hardware.

Gameplay is what you would expect from Goldeneye. You can go stealthy around and interact with enemies by clicking the right stick to engage a silent takedown, or take the traditional FPS route and shoot on sight. The game makes use of traditional FPS mechanics with no health packs going in favour of regenerating health. Bond has his usual arsenal of weapons and aids, including the handgun with silencer as well as a more conventional assault rifle and mobile hacking device; you can also pick up scattered weapons from dead enemies.

New to this game is MI6 Ops. This is a mode with three challenge modes of varying kinds. The modes have different mission types – elimination, assault and stealth. We were shown a mode called wave defence, where the map has three data centre hubs where the player has to go and download information and defend the position until it’s finished. Added to this mode is the challenge designer where the player can tailor missions with a wealth of options, i.e, tweaking the difficulty etc. Integrated into this is a leaderboard where you can view scores of other players around the world or friends, and compete to better their score.

Multiplayer in Goldeneye is making full use of the 360 and PS3′s capabilities, offering a 16 player online component with the usual game modes such as deathmatch and team deathmatch as well as some other modes which weren’t revealed. Add split screen to he fold and you’ve got a really complete package.

Goldeneye 007 Reloaded still some development time to go but early signs indicate that it will be a hit when the game launches. It may not be the classic Goldeneye everyone wants but Activision has brought a fantastic contemporary game into gaming landscape, so put this on your radar.

I wasn't a big fan of the Wii version. Doubt I'll double dip into this. The Wii one didn't give my any of the old feeling the N64 game gave me.

Why not the original actor? :dunno
