If you follow any gaming channels on YouTube, you've no doubt heard about this already. Google has decided to start a new initiative to go after copyrighted material on youtube. The whole thing is bizarre and creepy to me. It's not just gameplay videos, but reviews as well. Apparently, the publishers aren't even behind it and have mostly come out in support of the gaming channels. From what I can understand, the video isn't removed, but rather demonetized from the creator and any revenue from the ads on the video are given to the copyright striker. In many cases, it's a piece of music that's used in the background or something along those lines. Here's an Angry Joe rant about the situation.

IMO, he's one of the best gaming channels on youtube. He puts a ton of work into his reviews and has a real passion for what he does.

What's everyone's thoughts on this? It's understood that the original content belongs to the publisher, but they've been willing to look the other way because they understood that the benefits have always outweighed the cons.

Oh noes! all the you tube "celebrities" are gonna have to get real jobs! No more money for sitting at home playing video games?? This dude hasn't had a vacation in 4 years!! The humanity!! Just kidding :) I enjoy his show and especially comicbookgirl19, I hope this new robotic content ID crap doesn't affect her show!

Ah, the classic "get a real job" line. The funny thing to me is that the people saying this are often the same people who watch the videos.

Whats the point of this? ruin people's lives? :dunno .. WTF

Thats just a bad concept created during the post modern era, basically its pure bull**** every person is different, and everyone should find the job they like the most

I hit send too quickly (read my post again) I enjoy his show and I'm sure he puts a lot of effort and creativity into it.

I don't know TBH. Best I can understand, it was pressure from outside sources that made Google do this. Who those outside sources are, I'm not sure. Almost every gaming publisher has said publicly, that they're not responsible. Nintendo seems to be supporting this, but that's not surprising. They've always been a little inflexible when it comes to this type of thing.

Funny thing is that a lot of devs are backing the Youtubers. I'm sure Google will sort this out eventually. I wouldn't panic yet.

Gotcha..I see so many comments like this, I jumped on yours out of reflex. The way I see it, they're creating a form of entertainment that's no different than most other types of entertainment and many of them work a hell of a lot harder than people realize.

That's very possible. I'm sure they expected a backlash, but it's been such a huge negative reaction that it's going to be hard to ignore. Classic Game Room has apparently left youtube, opting to avoid all the hassles of the new policies and uploading videos to their website instead. That's a damned shame IMO. It's a fantastic channel and Mark is as cool as they come. Mark will lose a ton of money without youtube if he sticks with this route, but at the same time, if Google sticks to their guns, I imagine a lot of channels will do the same thing or give up on their work all together.

Because collectively the Devs have nothing on Google? If the law exists Google can do it no matter what the devs want.

It doesn't matter to me as I very rarely watch any of these stupid YouTube videos.

In reality, on a day, I record 2-3 hours of gameplay which is about 4 to 6 videos. Each video takes roughly 9 hours to edit, process and upload. Those are quite long days, considering it's 7 days a week. It's easy to nag towards Youtubers, while in reality, editors for movies and television do the exact same thing. They sit there all day clicking buttons. People have no idea how hard it can be to make proper quality videos on a daily basis. Add to that all the legal crap from things like copyright, it's a tough business and it's very hard to make more than minimum. There have been weeks where I've only managed to earn a good €50. I've had a lot of trouble finding a "real" job because of health issues. Youtube allowed me to work in a calm area with people I really like to work with and do what I've always liked to do. If they take that away from the Youtubers, it's gonna ruin gaming on a big scale. People tend to buy games based on what they see and they know most of the "official" footage is just pre-rendered stuff that you'll never see in the game.

Absolutely, if they make entertaining videos reviewing comic books, movies and video games then they should be compensated.

Well, in the end, the devs decide what goes into the copyright database, so yes. Devs do have something against Google. Google doesn't own these games, lad.

Problem is if they don't copyright it they open them self to a lot of other issues. Someone one could legally copy the game and sell it ect...

So in reality devs have no choice in the matter.

The question of whether or not they CAN do this hasn't been raised. It's about SHOULD they. Yes, legally, they can, but the reason behind why they are is another matter. It's an outside pressure from somewhere. Youtube doesn't actually benefit from this move at all. If anything, it will end up costing them millions at the end of the day. Without channels like Joe's generating millions of views, they'll lose out.

I get that you don't care and many others won't as well, but I watch these guys every day. I watch youtube more than I do anything else actually. I'd hate to see channel's like Joe get pushed out because of a thing like this.

There is actually a difference between copyright and fair use. Fair use includes things like commentary and parodies which is what I'm protected by. Most claims put against me or people with the same network are usually safe because we go with the fair use law. They're mainly targetting people directly under Google's programs even though they're within the boundaries of fair use.

Something tells me this is not only about gaming ,but because games are copywriten material they are included.
