Game of Thrones is insanely popular and for a good reason. Based on George R.R. Martin’s novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, the adaptation made for television is one of the best epic fantasy shows out there. There’s a lot of action, romance, adventure and some of the most awesomely awesome characters that you’ll either love or hate. One of the best things about watching the tv series is that there’s a lot shocking moments within. I have compiled here a list of 10 Shocking Moments on Game of Thrones that are worth mentioning. *Spoilers from Season 1-5; all images courtesy of HBO
10. Daenerys Targaryen and Her Dragons
Daenerys and Her Dragons
This one isn’t as shocking as the ones below but we get to witness the lovely Daenerys being tough as ever as she straps the witch who bewitched Khal Drogo to his funeral pyre then decided to go into it as well. She finally emerges unharmed and three baby dragons are born. Talk about Girl Power!

Joffrey is one of the most hated characters in the show for he is surely a bastard of the nastiest kind. A lot of viewers wanted him dead and with gruesome death scene as well. However, we don’t get to see him die with a sword through his heart by Arya or Sansa but instead by the method of poisoning, which is still bit of a shocker even if it’s not the kind of brutal death fans are probably hoping for the horrible King Joffrey (I still hate him for ordering our beloved Ned Stark for execution).

It was quite surprising when Theon Greyjoy who was a ward of the Starks decided to betray them by taking over Winterfell. In a desperate attempt to impress his daddy, he decided to kill two young boys to pass off as Rickon and Bran Stark. There was also the gruesome beheading of Ser Rodrik Cassel. Later on when he was kidnapped by Ramsay Snow, he gets his ***** chopped off as punishment, which means that even the men of Westeros’ genitalia is not safe from being killed off. Ouch.

Jaime started off as a bit of a baddie (he did push Bran Stark out of the window after all, which is also another shocker) but as the series went along you can tell he is actually a good guy at heart as he talked Locke out of allowing his men to rape his friend, Brienne of Tarth. However, in a surprising turn of events, Locke ends up chopping Jaime’s hand off and forced him to wearing it around his neck. Gross.
6. Tyrion’s Revenge

Tywin Lannister hates his son Tyrion, which is plain obvious in the show. but you probably wouldn’t have expected Tyrion to grab a crossbow and shoot his own father in the heart. This one may be slightly out of character for Tyrion but it’s understandable why he did it because he found his former lover, Shae in his father’s bed and that was a betrayal like no other. Killing Tywin while he was in the toilet made Tyrion so badass and he completely denied his father of any dignity in doing so. Oh well.
5. Sansa’s Wedding Night

It was rather unpleasant to watch Sansa marrying Ramsay because we all know how horrible he treats people. It isn’t that surprising that Ramsay would eventually treat Sansa badly but it is rather surprising that he decided to do so early in their wedding night as he not only raped her but also made Theon watch. Poor Theon and Sansa.
4. Sacrifice of Shireen

Stannis Baratheon in his quest to take over the Iron Throne, took the worst leap of faith and decided to off his only heir, his poor greyscaled face daughter, Shireen in a sacrifice to the Lord of Light. His sacrifice went unsuccessfully, as he eventually lost many men and even lost the battle as the last image we saw of him is of Brienne of Tarth slicing him off. Stannis is a tough character who has murdered countless of people in war but seeing him take Shireen’s life is just plain nasty, making it one of the most unpleasant things to watch in the series. Yep.

For those who have never read the book, it was shocking to see Ned Stark beheaded and it was really heartbreaking to see both Sansa and Arya witnessing the act. Sean Bean has played a lot of characters that died so he may be used to all the death scenes but for us as viewers, witnessing this does not sit well with many and certainly foreshadows the future of the show for the good characters as not having a happy ending either. Cry.
2. The Stabbing of Jon Snow

One of the most beloved characters in the series is Jon Snow, who in the recent season became the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. In the very last scene of Season 5, Jon mirrored Julius Caesar when he gets stabbed by his fellow men and it was young Olly who took the last jab too. Poor Jon fell to the ground and the very last image of the series is of him on the snow with blood pooling around him. BUT who knows he might live, you never know, it’s Game of Thrones after all so you know nothing! (Plus, I love Jon so he can’t die.)

It seemed fishy from the beginning when Walder Frey was totally okay with Robb Stark marrying Talisa instead of one of his daughters whom Robb was originally betrothed to. George R.R. Martin in his usual fashion of killing off characters we pour all our love and support to does it again in this gruesome wedding scene where three beloved characters we know die at the hands of the bad guys. RIP Talisa, Robb and Catelyn Stark.
