So it's time for me to buy the books again, only there are so many versions and releases at this point that I don't really know what version to buy. overall I prefer hardcover but paperback is fine as well.

This one seemed pretty nice, the Alan Lee illustrations are really cool.

This one though seems to come up the most, it's paperback and there aren't really any illustrations of any kind.

In the end it doesn't really matter how it looks from the outside, but if anyone has any experience with all these editions, a suggestion would be great or tips of any kind. A good looking LoTR and Hobbit set would look great on my coffee table!

Thanks!

Time to buy the books AGAIN? Why did you get rid of them in the first place!

The illustrated edition by Alan Lee is the one i'd go for, no doubt. I have the big one-volume hardback version.

But i also have a paperback version with John Howe's GTG on the cover.

And i have a box set of the individual volumes - 6 in all, and the appendices in another - with artwork from the films.

I actually lost the books, so yeah I can't NOT have the books, so I have to buy them again. I don't mind really.

I agree with FrodoEyes and Pix, the one big volume with Alan Lee's illustration is the way to go. That's the one I have plus a smaller paper back and then all 3 individual books.

But if you're going to get a box set and don't have The Hobbit, I would get a box set that included The Hobbit as well.

Done some googling, never heard of these special editions before...BUT, holy hell these things are gorgeous!

Its a bit overkill though, I'm not looking to buy 400 dollar editions of books, but I'm thinking of buying at least the LotR one.
It doesn't come with Alan Lee illustrations though, it comes with Tolkien's instead.

I have found reviews of all the books on youtube, they appear as unlisted and can only be seen through link, no idea why someone would do that but whatever. The only review I can't....reach so to say, is his Children of Hurin review. All his review vids are unlisted so its almost impossible to find the video. here are the hobbit, the lord of the rings, and The Silmarillion anyway.

The place that's seems to offer this amazing box set the cheapest is here: https://www.tolkien.co.uk/titles/40...on-deluxe-edition-j-r-r-tolkien-9780007273560

Although it's sold out, I've send an email asking them when it's going to be back in stock, I'm still waiting for a reply.
I'm actually considering buying this set now, finding them all is pretty much impossible, because The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin are simply no where to be found standalone. The only way I can see owning all these books is to buy the set.

Fingers crossed for when they get back in stock, if at all...

EDIT: Just realized that the link I had there is only for UK people (it IS a UK collection). So here I've got a US link as well, of course it's price is bumped up here because of the whole dollar/pounds thing.

This set is not on amazon as far as I know. After some more searching I've found out that when they make them, they only make 500 of them. So these things are truly scarce.

The silmirillion and the children of hurin are gone, amazon only has the 30th deluxe edition of the silmirillion, the one in this set is not on amazon, or anywhere else.

I have several--I like this one:

This one has the illustrations:

But this one is my very favorite:

Also picked up these (Children of Hurin, Sigurd & Gudrun, Tales From the Perilous Realm):

Well, to be fair that one is what fairly rare that someone did for members of the S&F. While its amazing looking its not exactly something we can order at amazon. :lol
