Some background on the figure:

He represents 5. Kavallerie-Regiment from December 1944-1945.

The skull and crossbones on the cap and shoulder boards, while similar to that of the SS, are a legacy of the Prussian Leib-Husaren-Regimenter 1 and 2. After the First World War the Totenkopf Hussar's tradition was carried on by the members of the Reichswehr's Reiter-Regiment 5, formed in 1921; later it became the Wehrmacht's 5. Kavallerie-Regiment in June 1936. In August of 1939, the regiment was transformed into three separate Reconnaissance Battalions and the tradition was discontinued.

In May 1944 the 4th Cavalry Brigade was formed with 41st and 42nd Cavalry Regiment from Cavalry Regiment South and Cavalry Regiment North. Because of the tradition 42. Reiter-Regiment was later renamed 5. Kavallerie-Regiment.

On 6th December 1944, by direct order from Hitler, the Regiment received the name "Feldmarschall von Mackensen" in honour of Generalfeldmarschall August von Mackensen's 95th birthday. A special function was held at von Mackensen's estate in Pomerania, during which he was presented with two examples of the new cuff title together with a copy of Hitler's order instituting this new insignia.

The cuff title reads, "Feldmarschall v. Mackensen". Though it should be in block letters rather than Germanic script.

It looks like him, but not from that film.

I don't know whether there is a film inspiration for this release, if so the BBICN forum hasn't hit on it yet.
Damn you, Asta! I'm getting both horses and I might get the figure because it does remind me of Inglorious Bastards. Not that IB is a fantastic film, but there were enough good scenes that I picked up Aldo. Sadly, no Hans even though I loved some of his scenes. I'll pair him up with Aldo.

I like the horses. This model must be Mr. Z's most profitable of all time as it's been incorpotated by numerous companies for their figures.

The figure itself is interesting too, but very specific and representative of only a few months at the end of the war (in Austria and Hungary I think).

I haven't found a movie source yet, but the 5th Cavalry Regiment did get a short history and an artist's depiction in Osprey's German Army Elite Units 1939-45. Osprey's artwork has been used as inspiration by Chinese 1/6 companies before. The image is even of a leutnant, and the shoulder board skulls also appear erroneously silver:

Nice figure!
But it seems a bit odd for an officer to be toting a StG44, and without the Y-straps to hold the magazine pouches to boot...

Cool but If I'm getting a horse back figure it's going to be something from the 1800s below, I'd love to have a new Napoleonic Hussar or Dragoon it's my favourite era.
