Was there a big change when ownership changed? Not trying to stir the pot just curious. I was pretty oblivious to Dave selling it until the whole sponsor thing came up on the LOTR forums (also had no clue that there may have been bridges burned or bad feelings on the whole thing). I did notice the name change but I just figured it was because Sideshow was no longer active like they used to be way, way, way back when I joined back in the heyday of Spooktacular with the Spook chat, etc. Man do I feel old now.

As far as toxic goes, I think what it is varies from person to person. Some may find a person’s words or implied tone toxic while others may not. They may just see it as venting, an opinion or something completely justified. For me, I just start skimming over or stay away for a while when I feel things have derailed into what I feel is too toxic for me to be around. I will say in my opinion (not necessarily other’s) the negativity has gotten worse in this section of late. Hopefully as more figures come out that changes.
The forum changed to Collectorfreaks.com back in July 2018 when Sideshow cut ties with it because Dave was still allowing the discussion/selling of unlicensed 1/6 pieces and SS didn't appreciate this so they cut ties and removed the Freaks from the affiliate programme. So, Collector Freaks was born. Dave always said there was no bad feeling but I'm not so sure. Here's Dave's announcement of it:
Hi all,
I know some of you have noticed some changes around here. Most are aware of the crackdown recently by Sideshow on not only bootleg but "custom" figures of unlicensed subjects. They are withdrawing affiliate membership for any website that references any kind of sale of pieces or full figures that are not licensed.

This forum is very expensive to run and I did what I could to eliminate the conflict of interest so that we could continue as an affiliate. Even though affiliate sales most months don't come close to covering the basic costs, it makes a huge difference and allows the site to continue to run.

You've all noticed advertising recently and that was created to help defray the costs. It may get more obvious as we increase the ad space to help compensate for the loss of affiliate money. I thank those that became Premium Members - that also helps pay for the basic costs.

However I did not do enough to mitigate the unlicensed discussion and sales so Sideshow has cut ties with the forum.

I have no animosity for Sideshow, I have many friends that work there and even more that worked there in the past. I completely understand their position, even if I don't necessarily agree with it. Stifling creativity in the collector community is a bad idea even if there is pressure from the license holders to crack down. I started in this hobby as a customizer 20 years ago and now that I'm in the industry I believe that it only helps the industry to have fans engaged and attempting to always help improve and innovate.

Sideshow has always been very supportive of this forum and me personally and although I'm not happy about their decision, I have no ill will towards them for this move.

Some of you may have noticed the new logo - CollectorFreaks. You can also find the forum now by using the URL collectorfreaks.com.
Dave sold the forum in 2021 to Group Builder so we now have new Admin and the rules changed accordingly.
Shell.

Thank you. The hypocrisy on here is real on many levels.

Nobody liked Felicia's comment, so at least they don't all consider us to be whining peasants. :lol

The hypocrisy is that this place was wild for a lot of the time under Dave's ownership. It had a reputation for what's now commonly labelled as "toxic". I was aware of Sideshow Freaks and its savage reputation for years, before I decided to venture out from more civilised boards to join it.

Dave sold the forum, and left us to go and work for nanjin. As Adoptedscot just wrote, the rules changed accordingly. We also had the chance to clean up the saloon...

Back in those days, it was extremely hard to be a mod on SSF...

In the year of our Lord 2023, an expensive toy collector calling another expensive toy collector a peasant is just so… off-putting, to put it mildly.

And there are just so many better words to describe the weird and toxic communities out there without having to resort to some sort of fabricated classism. :lol

Don’t know if you guys hear it enough but I greatly appreciate the time and work the mods put in to keep this place clean and tidy. Glad a new admin and new rules let you all keep things in order.

You’re all generally quick to act and fair about it which is not found everywhere. Definitely makes it a more pleasant place for discussions than many other places.

Thank you.

Thanks Adoptedscot, Asta, Snoopy and others that responded. I guess I pretty much had my head in the sand and just pretty much stuck to a few threads (LOTR 99% of the time) and missed most of it. I had notice more posts from some “old” members and mods lately which I had not seen post probably in months or even years which was nice. Even though I don’t post much it was kind of like seeing friends you hadn’t seen in a really long time.

I'm just here to see cool Star Trek figures. I don't care about anything else. 🤷‍♂️
Speaking of “old” members. I still love the old Sideshow Aragorn you customized for me waaaaaay back when.

Along with a Legolas you customized and of course some very treasured Trek figures you worked on.

In other news…got my tracking for Chakotay will post photos when it arrives.
Just got mine too, and its already been in transit for 2 days with lots of movement. It'll probably be here by the end of next week. Looks like I'm going to complete the VOY line after all. Was going to pass on Paris and Kim, but may kick myself later if I pass on them while having the rest of the crew.

I mean regarding the Playmates stuff while I get what you’re saying it’s not a great comparison. That was just a different time all together…
Plus obviously it’s a lot different buying a figure that was probably under $10 back in the day to paying around $200 a piece for the sixth scale releases...
I am waiting almost exclusively for TWOK. In the meantime I have to drastically thin out my 1/6 collection, although I have no eBay selling experience. I have considered including My Playmate 1/6 TWOK Kirk and Spock amongst my initial offerings. But I’m not entirely confident that EXO-6 will complete it proposed 5 year mission. I’m not quite sure it’s going right and hope he doesn’t lose faith or commitment . I wish him all the best — cause I do very much want those figures, but I may just be holding on to those Playmate figures.

I kinda don't care if Nanjin can be a real jerk. Like I've said before, lots of people can be jerks. Roddenberry himself could be a real fine fellow, but I still watch Star Trek.

I'll keep buying the figures, because whether we like Nanjin or not, he accomplished something no one else did. I have a 1/6 scale Ben Sisko on my shelf, which QMX flat-out told me at SDCC would never happen. So I'm grateful. And I just kind of ignore everything else.

@Sidewinder - You're not the only one that has mentioned about having a Picard Season 3 of Seven in Red Command suit if and when Nanjin does get to it. Other members also voiced their option on the Voyager thread (including myself as well). Go to post #2166 (in the Voyager thread) in which I followed after @MyenShi started it after posting originally in this specific thread

Needs to happen!
